Claims
- 1. An implantable device comprising;a surgically implantable hard tissue replacement prosthesis; and, in combination therewith, retinoid means for improving biocompatibility of the prosthesis.
- 2. The device according to claim 1 wherein said retinoid means is present in the form of a film on the prosthesis.
- 3. The device according to claim 2 wherein said retinoid means is bonded to a surface of the prostheses.
- 4. The device according to claim 1 wherein said retinoid means comprises a naturally occurring retinoid.
- 5. The device according to claim 1 wherein said retinoid means is selected from a group consisting of Vitamin A, Vitamin A aldehyde, Vitamin A acid and their synthetic and natural congeners.
- 6. A device according to claim 1 wherein the retinoid comprises p-[(E)-2-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethyl1-2-naphthyl)propenyl]-benzoic acid.
- 7. The device according to claim 1 wherein the retinoid means is incorporated into the prosthesis for release by the prosthesis in order to improve biocompatibility of the prosthesis.
- 8. The device according to claim 1 wherein said hard tissue replacement prosthesis comprises a cardiac valve component.
- 9. The device according to claim 1 wherein said hard tissue replacement prosthesis comprises a joint prosthesis.
- 10. The device according to claim 9 whereas said hard tissue replacement prosthesis further comprises rigid fixation pins for joining the prosthesis to bone.
- 11. The device according to claim 1 whereas said hard tissue replacement prosthesis comprises a stud and a pin for joining the prosthesis to bone tissue.
