Claims
- 1. An electrostatographic imaging process comprising the steps of providing an electrostatographic imaging member having a recording surface, forming an electrostatic latent image on said recording surface, and contacting said electrostatic latent image with a developer mixture comprising finely-divided toner particles electrostatically clinging to the surface of carrier particles having an average particle diameter of between about 50 microns and about 1,000 microns, each of said carrier particles comprising a core surrounded by an outer coating of a copolymer selected from the group consisting of styrene-alkylmethacrylate and styrene-alkylacrylate wherein said copolymer has been modified to contain active hydrogen containing constituents and then exposed to silylation to provide carrier particles characterized as having controlled triboelectric charging properties between said toner particles and said carrier particles, whereby at least a portion of said finely-divided toner particles is attracted to and deposited on said recording surface in conformance with said electrostatic latent image.
- 2. An electrostatographic imaging process comprising the steps of providing an electrostatographic imaging member having a recording surface, forming an electrostatic latent image on said recording surface, and contacting said electrostatic latent image with a developer mixture comprising finely-divided toner particles electrostatically clinging to the surface of carrier particles having an average particle diameter of between about 50 microns and about 1,000 microns, each of said carrier particles comprising a core surrounded by an outer coating of a copolymer selected from the group consisting of styrene-alkylmethacrylate and styrene-alkylacrylate wherein said copolymer has been modified to contain hydroxyl moieties and then exposed to silylation to provide carrier particles characterized as having controlled triboelectric charging properties between said toner particles and said carrier particles, whereby at least a portion of said finely-divided toner particles is attracted to and deposited on said recording surface in conformance with said electrostatic latent image.
- 3. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said coating comprises from about 0.1 percent to about 10.0 percent by weight based on the weight of said carrier particles.
- 4. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said copolymer has been exposed to controlled stoichiometric silylation so as to provide closely controlled triboelectric properties to said carrier particles.
- 5. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said copolymer has been exposed to controlled kinetic silylation so as to provide closely controlled triboelectric properties to said carrier particles.
- 6. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said coating is the product of silylation of said hydroxyl moieties of said copolymer and said core is metallic.
- 7. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said copolymer has been exposed to silylation of said hydroxyl moieties with at least one silylating agent selected from the group consisting of dimethylamino trimethylsilane, dimethylchlorosilane, trimethylchlorosilane, and polysiloxanes with reactive terminal moieties.
- 8. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 7 wherein said silylating agent is difunctional and said copolymer is thereby crosslinked.
- 9. An electrostatographic imaging process in accordance with claim 2 wherein said toner particles are present in an amount of about 1 part per about 10 to about 200 parts by weight of said carrier particles.
