Claims
- 1. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening; (c) at least first and second panels slidably mounted in said access opening on said track, each of said panels including a leading portion and a rear portion, at least the first of said panels including a catch mounted on said leading portion, said catch shaped and dimensioned to contact the leading portion of said second panel and pull said second panel simultaneously with said first panel when said first panel is moving in a selected direction; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first and second portions; (g) a fastener securing said first portion said first panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said first panel; (i) a motor for driving said first pulley: (j) a control system for activating said motor; (k) manually operated control panel mounted on said building structure and operatively associated with said control system to generate a signal to said control system to activate said motor.
- 2. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening and including an elongate horizontally oriented space extending along said track; (c) at least a first panel slidably mounted in said access opening on said track, said panel including a leading portion and a rear portion; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first and second portions, said first portion extending through said space in said track; (g) a fastener securing said first portion to said panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said panel; (i) a motor for driving said first pulley: (j) a control system for activating said motor.
- 3. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening; (c) at least a first panel slidably mounted in said access opening on said track and including a leading portion, a rear portion, a top, and a bottom; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side and from said bottom of said panel; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side and from said bottom of said panel; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first and second portions; (g) a fastener securing said first portion to said bottom of said panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said bottom of said panel; (i) a motor for driving said first pulley; and, (j) a control system for activating said motor.
- 4. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening; (c) at least first and second panels slidably mounted in said access opening on said track, each of said panels including a leading portion and a rear portion; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first, second, and third portions; (g) a fastener securing said first portion to said first panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said first panel; (i) a fastener securing said third portion to said second panel; (j) a motor for driving said first pulley such that said pulley moves said belt and said belt simultaneously moves said first and second panels in opposing directions; (k) a control system for activating said motor; and, (l) manually operated control panel mounted on said building structure and operatively associated with said control system to generate a signal to said control system to activate said motor.
- 5. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening; (c) at least a first panel slidably mounted in said access opening on said track and including a leading portion, a rear portion, a top, and a bottom; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side and from said bottom of said panel; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side and from said bottom of said panel; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first and second portions; (g) a fastener securing said first portion to said bottom of said panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said bottom of said panel; (i) guides for directing said belt along a non-linear path intermediate said pulleys; (j) a motor for driving said first pulley; and, (k) a control system for activating said motor.
- 6. A method for retrofitting an access system for a building structure, said access system including
an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides, a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening and including an elongate horizontally oriented space extending along said track, and at least a first panel slidably mounted in said access opening on said track, said panel including a leading portion and a rear portion, said method including the steps of
(a) mounting a first rotatable pulley at a position lateral from said first side; (b) mounting a second rotatable pulley at a position lateral from said second side; (c) extending a belt through said elongate space and mounting said belt on said first and second rotatable pulleys, said belt including a first portion and a second portion; (d) fastening said first portion of said belt to said panel; (e) fastening said second portion of said belt to said panel; and, (f) mounting a motor to drive said belt to move said panel along said track.
- 7. An access system for a building structure, including
(a) an access opening formed in the building structure and having first and second sides; (b) a horizontally oriented track extending across said opening; (c) at least first and second panels slidably mounted in said access opening on said track, each of said panels including a leading portion and a rear portion, said first panel being canted with respect to said second panel; (d) a first rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said first side; (e) a second rotatable pulley mounted at a position lateral from said second side; (f) a belt extending around said first and second rotatable pulleys and including first and second portions; (g) a fastener securing said first portion said first panel and said second panel; (h) a fastener securing said second portion to said first panel; (i) a motor for driving said first pulley to move said first panel in a first direction of travel and said second panel in a second direction of travel different from and at an angle to said first direction of travel; and, (j) a control system for activating said motor.
