Claims
- 1. A compound comprising the structure: wherein:
- one or X and Y is hydrogen and the other is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano or c.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl;
- Z is >NH, >C.dbd.O, >C.dbd.NH or >SO.sub.2 ;
- Q is fluorescein or a fluorescein derivative;
- R is a linking group consisting of from 0 to 20 carbon atoms and heteroatoms, including not more than 12 heteroatoms nometallic, arranged in a straight or branched chain and containing up to two ring structures, with the proviso that not more than four of said heteroatoms may be linked in sequence, nor may more than two sulfur or two nitrogen or one oxygen atom be linked in sequence;
- E is a nonbonding electron pair, an oxygen atom or methyl;
- .alpha. and .alpha.' are both hydrogen or one of them is hydrogen while the other is hydroxy, methyl or fluoro, or both are taken together to form .dbd.O (ketone);
- .alpha.'' is hydrogen or hydroxy; and
- .beta. and .beta.' are both hydrogen, or both are taken together to form a bond joining the two carbon atoms to which they are attached, with the proviso that .beta. and .beta.' do not form a bond when .alpha. is H, .alpha.' is OH, E is an electron pair and .alpha.'', X and Y are all hydrogen.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein .alpha., .alpha.'', .beta., .beta.', X and Y are hydrogen, .alpha.' is hydroxy and --R--Z--Q is ##STR4##
- 3. The compound according to claim 1 wherein .beta. and .beta.' are both hydrogen.
- 4. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is ##STR5## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 5. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) Z is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is: ##STR6## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 6. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >C.dbd.O;
- (d) R is: ##STR7## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) .alpha. and .alpha.' are both H; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 7. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is: ##STR8## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 8. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is: ##STR9## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 9. The compound according to claim 3 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >C.dbd.O;
- (d) R is: ##STR10## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH; and
- (g) .alpha.'' is H.
- 10. The compound according to claim 1 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is Cl;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is: ##STR11## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH;
- (g) .alpha.'' is H; and
- (h) .beta. and .beta.' are taken together to form a bond joining the two carbon atoms to which they are attached.
- 11. The compound according to claim 1 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is Cl;
- (c) Z is >C.dbd.O;
- (d) R is: ##STR12## (e) E is a nonbonding electron pair; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH;
- (g) .alpha.'' is H; and
- (h) .beta. and .beta.' are taken together to form a bond joining the two carbon atoms to which they are attached.
- 12. The compound according to claim 1 wherein:
- (a) X is H;
- (b) Y is H;
- (c) Z is >NH;
- (d) R is: ##STR13## (e) E is an oxygen atom; (f) One of .alpha. and .alpha.' is H and the other is OH;
- (g) .alpha.'' is H; and
- (h) .beta. and .beta.' are taken together to form a bond joining the two carbon atoms to which they are attached.
