Claims
- 1. A method for allocation of cost savings for members of a network of processing centers, which network generates a net savings in processing costs by transferring items between network processing centers prior to delivery to a final destination, comprising
(a) determining a value of labor performed by each network processing center in processing of items received from or sent to each of the other network processing centers; (b) determining a value of costs incurred by each network processing center in processing of items received from or sent each of the other network processing centers; (c) determining a value of cost savings generated by each network processing center by comparing an actual cost to a benchmark cost; and (d) making balancing payments between entities controlling the network processing centers based on the values determined in (a), (b) and (c).
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the benchmark cost is an estimated cost calculated based upon an assumption that the network did not exist.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein a financial clearinghouse entity receives deposit payments from entities controlling the network processing centers and makes the balancing payments of step (d) by making transfers between deposit accounts.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the items are mail-like items.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein step (c) includes calculating savings on postage.
- 6. The method of claim 5 where the network of processing centers comprises a plurality of private processing centers each having an associated set of one or more destination codes, a plurality of which processing centers are originating processing centers that receive mail items from originators.
- 7. A system for distributing mail items, which mail items are created by a number of originators for delivery to a number of recipients having different addresses through a postal service, which postal service has a set of postal regional sorting centers having an associated set of postal regions, which postal regional sorting centers sort incoming mail pieces for shipment to local post offices within the associated postal region for delivery to the recipients, comprising:
a plurality of private processing centers each having an associated set of one or more destination codes, a plurality of which processing centers are originating processing centers that receive mail items from originators; wherein the originating processing centers sort the mail items received from originators into groups by the sets of destination codes for transfer of each group of mail items having a destination code different from one of those associated with the originating processing center to a corresponding destination processing center; and wherein a plurality of the destination processing centers sort mail pieces from originating processing centers, together with any mail pieces received directly from originators having a destination code which corresponds to one of those associated with the destination processing center, into batches effective to reduce total postage as compared to postage for mailing the same mail pieces with the postal service in an unsorted condition.
- 8. The system of claim 7, wherein two or more of the processing centers are both originating and destination processing centers.
- 9. The system of claim 7, wherein one or more of the processing centers are originating processing centers only.
- 10. The system of claim 7, further comprising:
a computerized information system transmitting data concerning volumes of mail items to be transferred to other processing centers from the data center of each processing center to a central process data center, calculating for one processing center, using the transmitted data, the total volumes of mail items to be transferred from other processing centers to that processing center, and transmitting to the data center for the one processing center such data concerning volumes of mail items to be transferred from other processing centers.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the system further modifies service prices to customers based on measurements of item transit time or sequential location as a function of time.
- 12. The system of claim 10, wherein the system transmits data concerning volumes of mail items to be transferred from other processing centers for each data center on a periodic basis.
- 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the system determines estimated arrival times for mail items to be transferred to the one processing center using the data concerning volumes of mail items to be transferred from other processing centers.
- 14. The system of claim 7, further comprising a financial system for distributing total compensation which is based on total costs saved according to a predetermined apportionment method to controlling entities of the processing centers.
- 15. The system of claim 7, further comprising a financial system for distributing total compensation which is based on differential volumes processed according to a predetermined apportionment method to controlling entities of the processing centers.
- 16. A system for allocation of cost savings for members of a network of processing centers, which network generates a net savings in processing costs by transferring items between network processing centers prior to delivery to a final destination, comprising a computerized system that:
(a) determines a value of labor performed by each processing center in processing of items received from or sent to other processing centers; (b) determines a value of costs incurred by each processing center in processing of items received from or sent to other processing centers; (c) determines a value of cost savings generated by each processing center by comparing an actual cost to a benchmark cost; and (d) makes balancing payments between entities controlling the processing centers based on the values determined in (a), (b) and (c).
- 17. The system of claim 16, further comprising a financial clearinghouse entity that receives deposit payments from entities controlling the processing centers, wherein the payments of step (d) are made using deposit accounts maintained by the financial clearinghouse entity.
- 18. The system of claim 16, wherein a financial clearinghouse entity receives deposit payments from entities controlling the network processing centers and makes the balancing payments of step (d) by making transfers between deposit accounts.
- 19. The system of claim 16, wherein the benchmark cost is an estimated cost calculated based upon an assumption that the network did not exist.
- 20. The system of claim 16 where the network of processing centers comprises a plurality of private processing centers each having an associated set of one or more destination codes, a plurality of which processing centers are originating processing centers that receive items from originators.
- 21. The system of claim 16, further comprising:
a computerized information system transmitting data concerning volumes of items to be transferred between the processing centers from the data center of each processing center to a central process data center, calculating for one processing center, using the transmitted data, the total volumes of mail items to be transferred from other processing centers to that one processing center, and transrmitting to the data center for that processing center such data concerning volumes of items to be transferred from other processing centers.
