Claims
- 1. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising:
- an elongated dielectric housing having an outwardly opening card-receiving slot within which the mating edge of an edge card is mountable as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot;
- a plurality of first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, and only a single spring arm extending into said slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of said card into said slot; and
- a plurality of substantially planar second terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, first and second spring arms extending into said slot, each for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces, said first spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on one side of said mating edge card and said second spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on a second, opposite side of said mating edge card.
- 2. The edge card connector of claim 1 in which said first terminals are substantially planar, and the planes of said first and second terminals are generally parallel to each other and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said slot.
- 3. The edge card connector of claim 1 in which said second terminals each have a base portion extending generally parallel to a bottom surface of said slot, and said first and second spring arms of each second terminal extend away from said base portion.
- 4. The edge card connector of claim 1 in which said second traces are traces of a common ground circuit, and said second terminals are ground terminals with the two tail portions of each ground terminal engaging traces of the common ground circuit for establishing a multiple point contact between each said second terminal and said common ground circuit.
- 5. The edge card connector of claim 4 in which said first circuit traces are traces of a plurality of individual circuits, and said first terminals are signal terminals with the tail portion of each engaging a trace of a separate one of the individual circuits.
- 6. The edge card connector of claim 1 in which said housing is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart cavities along said slot, and said terminals each being mounted in one of said cavities.
- 7. The edge card connector of claim 6 in which said second terminals each are longitudinally positioned between two of said first terminals.
- 8. The edge card connector of claim 7 in which said first and second terminals are mounted in an alternating array along said slot.
- 9. The edge card connector of claim 6 in which the mounting portion of each terminal is received in a recess spaced from the spring arm of the terminal.
- 10. The edge card connector of claim 9 wherein said mounting portion of each terminal includes barbs that are securely mounted within the housing.
- 11. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising:
- an elongated dielectric housing having an outwardly opening card-receiving slot within which the mating edge of an edge card is mountable as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot;
- a plurality of first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, and only a single spring arm extending into said slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of said card into said slot;
- a plurality of substantially planar second terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, a base portion extending generally parallel to a bottom surface of said slot, first and second spring arms of each second terminal extending away from said base portion and into said slot, each for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces, said first spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on one side of said mating edge card and said second spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on a second, opposite side of said mating edge card; and
- wherein said second terminals each are longitudinally positioned between two of said first terminals.
- 12. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising:
- an elongated dielectric housing having an outwardly opening card-receiving slot within which the mating edge of an edge card is mountable as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot, said housing including a plurality of spaced apart terminal receiving cavities;
- a plurality of substantially planar first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, and only a single spring arm extending into said slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of said card into said slot: and
- a plurality of substantially planar second terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, a base portion extending generally parallel to a bottom surface of said slot, first and second spring arms of each second terminal extending away from said base portion and into said slot, each for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card as an incident to straight line insertion movement of the edge card into said slot, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces, said first spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on one side of said mating edge card and said second spring arm being configured to engage a contact pad on a second, opposite side of said mating edge card; and
- wherein said first and second terminals are mounted in said terminal receiving cavities in an alternating array along said slot and the planes of said first and second terminals are generally parallel to each other and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said slot.
- 13. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising:
- an elongated dielectric housing having a mounting surface for mounting on said printed circuit board and a board-receiving slot for receiving the mating edge of the edge card, said board-receiving slot Including a first sidewall and a bottom surface;
- a plurality of first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, only a single spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card; and
- a plurality of second terminals each being generally planar and having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, a spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces;
- said spring arms of said first terminals each having a respective contact portion located a first distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall; and said spring arms of said second terminals each having a contact portion located a greater distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall than the contact portions of said first terminals.
- 14. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said second terminals each have a second spring arm extending into said slot past a second sidewall of said board-receiving slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, said first and second sidewall being generally parallel.
- 15. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said first terminals are generally planar, and the planes of said first and second terminals are generally parallel to each other and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said slot.
- 16. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said housing is formed with a plurality of first and second terminal receiving cavities, said first terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in a respective one of said first terminal receiving cavities, and said second terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in one of said second terminal receiving cavities.
