Claims
- 1. A hydrostatic transmission for use in a vehicle to convert rotational power from the vehicle engine to output means, comprising
- a) a housing providing a sump for hydraulic fluid;
- b) a first hydraulic displacement unit and a second hydraulic displacement unit;
- c) means for rotatably mounting said first and second hydraulic displacement units;
- d) hydraulic transfer means for hydraulically connecting said first and second hydraulic displacement units and for containing hydraulic fluid separate from said sump; and
- e) means for mechanically diverting said hydraulic fluid from said hydraulic transfer means to said sump to enable said vehicle to be moved with minimal resistance from said hydraulic fluid, said means for diverting said fluid comprises means for unseating at least one of said hydraulic displacement units from its running surface to allow said fluid to drain quickly from said hydraulic transfer means to said sump.
- 2. A hydrostatic transmission as set forth in claim 1, wherein said means for rotatably mounting said first and second hydraulic displacement units comprises a center section mounted in said housing and having a first running surface positioned to rotatably mount said first hydraulic displacement unit and a second running surface positioned to rotatably mount said second hydraulic displacement unit.
- 3. A hydrostatic transmission as set forth in claim 2, wherein said hydraulic transfer means comprise ports integrally formed within said center section.
- 4. A hydrostatic transmission as set forth in claim 2, wherein said means for unseating comprises a rotatable shaft having a top end and a bottom end and a plate means movably mounted in said center section adjacent said shaft, wherein upon rotation said shaft moves said plate means to engage one of said hydraulic displacement units, thereby forcing said hydraulic displacement unit to disengage from its running surface.
- 5. A hydrostatic transmission for use in a vehicle to convert rotational power from the vehicle engine to output axle means, comprising
- a) a housing for said transmission providing a fluid sump;
- b) a first hydraulic displacement unit and a second hydraulic displacement unit located within said housing;
- c) a center section mounted in said housing and having means for rotatably mounting said first hydraulic displacement unit, means for rotatably mounting said second hydraulic displacement unit, and porting means integrally formed therein for hydraulically connecting said first displacement unit to said second hydraulic displacement unit; and
- d) a check valve mechanism comprising
- i) valve openings formed into said center section and extending to said porting means;
- ii) a plate mounted on said center section and having a top surface, a bottom surface, a plurality of plate openings formed therein corresponding to said valve openings, and ridge means for creating a seal between said plate and said center section, said ridge means being formed on the top surface of said plate around each of said plate openings.
- 6. A hydrostatic transmission as set forth in claim 1, wherein said transmission is in connection with a transaxle.
- 7. A hydrostatic transmission as set forth in claim 5, wherein said transmission is in connection with a transaxle.
