Claims
- 1. An imaging system for imaging media of differing widths while supported at an imaging position on a support surface, the imaging system including a loading device configured to move a medium to be imaged along the support surface to the imaging position, the medium to be imaged being loaded such that a leading edge of the medium extends across a width of the medium and substantially perpendicular to a direction of movement of the medium, comprising:
- a registration device configured to be contacted by the leading edge of the medium during loading of the medium to position the medium in the imaging position on the support surface; and
- a drive mechanism configured to move the registration device to a position corresponding to the width of the medium to be imaged.
- 2. An imaging system according to claim 1, wherein the medium is non-metallic.
- 3. An imaging system according to claim 1, wherein:
- the support surface is an internal surface of a cylindrical drum; and
- the drive mechanism moves the registration device substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical drum.
- 4. An imaging system according to claim 1, wherein the registration device is one of two registration devices and the other registration device is fixed.
- 5. An imaging system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a registration bar having a reference surface, aligned substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis thereof, for guiding the movement of the registration device.
- 6. An imaging system according to claim 5, wherein
- the registration device contacts the reference surface to position the medium in the imaging position.
- 7. An imaging system according to claim 5, wherein
- the leading edge of the media is parallel to the reference surface with the medium in the imaging position.
- 8. An imaging system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a guide mechanism connected to the registration device and configured to guide a movement of the registration device resulting from the leading edge of the medium contacting the registration device during loading, the movement of the registration device being in the direction of movement of the medium; and
- a registration bar configured to restrain the movement of the registration device at a point at which the registration device contacts the registration bar.
- 9. An imaging system according to claim 8, wherein the registration device and the registration bar are electrically conductive, and further comprising:
- an electrical power source; and
- a detection circuit connected to the electrical power source, the circuit having a first connection at the registration device and a second connection at the registration bar;
- wherein contact of the registration device with the registration bar closes the detection circuit.
- 10. An imaging system according to claim 8, further comprising:
- an optical emitter configured to direct a radiating beam between the registration device and the registration bar; and
- an optical detector configured to detect the radiating beam passing between the registration device and the registration bar;
- wherein with the registration device in contact with the registration bar the radiating beam is undetectable by the optical detector.
- 11. An imaging system according to claim 1, wherein the registration device is a first registration device, and further comprising:
- a second registration device;
- a first guide mechanism connected to the first registration device and configured to guide a movement of the first registration device in the direction of movement of the medium;
- a second guide mechanism connected to the second registration device and configured to guide a movement of the second registration device in the direction of movement of the medium; and
- a registration bar configured to restrain the movement of the first registration device at a first point at which the first registration device contacts the registration bar and to restrain the movement of the second registration device at a second point at which the second registration device contacts the registration bar;
- wherein, with the leading edge of the medium in contact with the first and the second registration devices during loading, the first guide mechanism guides the movement of the first registration device until the first registration device is at the first point and the second guide mechanism guides the movement of the second registration device until the second registration device is at the second point.
- 12. An imaging system according to claim 11, wherein the second guide mechanism guides the movement of the second registration device after the first registration device is at the first point.
- 13. An imaging system according to claim 11, further comprising:
- a guide mechanism connected to the registration device and configured to guide a movement of the registration device resulting from the leading edge of the medium contacting the registration device during loading, the movement of the registration device being in the direction of movement of the medium; and
- a registration bar having a surface configured to contact the registration device to restrain the movement of the registration device at a point at which the associated registration device contacts the registration bar
- wherein the drive mechanism contacts the contact surface of the registration bar to thereby provide a fixed relative positioning of the registration device and the registration bar.
- 14. A method for positioning imaging media of differing widths to be supported at an imaging position on a support surface, comprising the steps of:
- moving a registration device so as to be positioned to correspond to a width of a medium to be imaged;
- moving the medium to be imaged along the support surface to the imaging position, a leading edge of the medium extending across the width of the medium and substantially perpendicular to a direction of movement of the medium;
- contacting the registration device with the leading edge of a medium to be imaged during movement of the medium to position the medium in the imaging position on the support surface.
- 15. An imaging method according to claim 14, wherein:
- the support surface is cylindrical; and
- the registration device is moved substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical support surface.
- 16. An imaging method according to claim 14, further comprising the steps of:
- moving the medium with the leading edge of the medium contacting the registration device to move the registration device in the direction or movement of the medium; and
- restraining the movement of the registration device at a predetermined point.
- 17. An imaging method according to claim 14, wherein movement of the registration device is restrained by a registration bar, and the registration device and the registration bar are formed of electrically conductive material, and further comprising the step of:
- closing an electrical circuit to thereby conduct an electrical current by contacting the registration bar with the registration device.
- 18. An imaging method according to claim 14, wherein movement of the registration device is restrained by a registration bar, and further comprising the steps of:
- directing a radiating beam between the registration device and the registration bar;
- detecting the radiating beam passing between the registration device and the registration bar;
- blocking the passing of the radiating beam between the registration device and the registration bar by moving the registration device into contact with the registration bar.
- 19. An imaging method according to claim 14, further comprising the steps of:
- moving another registration device to a position corresponding to the width of the medium to be imaged;
- contacting the other registration device with the leading edge of the medium to be imaged during movement of the medium to position the medium in the imaging position on the support surface;
- moving the medium with the leading edge of the medium while in contact with the registration device to move the registration device in the direction of movement of the medium;
- moving the leading edge of the medium while in contact with the other registration device to move the other registration device in the direction of movement of the medium; and
- restraining the movement of the registration device at a first predetermined point with the leading edge of the medium in contact with the registration device, while continuing the movement of the other registration device until the other registration device is at a second predetermined point with the leading edge of the medium in contact with the other registration device.
- 20. An imaging system for imaging media of differing widths while supported at an imaging position on a support surface, the imaging system including a loading device configured to move a medium to be imaged to the imaging position, the medium to be imaged being loaded such that a leading edge of the medium extends across a width of the medium and substantially perpendicular to a direction of movement of the medium, comprising:
- a signal generator for generating a signal representing the width of the medium to be imaged;
- a registration device configured to be contacted by the leading edge of the medium during loading of the medium to position the medium in the imaging position on the support surface; and
- a drive mechanism configured to move the registration device responsive to the signal to a position corresponding to the width of the medium to be imaged.
- 21. An imaging system according to claim 20, further comprising:
- an input device for selecting one of a plurality of media of differing widths for imaging;
- wherein the signal generator generates the signal responsive to the selection.
