Claims
- 1. A process for alkylating a substrate selected from the group consisting of olefin, alkane, alkyl halide, aromatic compound, and hydroxy aromatic compound with an alkylating agent selected from at least one member of the group consisting of olefin, alkane, and alkyl halide which comprises contacting a mixture of substrate and alkylating agent in the presence of immobilized Lewis Acid catalyst in a manner and under conditions sufficient to alkylate the substrate with the alkylating agent subject to the proviso that the alkylating agent is selected to be different from the substrate employed; and wherein the immobilized catalyst comprises polymer having at least one Lewis Acid immobilized within the structure therein, said polymer having monomer units represented by the structural formula: ##STR19## wherein a represents about 1 to about 99 mole %
- b represents about 0 to about 50 mole %
- c represents about 1 to about 99 mole %
- a+b+c is preferably about 100%; ##STR20## C is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR21## (III) combinations thereof. D is OH, halide, OR.sup.4, NH.sub.2, NHR.sup.3, OM' or OM";
- E is the residue of the reaction of at least one Lewis Acid with the D substituent of monomer unit B;
- R.sup.1 represents proton, C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 alkyl group, or C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 cycloalkyl;
- R.sup.2 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 alkyl group, C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 cycloalkyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 aryl, or C.sub.7 -C.sub.30 alkylaryl;
- R.sup.3 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 aryl, or C.sub.7 -C.sub.30 alkylaryl;
- R.sup.4 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 cycloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 aryl, or c7-C.sub.30 alkylaryl;
- M' represents alkali metal;
- M" represents alkaline-earth metal.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein in the immobilized catalyst, substituent E is derived from Lewis Acid selected from the group consisting of boron halides, aluminum halides, alkyl aluminum halides, titanium halides, titanium halides and combinations thereof.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein in the immobilized catalyst said monomer units A, B, and C have a backbone derived from propylene, 1-butene, ethylene and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein in the immobilized catalyst the backbone of monomer units A, B, and C is derived from propylene.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein in the immobilized catalyst the backbone of monomer units A, B, and C is derived from 1-butene.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein is: ##STR22##
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein in said immoblized catalyst, R.sup.2 is C.sub.3 to C.sub.20 alkyl.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the value of "a" is at least about 50 mole %.
- 9. The process of claim 1 wherein an aromatic compound is alkylated.
- 10. The process of claim 1 wherein a hydroxyaromatic compound is alkylated.
- 11. The process of any one of claims 9 and 10 wherein the alkylating agent is an alkane.
- 12. The process of any one of claims 9 and 10 wherein the alkylating agent is an an olefin.
- 13. The process of any one of claims 9 and 10 wherein the alkylating agent is alkyl halide.
