Claims
- 1. A sensing means designed to activate an impact cushioning system for protecting an occupant of bed, gurney or examination table, from fall related injuries, comprising the combination of:
(a) a bed, housing a frame portion and a horizontal mattress portion (b) at least one pressure sensing means disposed on or about said housing portion, said sensing means being operable to generate a signal when said occupant applies pressure to a sensing edge switch (c) at least one sensing light beam means disposed on or about the housing portion, the light sensing means being operable to generate a signal when the occupant interrupts the beam of light (d) a switch means for selectively activating and deactivating sensing means (e) an electronics module means for sensing, processing and transmitting electric signals (f) a motion sensing device for detecting remote movement, said motion sensing device inactivating the entire protective system (g) a cushion impact portion stowed in relationship to the frame portion (h) a telescoping means attached to cushion, the telescoping means disposed to displace the cushion (i) inflating means for inflating said telescoping means, the telescoping means being responsive to the signal generated by the sensing means; and (j) a solenoid valve means to permit flow of gas from inflation means when said valve receives the signal to actuate to the open position
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein at least one pressure sensing means comprising one or more pressure sensing edge switches disposed on or near the frame of bed, gurney or examination table.
- 3. The device of claim 1 wherein at least one light sensing means is disposed on or near frame portion of said bed, gurney or examination table.
- 4. The device of claim 1 wherein an inflating means comprises a canister containing a supply of compressed gas, said canister being fluidly connected to a valve mechanism and said valve mechanism being fluidly connected to a telescoping means and thereby to an impact cushioning portion.
- 5. The device of claim 4 wherein a valve mechanism is normally closed, whereby compressed gas is retained within a canister and operable to an open position whereby the compressed gas is free to flow from the canister into a telescoping means and thereby to displace said an cushioning portion.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said sensing means is electrically connected to said valve mechanism and said signal is operable to actuate the valve mechanism to an open position, the signal being generated when the sensing edge switch is activated simultaneously with activation of said light sensor.
- 7. The device of claim 6 wherein said switch means comprises an on/off switch movable between an on position and an off position, the on/off switch being operable to turn on or turn off the entire system.
- 8. The device of claim 6 wherein the valve mechanism further includes an alarm electrically connected thereto, said alarm being activated when the valve mechanism actuates to an open position.
- 9. The device of claim 1 wherein the impact cushioning device comprises a cushion adapted to displace outwardly from at least one longitudinally extending edge of said bed, gurney or examination table.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein the motion sensor is mounted remotely and strategically to detect motion by one or more individuals who may be approaching the occupant of said bed, gurney or examination table.
- 11. The device of claim 1 wherein at least one electronics module receives, processes and transmits said signals as generated when an occupant of the bed, gurney or examination table attempts to leave the bed, gurney or examination table.
