Claims
- 1. A composite cell culture comprising:a first layer comprising chondrocytes in an extracellular matrix; a second layer, disposed on the first layer, comprising type I collagen; and a third layer, disposed on the second layer, comprising cells other than chondrocytes at least partially covering the second layer.
- 2. The composite cell culture according to claim 1, wherein the cells are epithelial cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, epidermal cells, muscle cells, or combinations thereof.
- 3. The composite cell culture according to claim 2, wherein the cells are epithelial cells.
- 4. The composite cell culture according to claim 3, wherein the epithelial cells are upper respiratory epithelial cells.
- 5. The composite cell culture according to claim 3, wherein the epithelial cells are present as a plurality of distinct plaques dispersed throughout the third layer.
- 6. The composite cell culture according to claim 5, wherein the extracellular matrix is type II collagen.
- 7. The composite cell culture according to claim 1, wherein the chondrocytes are articular or upper airway cartilage chondrocytes.
- 8. The composite cell culture according to claim 7, wherein the cells are upper respiratory epithelial cells.
- 9. The composite cell culture according to claim 8, wherein the upper respiratory epithelial cells are present as a plurality of distinct plaques dispersed throughout the third layer.
- 10. The composite cell culture according to claim 7, wherein the extracellular matrix is type II collagen.
- 11. The composite cell culture according to claim 7, wherein chondrocytes are upper airway cartilage chondrocytes.
