Claims
- 1. An indole alkaloid compound having the formula ##STR5## where R and R' are an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms or --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n=0to16.
- 2. An indole alkaloid compound according to claim 1 wherein R and R' are methyl.
- 3. An indole alkaloid compound according to claim 1 wherein R and R' are --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n is 0.
- 4. A pharmaceutical preparation for use as a UV protective or anti-inflammatory agent comprising:
- an effective amount of an indole alkaloid compound having the formula ##STR6## where R and R' are an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms or --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n=0 to 16; and
- a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for said compound.
- 5. A pharmaceutical preparation for use as a UV protective or anti-inflammatory agent according to claim 4 wherein R and R' are methyl.
- 6. A pharmaceutical preparation for use as a UV protective or anti-inflammatory agent according to claim 4 wherein R and R' are --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n is 0.
- 7. A method for treating the skin of a mammal to provide UV protection for the skin of said mammal, said method comprising the step of administering to the skin of said mammal a UV protective amount of an indole alkaloid having the formula: ##STR7## where R and R' are an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms or --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n=0to 16.
- 8. A method for treating the skin of a mammal to provide UV protection for the skin of said mammal according to claim 7 wherein R and R' are methyl.
- 9. A method for treating the skin of a mammal to provide UV protection for the skin of said mammal according to claim 7 wherein R and R' are --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n is 0.
- 10. A compound for use as a UV protective and/or anti-inflammation agent, said compound comprising the reduction product of an indole alkaloid having a formula according to claim 1.
- 11. A compound for use as a UV protective and/or anti-inflammation agent, said compound comprising the reduction product of an indole alkaloid having a formula according to claim 2.
- 12. A compound for use as a UV protective and/or anti-inflammation agent, said compound comprising the reduction product of an indole alkaloid having a formula according to claim 3.
- 13. A method for treating the skin of a mammal to provide UV protection for the skin of said mammal, said method comprising the step of administering to the skin of said mammal a UV protective amount of the reduction product of an indole alkaloid having a formula according to claim 1.
