Claims
- 1. A method for inducing the settlement and metamorphosis of Crassostrea viginica larvae comprising exposing said larvae in an aqueous medium to melanin-synthesizing bacteria of the genus Alteromonas for a time and under conditions sufficient to induce the settlement and metamorphosis of said oyster larvae.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the species of said melanin-,synthesizing bacteria is A. colwelliana.
- 3. A method for inducing the settlement and metamorphosis of Crassostrea virginica larvae comprising exposing said larvae in aqueous medium to the metabolic products of a melanin-synthesizing marine bacteria of the genus Alteromonas for a time and under conditions sufficient to induce the settlement and metamorphosis of said larvae, said metabolic products selected from the group consisting essentially of melanin, dihydroxyphenylalanine, pheomelanin, tyrosine, tyrosinase, tyrosinase related enzymes, NH3, the catecholamine products of tyrosinase having a molecular weight of less than about 350 daltons, PAVE, trihydroxyphenylalanine and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the species of said melanin-synthesizing bacteria is A. colwelliana.
- 5. The method of claims 1 wherein the bacteria are provided with a suitable surface material to effect affixment of said bacteria.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the surface material is clutch, glass, plastic or aluminum.
- 7. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 33887 and mutants of said bacteria.
- 8. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 33888 and mutants of said bacteria.
- 9. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 39565 and mutants, of said bacteria.
- 10. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 27126 and mutants of said bacteria.
- 11. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 23327 and mutants of said bacteria.
- 12. The method of claims 1 or 3 wherein the bacteria have the identifying characteristics of ATCC number 53761 and mutants of said bacteria.
- 13. A method for inducing the settlement and metamorphosis of Crassostrea virginica larvae comprising exposing said larvae in aqueous medium to ammonia (NH.sub.3) in concentrations and under conditions sufficient to induce the settlement and metamorphosis of said bacteria.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the concentration of said ammonia is about 2.times.10.sup.-3 M to about 2.times.10.sup.-2 M at a pH of about 8.0.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein said concentration is about 8.times.10.sup.-3 M at a pH of about 8.0.
