Claims
- 1. A pumping apparatus for delivering a constant flow of fluid, the apparatus comprising:
- a pair of piston/cylinder combinations, each of said combinations having a piston and a cylinder, said piston being coaxially disposed within said cylinder and being adapted to move axially within said cylinder such that movement of said piston in a first axial direction draws fluid into said cylinder and movement of said piston in a second axial direction opposite said first axial direction discharges fluid from said cylinder; and
- a rotatable cam having a surface being adapted to contact an end of each of said pistons so that rotation of said cam causes said pistons to move axially within said respective cylinders, said end of each of said pistons contacting said cam surface at locations which are 180.degree. out of phase with each other;
- said cam having a center of rotation which defines a plurality of radial distances between said center and said surface, wherein said radial distances generally increase at a first constant rate from an angle of 0.degree. to a first preselected angle being less than 190.degree., wherein said radial distances generally increase at a second constant rate from said first preselected angle to a second preselected angle of about 190.degree., wherein said radial distances generally increase at said about first constant rate from said second preselected angle to a third preselected angle being greater than 190.degree., and wherein said radial distances generally decrease from said third preselected angle to an angle of 360.degree..
- 2. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said radial distances remain substantially constant from said third preselected angle for about 10 degrees.
- 3. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 2, wherein said radial distances remain substantially constant from about 350 degrees to about 360 degrees.
- 4. A pumping apparatus for delivering a constant flow of fluid, the apparatus comprising:
- a pair of piston/cylinder combinations, each of said combinations having a piston and a cylinder, said piston being coaxially disposed within said cylinder and being adapted to move axially within said cylinder such that movement of said piston in a first axial direction draws fluid into said cylinder and movement of said piston in a second axial direction opposite said first axial direction discharges fluid from said cylinder; and
- a rotatable cam having a surface being adapted to contact an end of each of said pistons so that rotation of said cam causes said pistons to move axially within said respective cylinders, said end of each of said pistons contacting said cam surface at locations which are 180.degree. out of phase with each other;
- said cam having a center of rotation which defines a plurality of radial distances between said center and said surface, wherein said radial distances generally increase from an angle of 0.degree. to a first preselected angle being greater than 180.degree., a first portion of said generally increasing radial distances increasing at a first constant rate and a second portion of said generally increasing radial distances increasing at a second constant rate, said second constant rate being about twice that of said first constant rate, and wherein said radial distances generally decrease from said first preselected angle to an angle of 360.degree..
- 5. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 4, further comprising:
- a suction ring seal disposed about each of said respective pistons.
- 6. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 5, wherein said radial distances remain substantially constant in a selected angular region.
- 7. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 6, wherein said selected angular region facilitates seating of each of said suction ring seals as said piston shifts from said second axial direction to said first axial direction.
- 8. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 4, further comprising:
- a discharge ring seal disposed about each of said respective pistons.
- 9. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 8, wherein said radial distances remain substantially constant in a selected angular region.
- 10. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 9, wherein said selected angular region facilitates seating of each of said discharge ring seals as said piston shifts from said first axial direction to said second axial direction.
- 11. A pumping apparatus for delivering a constant flow of liquid, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of piston/cylinder combinations, each of said combinations having a piston and a cylinder, said piston being coaxially disposed within said cylinder and being adapted to move axially within said cylinder such that movement of said piston in a first axial direction draws fluid into said cylinder and movement of said piston in a second axial direction opposite said first axial direction discharges fluid from said cylinder; and
- a rotatable cam having a surface that contacts an end of each of said pistons so that rotation of said cam causes said pistons to move axially within said respective cylinders, said end of each of said pistons contacting said cam surface at locations which are 180.degree. out of phase with each other; and
- said cam having a center of rotation which defines a plurality of radial distances between said center and said surface,
- wherein said radial distances between 0 degrees and about 40 degrees increase at a first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 40 degrees and about 180 degrees increase at a second preselected rate, said second preselected rate rate being about twice said first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 180 degrees and about 220 degrees increase at about said first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 220 degrees and about 230 degrees remain substantially constant,
- wherein said radial distances between about 230 degrees and about 270 degrees decrease at a third preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 270 degrees and about 340 degrees decrease at a fourth preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 340 degrees and about 350 degrees remain substantially constant, and
- wherein said radial distances between about 350 degrees and about 360 degrees increase at about said first preselected rate.
- 12. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 11, wherein each piston/cylinder combination further comprises:
- a spring, said spring coupled to said cylinder and said piston to exert a force on said piston to maintain contact between said piston end and said cam surface.
- 13. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 12, wherein the force exerted by said spring tends to displace said piston in said first axial direction.
- 14. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
- roller bearings coupled to said end of each piston such that said roller bearings contact said cam surface.
- 15. A pumping apparatus for delivering a constant flow of liquid, said apparatus comprising:
- a pair of piston/cylinder combinations, each of said combination shaving a piston and a cylinder,
- each of said cylinders having a suction check valve being adapted to communicate with its corresponding cylinder such that liquid only flows into said cylinder when said piston is displaced out of that cylinder,
- each of said cylinders having a discharge check valve being adapted to communicate with its corresponding cylinder such that liquid only flows out of said cylinder when said piston is displaced into that cylinder, and
- a rotatable cam having a surface that contacts an end of each of said pistons so that rotation of said cam causes said pistons to move axially within said respective cylinders, said end of each of said pistons contacting said cam surface at locations which are 180.degree. out of phase with each other;
- said cam having a center of rotation which defines a plurality of radial distances between said center and said surface,
- wherein said radial distances between 0 degrees and about 40 degrees increase at a first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 40 degrees and about 180 degrees increase at a second preselected rate, said second preselected rate rate being about twice said first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 180 degrees and about 220 degrees increase at about said first preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 220 degrees and about 230 degrees remain substantially constant,
- wherein said radial distances between about 230 degrees and about 270 degrees decrease at a third preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 270 degrees and about 340 degrees decrease at a fourth preselected rate,
- wherein said radial distances between about 340 degrees and about 350 degrees remain substantially constant, and
- wherein said radial distances between about 350 degrees and about 360 degrees increase at about said first preselected rate.
