Claims
- 1. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads of a disk drive into engagement with a recording medium, the disk drive having a magnet for moving the carriage assembly and a central guide track upon which the carriage assembly slides when the carriage assembly is mounted within the disk drive, said carriage assembly comprising:
- a carriage body, said body defining a sidewall having a first opening and a second opening with a passage extending there between, the central guide track being insertable into the first opening, the passage and the second opening when the carriage assembly is inserted into the disk drive, the carriage assembly being rotatable about the central guide track; and
- a first in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body, the first in-rigger comprising an outer surface, an inner surface and a protruding portion extending from the inner surface, the protruding portion contacting a first side of the magnet if the carriage assembly rotates about the central guide track in a first direction to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly in the first direction and thereby maintain the carriage assembly positioned within the disk drive.
- 2. The carriage assembly in claim 1 wherein the carriage body is made of a plastic material.
- 3. The carriage assembly in claim 1 further comprising:
- a first bearing secured with said sidewall proximate said first opening and a second bearing secured with said sidewall proximate said second opening.
- 4. The carriage assembly in claim 1, wherein said first in-rigger is integrally formed with said sidewall.
- 5. The carriage assembly in claim 1 further comprising a coil mounted to the outer surface of the first in-rigger.
- 6. The carriage assembly in claim 1 wherein the first in-rigger is made of a plastic material.
- 7. The carriage assembly of claim 1, further comprising a second in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body and parallel to and above the first in-rigger, the second in-rigger having a protrusion extending from an inner surface of the second in-rigger, the magnet being disposed between the first and the second in-riggers when the carriage assembly is mounted within the disk drive, so that the protrusion of the second in-rigger is disposed proximal to a second side of the magnet, the protrusion of the second in-rigger contacting the second side of the magnet when the carriage assembly rotates in a second direction about the carriage assembly to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly in the second direction.
- 8. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads into engagement with a recording medium and for mounting on a central guide track of a disk drive, the disk drive being of the type that has a magnet for moving the carriage assembly said carriage assembly, comprising:
- a carriage body that has a passage through which the central guide track extends when the carriage assembly is inserted into the disk drive;
- a first in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body;
- a second in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body below the first in-rigger, the first and the second in-riggers each having an inner surface from which a protrusion extends, each of the protrusions being disposed proximal to the magnet when the carriage assembly is mounted within the disk drive, the carriage assembly being mountable in the disk drive so that the central guide track extends through the passage, and the carriage assembly is free to rotate about the central guide track, one of the protrusions contacting the magnet when the central guide track rotates in a first direction about the central guide track to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly in the first direction and the other of the protrusions contacting the magnet when the central guide track rotates in a second direction about the central guide track to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly about the central guide track in the second direction, the first and the second in-riggers thereby preventing any significant rotation of the carriage assembly about the central guide track; and
- a coil coupled to an outer surface of the first in-rigger and an outer surface of the second in-rigger, the coil cooperating with the magnet to move the carriage assembly.
- 9. The carriage assembly in claim 8 further comprising:
- at least one carriage arm, said arm coupled to said carriage body.
- 10. The carriage assembly in claim 8 wherein said carriage body is made of a plastic material.
- 11. The carriage assembly in claim 8, wherein said carriage body further comprises:
- a first opening and a second opening that from part of the passage;
- a first bearing securely coupled proximate said first opening and a second bearing securely coupled proximate said second opening.
- 12. The carriage assembly in claim 8 wherein the first and the second in-riggers are integrally formed with said carriage body.
- 13. A disk drive of the type that can receive a removable data storage medium and that has a central guide track and a magnet, comprising:
- a carriage body that has a passage through which the central guide track extends when the carriage assembly is inserted into the disk drive;
- a first in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body;
- a second in-rigger extending laterally from the carriage body below the first in-rigger, the first and the second in-riggers each having an inner surface from which a protrusion extends, each of the protrusions being disposed proximal to the magnet when the carriage assembly is mounted within the disk drive, the carriage assembly being mountable in the disk drive so that the central guide track extends through the passage and the carriage assembly is free to rotate about the central guide track, one of the protrusions contacting the magnet when the central guide track rotates in a first direction about the central guide track to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly in the first direction and the other of the protrusions contacting the magnet when the central guide track rotates in a second direction about the central guide track to prevent further rotation of the carriage assembly about the central guide track in the second direction, the first and the second in-riggers thereby preventing any significant rotation of the carriage assembly about the central guide track; and
- a coil coupled to an outer surface of the first in-rigger and an outer surface of the second in-rigger, the coil cooperating with the magnet to move the carriage assembly.
- 14. The disk drive of claim 13, wherein the first and the second in-riggers are integrally formed with the carriage body.
