Claims
- 1. A process for producing a composition of matter comprising a mixture of hydrocarbons having the structures: ##STR48## wherein the mole ratio of the compound having the structure: ##STR49## to the compound having the structure: ##STR50## is from 29:24 down to 24:33 comprising the step of reacting isoamylene with alpha methyl styrene according to the reaction: ##STR51## in the presence of a heterogeneous solid catalyst selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) acid clays; and
- (ii) acid ion exchange resins,
- the weight ratio of isoamylene to alpha methyl styrene being 400:590; the ratio of catalyst to isoamylene varying from 1:32 up to 1:8; the reaction temperature being between 100.degree. C. and 175.degree. C; and the reaction pressure being between 50 psig and 300 psig.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the catalyst is a silico phosphoric acid catalyst.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the catalyst is a sulfonated copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene containing 4% divinyl benzene monomeric units.