- 17. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said second traces are traces of a common ground circuit, said second terminals being ground terminals with the two tail portions of each ground terminal engaging traces of the common ground circuit for establishing a multiple point contact between each said second terminal and said common ground circuit, said first circuit traces are traces of a plurality of individual circuits, and said first terminals being signal terminals with the tail portion of each engaging a trace of a separate one of the individual circuits.
- 18. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said second terminals each are longitudinally positioned between two of said first terminals.
- 19. The edge card connector of claim 13 in which said first and second terminals are mounted in an alternating array along said slot.
- 20. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising;
- an elongated dielectric housing having a mounting surface for mounting on said printed circuit board and a board-receiving slot for receiving the mating edge of the edge card, said board-receiving slot including a first sidewall and a bottom surface;
- a plurality of first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, a spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card;
- a plurality of second terminals each being generally planar and having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, a spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces;
- said spring arms of said first terminals each having a respective contact portion located a first distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall, and said spring arms of said second terminals each having a contact portion located a greater distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall than the contact portions of said first terminals; and
- said second terminals each are longitudinally positioned between two of said first terminals.
- 21. The edge card connector of claim 20 in which said second terminals each have a second spring arm extending into said slot past a second sidewall of said board-receiving slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, said first and second sidewall being generally parallel.
- 22. The edge card connector of claim 20 in which said first terminals are generally planar, and the planes of said first and second terminals are generally parallel to each other and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said slot.
- 23. The edge card connector of claim 20 in which said housing is formed with a plurality of first and second terminal receiving cavities, said first terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in a respective one of said first terminal receiving cavities, and said second terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in one of said second terminal receiving cavities.
- 24. The edge card connector of claim 20 in which said second traces are traces of a common ground circuit, said second terminals being ground terminals with the two tail portions of each ground terminal engaging traces of the common ground circuit for establishing a multiple point contact between each said second terminal and said common ground circuit, said first circuit traces are traces of a plurality of individual circuits, and said first terminals being signal terminals with the tail portion of each engaging a trace of a separate one of the individual circuits.
- 25. An edge card connector for mounting on a printed circuit board having a plurality of first circuit traces and a plurality of second circuit traces and for receiving a mating edge card having a plurality of contact pads adjacent an edge thereof, said connector comprising:
- an elongated dielectric housing having a mounting surface for mounting on said printed circuit board and a board-receiving slot for receiving the mating edge of the edge card, said board-receiving slot including a first sidewall and a bottom surface;
- a plurality of first terminals each having a mounting portion for mounting the terminal in said housing, a tail portion for engaging one of said first circuit traces on said circuit board, a spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card;
- a plurality of second terminals each being generally planar and having a mounting portion for mounting in said housing, a spring arm extending into said slot past said first sidewall for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, and two separated tail portions for engaging said second circuit traces;
- said spring arms of said first terminals each having a respective contact portion located a first distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall, and said spring arms of said second terminals each having a contact portion located a greater distance from said bottom surface along said first sidewall than the contact portions of said first terminals; and
- said first and second terminals are mounted in an alternating array along said slot.
- 26. The edge card connector of claim 25 in which said second terminals each have a second spring arm extending into said slot past a second sidewall of said board-receiving slot for resiliently contacting a respective one of the contact pads of the mating edge card, said first and second sidewall being generally parallel.
- 27. The edge card connector of claim 25 in which said first terminals are generally planar, and the planes of said first and second terminals are generally parallel to each other and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said slot.
- 28. The edge card connector of claim 25 in which said housing is formed with a plurality of first and second terminal receiving cavities, said first terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in a respective one of said first terminal receiving cavities, and said second terminals being mounted with at least a portion thereof in one of said second terminal receiving cavities.
- 29. The edge card connector of claim 25 in which said second traces are traces of a common ground circuit, said second terminals being ground terminals with the two tail portions of each ground terminal engaging traces of the common ground circuit for establishing a multiple point contact between each said second terminal and said common ground circuit, said first circuit traces are traces of a plurality of individual circuits, and said first terminals being signal terminals with the tail portion of each engaging a trace of a separate one of the individual circuits.
