Claims
- 1. An implantable medical apparatus operable in conjunction with an attachable lead, the apparatus comprising:
- a housing;
- an electronic component contained within the housing;
- a header connected to the housing, the header defining a connector cavity, wherein at least a portion of the header is transparent or translucent;
- a connector element, at least a portion of which is positioned within the connector cavity, the connector element being operably connected to the electronic component; and
- the header including a lens, such that the connector element may be viewed through the lens to facilitate confirmation of proper connection of a lead to the connector element, wherein the lens is detachable from the header, such that the lens may be detached after confirming that the lead is properly connected for implantation of said apparatus without said lens.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the connector cavity is an elongated cylindrical bore having an optically smooth inner surface portion, the bore being oriented on a first axis, and the lens being positioned laterally from the bore, such that light passing through the bore perpendicular to the first axis may pass through the lens.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cavity is oriented on a first axis, and the lens is oriented on a second axis offset at an offset angle from the first axis.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 including a second connector element, and wherein the header includes a second lens oriented on a third axis offset from the second axis, and positioned for viewing a second lead inserted in the second connector element.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the lens is rigid.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the lens has an adherent lower surface.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the lens has a releasable adhesive at its periphery.
- 8. An implantable cardiac therapy apparatus for attachment to a lead connector having a connector pin, the apparatus comprising:
- a housing;
- an electronic cardiac therapy component contained within the housing;
- a header connected to the housing, wherein at least a portion of the header is transparent or translucent;
- the header defining an elongated cavity extending from an aperture at the surface of the header to a cavity bottom;
- a recessed connector element positioned within the header such that a connector pin inserted into the cavity may contact the connector element, the connector element being operably connected to the electronic component; and
- the header having a detachable lens for implantation of said apparatus without said lens, and a viewing portion defining at least a portion of the cavity and providing an optical path extending from the detachable lens through the viewing portion to an inner cavity portion between the connector element and the cavity bottom, such that a lead connector pin properly extending beyond the connector element toward the cavity bottom may be viewed through the transparent or translucent portion to confirm proper connection.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the lens comprises a fresnel lens.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the inner cavity portion is centered on a cavity axis, and the lens is centered on an optical axis intersecting the cavity axis.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the optical axis is substantially perpendicular to the cavity axis.
