Claims
- 1. A method for sealing of spout filaments to carton blanks comprising the steps of:
- supplying a series of carton blanks, each having a wall defining at least an open top end thereof, a spout hole cut through the carton wall at a selected spout position in the vicinity of the open top end, and an extrusion layer applied on at least an external side of the carton wall around the spout hole;
- intermittently advancing each one of the series of carton blanks in turn to a sealing station;
- supplying a series of fitments to an escapement position;
- intermittently releasing each fitment in turn from said escapement position whereby each fitment displaces under the influence of gravity;
- guiding each displacing fitment released from said escapement position to a position in registration with the spout hole on the external side of the wall of a carton blank advanced to said sealing station and retaining said fitment at said registration position, said guiding and retaining step being performed in part by a surface of a first member in a first position;
- moving an anvil into the open top end adjacent the spout hole position on an internal side of the wall of a carton at said sealing station;
- intermittently moving and retracting the anvil into and from the open top end of a carton blank advanced to said sealing station;
- moving a sealing head to press a fitment retained at said registration position in contact with the extrusion layer on the external side of the wall of a carton blank at said sealing station, and also indirectly against said anvil on the internal side thereof, and sealing the fitment to the carton blank in registration with the spout hole;
- intermittently moving and retracting said sealing head to and from the carton blank in timed relation with said anvil;
- moving said first member to a second position for releasing the fitment at said registration position in conjunction with movement of said sealing head to press and seal the fitment to a carton blank at said sealing station; and
- advancing each carton blank fitted with a respective fitment from said sealing station to an output.
- 2. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 1, further comprising the step of moving first and second sealing heads in opposite directions to simultaneously exert substantially equal and opposite forces on a support member by way of first and second anvils respectively.
- 3. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 1, wherein said advancing step includes providing an indexing conveyor having a plurality of pockets supported thereon for receiving and holding the carton blanks therein.
- 4. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 1, wherein said sealing head is an ultrasonic sealing horn.
- 5. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 1, wherein said sealing step includes applying an adhesive layer to the sealing surface of the fitment prior to pressing the fitment with said adhesive layer against the extrusion layer of the carton blank.
- 6. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 5, including the further step of providing either or both of said anvil and said sealing head with heating elements and thereby applying heat for bonding the fitment to the extrusion layer through said adhesive layer.
- 7. A method for sealing of fitments according to claim 1, further comprising steps of: moving a second member from a third position to a fourth position when said first member is moved from said first position to said second position, said first member in said first position and said second member in said third position cooperating to retain said fitment in said registration position and providing a timing control for causing said first and second members to release the fitment at the same time as said sealing head is moved to press the fitment in contact with the external extrusion layer on the carton blank and said anvil is inserted on the inside of the carton blank.
- 8. A fitment sealing apparatus comprising:
- carton supply means for supplying a series of carton blanks, each having a wall defining at least an open top end thereof, a spout hole cut through the carton wall at a selected spout position in the vicinity of the open top end, and an extrusion layer applied on at least an external side of the carton wall around the spout hole;
- advancing means for intermittently advancing each one of the series of carton blanks in turn to a sealing station;
- fitment supply means for supplying a series of fitments;
- escapement means for intermittently releasing each fitment in turn from said fitment supply means whereby each fitment displaces under the influence of gravity;
- fitment retaining means having first and second states, said fitment retaining means guiding each displacing fitment released from said escapement means to a position in registration with the spout hole on the external side of the wall of a carton blank advanced to said sealing station and retaining said fitment at said registration position in said first state and said fitment retaining means releasing said fitment in said second state, said fitment retaining means comprising a first member which is displaced from a first position to a second position when said fitment retaining means changes from said first state to said second state;
- anvil means movable into the open top end adjacent the spout hole position on an internal side of the wall of a carton at said sealing station;
- anvil moving means for intermittently moving and retracting said anvil means into and from the open top end of a carton blank advanced to said sealing station;
- sealing means movable for pressing a fitment retained at said registration position by said fitment retaining means in contact with the extrusion layer on the external side of the wall of a carton blank at said sealing station, and also indirectly against said anvil means on the internal side thereof, and for sealing the fitment to the carton blank in registration with the spout hole;
- sealing moving means for intermittently moving and retracting said sealing means to and from the carton blank in timed relation with said anvil moving means;
- release actuation means for actuating displacement of said first member from said first position to said second position in conjunction with movement of said sealing means to press and seal the fitment to a carton blank at said sealing station; and
- output means for advancing each carton blank fitted with a respective fitment from said sealing station to an output end of the apparatus.
- 9. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said carton supply means includes a supply of pre-seamed carton blanks and means for opening the carton blanks in a rectangular tube configuration and transferring the opened carton blanks to said advancing means.
- 10. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said advancing means is an indexing conveyor having a plurality of pockets supported thereon for receiving and holding the carton blanks therein.
- 11. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said anvil means is an anvil member having a shape corresponding to the internal shape of the carton blank.
- 12. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said sealing means is an ultrasonic sealing horn.
- 13. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said sealing means includes an applicator for applying an adhesive layer to the sealing surface of the fitment, and a sealing head for pressing the fitment with said adhesive layer against the extrusion layer of the carton blank.
- 14. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 13, wherein either or both of said anvil means and said sealing head include heating elements for applying heat for bonding the fitment to the extrusion layer by said adhesive layer.
- 15. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said fitment supply means includes a gravity-feed track for the series of fitments.
- 16. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said fitment retaining means further comprises a second member which is displaced from a third position to a fourth position when said fitment retaining means changes from said first state to said second state, said first member in said first position and said second member in said third position cooperating to retain said fitment in said registration position, and said release actuation means comprises means for moving said first and second members in timed relation with the movement of said sealing means.
- 17. A fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said release actuation means further comprises a timing control for causing said first and second members to move to said second and fourth positions respectively at the same time as said sealing means is moved to press the fitment in contact with the external extrusion layer on the carton blank and said anvil means is inserted on the inside of the carton blank.
- 18. A dual fitment sealing line comprising first and second fitment sealing apparatus according to claim 8, further comprising support means positioned between the anvil means of said first fitment sealing apparatus and the anvil means of said second fitment sealing apparatus, wherein the sealing means of said first fitment sealing apparatus and the sealing means of said second fitment sealing apparatus cause said respective anvil means to simultaneously exert substantially equal and opposite forces on said support means at the same time.
