Claims
- 1. An implant for reinforcing an annulus of an intervertebral disc, comprising a thin resilient barrier having a first surface for placement against an interior surface of an annulus lamella and a second opposing surface, wherein said barrier is adapted to be sealably positioned against the lamella via the exertion of force on at least a portion of the second surface sustained by a pressurized intervertebral disc environment.
- 2. An intervertebral disc implant for reinforcing a segment of an annulus, comprising:
a barrier having a first and second surface, wherein said first surface is adapted to present a concave surface facing material bounded by an annulus and said second surface opposes said first surface and contacts native annulus tissue in the implanted orientation; wherein said barrier is dimensioned to extend along the annulus across and beyond the periphery of the segment.
- 3. An intervertebral disc implant, comprising:
a rectangular biocompatible supports member having a middle section defined by a height and a length; and first and second curved ends extending obliquely from said middle section; wherein the length is within the range of from about 0.5 cm to about 3 cm and the height is within the range of from about 0.2 cm to about 1.5 cm, and wherein the first and second curved ends have a radius of curvature approximate to that defined by a natural posterior lateral annulus lamella.
- 4. The implant of claim 3, wherein the support member is concave along at least a portion of its length.
- 5. An intervertebral disc implant, comprising:
a biocompatible support member having a longitudinal axis; and a first end and a second end that extend off at oblique angles relative to the longitudinal axis; wherein the longitudinal axis is dimensioned to correspond to the length of an interior surface of a posterior annulus in a lumbar disc.
- 6. An intervertebral disc implant, comprising a rectangular biocompatible support member, having an oblique angle along its length that is defined by a radius of curvature approximately corresponding to that of the radius of curvature defined by a lamellar surface of a posterior lateral annulus.
- 7. An intervertebral disc implant as in claim 6, wherein the rectangular support member is concave in two perpendicular planes.
