Claims
- 1. A puncturing device for puncturing a wall, comprising:
a substantially longitudinal prong comprising a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong, running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong, and terminating at the puncturing surface; and a substantially planar face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 2. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the puncturing surface comprises a sharp point.
- 3. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the prong further comprises a base coupled to the proximal end of the prong.
- 4. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the primary cutting edge is sharp.
- 5. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the primary cutting edge is jagged.
- 6. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the primary cutting edge is serrated.
- 7. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the substantially planar face has a slight concave curvature.
- 8. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the prong is tapered so that the distal end of the prong is smaller than the proximal end of the prong, to facilitate removing the prong from the wall.
- 9. The puncturing device of claim 1, further comprising an angled surface disposed on the distal end of the prong, the angled surface having a distal end terminating at the puncturing surface and a proximal end terminating at the substantially planar face.
- 10. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the puncturing device is made by injection molding.
- 11. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the puncturing device is made of metal.
- 12. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the puncturing device is made of ceramic.
- 13. The puncturing device of claim 1, wherein the puncturing device is made of plastic.
- 14. The puncturing device of claim 1, further comprising
a plurality of longitudinal faces and a plurality of longitudinal edges disposed on the periphery of the prong between the primary cutting edge and the substantially planar face, and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 15. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein the number of longitudinal faces is four.
- 16. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein the number of longitudinal faces is two.
- 17. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein the number of longitudinal edges is four.
- 18. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein the number of longitudinal edges is two.
- 19. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein a cross section of the prong is substantially a pentagon.
- 20. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein a cross section of the prong is substantially a triangle.
- 21. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is sharp.
- 22. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is jagged.
- 23. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is serrated.
- 24. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is blunt.
- 25. The puncturing device of claim 14, wherein each of the plurality of longitudinal faces is substantially planar.
- 26. The puncturing device of claim 25, wherein each of the plurality of longitudinal faces has a slight concave curvature.
- 27. A puncturing assembly comprising a plurality of puncturing devices of claim 1.
- 28. The puncturing assembly of claim 27, further comprising a base coupled to each of the plurality of puncturing devices.
- 29. The puncturing assembly of claim 28, wherein the puncturing assembly is substantially U-shaped.
- 30. The puncturing assembly of claim 27, wherein the puncturing assembly is made by injection molding.
- 31. A puncturing device comprising:
a substantially longitudinal prong comprising a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong and terminating at the puncturing surface; a face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge; wherein the prong is configured to create an opening in a wall by forming a hanging chad in the wall, the hanging chad having a free end formed by the puncturing surface and the primary cutting edge and a hinge coupled to the wall formed by the face.
- 32. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the puncturing surface comprises a sharp point.
- 33. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the prong further comprises a base coupled to the proximal end of the prong.
- 34. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the primary cutting edge is sharp.
- 35. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the primary cutting edge is jagged.
- 36. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the primary cutting edge is serrated.
- 37. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the face is substantially planar.
- 38. The puncturing device of claim 37, wherein the face has a slight concave curvature.
- 39. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the prong is tapered so that the distal end of the prong is smaller than the proximal end of the prong, to facilitate removing the prong from the wall.
- 40. The puncturing device of claim 31, further comprising an angled surface disposed on the distal end of the prong, the angled surface having a distal end terminating at the puncturing surface and a proximal end terminating at the substantially planar face.
- 41. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the puncturing device is made by injection molding.
- 42. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the puncturing device is made of metal.
- 43. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the puncturing device is made of ceramic.
- 44. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the puncturing device is made of plastic.
- 45. The puncturing device of claim 31, wherein the prong has a length and the prong is insertable into the receptacle at least ¾ of the length of the prong without breaking off the hanging chad.
- 46. The puncturing device of claim 31, further comprising
a plurality of longitudinal faces and a plurality of longitudinal edges disposed on the periphery of the prong between the primary cutting edge and the substantially planar face, and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 47. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein the number of longitudinal faces is four.
- 48. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein the number of longitudinal faces is two.
- 49. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein the number of longitudinal edges is four.
- 50. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein the number of longitudinal edges is two.
- 51. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein a cross section of the prong is substantially a pentagon.
- 52. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein a cross section of the prong is substantially a triangle.
- 53. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is sharp.
- 54. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is jagged.
- 55. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is serrated.
- 56. The puncturing device of claim 46, wherein one or more of the plurality of longitudinal edges is blunt.

- 59. A puncturing assembly comprising a plurality of puncturing devices of claim 46.
- 60. The puncturing assembly of claim 59, further comprising a base coupled to each of the plurality of puncturing devices.
- 61. The puncturing assembly of claim 60, wherein the puncturing assembly is substantially U-shaped.
- 62. The puncturing assembly of claim 59, wherein the puncturing assembly is made by injection molding.
- 63. A puncturing device comprising:
a substantially longitudinal prong comprising a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong and terminating at the puncturing surface; a face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge; wherein the prong is configured to form a hanging chad in a wall of a receptacle having a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the prong and a minor axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the hanging chad being opened to an angle of at least 30 degrees with respect to the minor axis.
- 64. A device for administering powder, comprising:
a first casing portion; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, coupled to said first casing portion, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a second casing portion removably coupled to said first casing portion, said second casing portion comprising an inhalation portion disposed at the proximal end of said chamber when said first and said second casing portions are coupled, said inhalation portion comprising a hemispheric region defining a plurality of apertures configured to emit powder therethrough; a substantially longitudinal prong coupled to the first casing portion for puncturing a receptacle containing the powder, the prong having a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong, running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong, and terminating at the puncturing surface; and a substantially planar face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 65. A device for emitting powder, comprising:
a first casing portion; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, coupled to said first casing portion, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a second casing portion removably coupled to said first casing portion, said second casing portion comprising an emitter portion disposed at the proximal end of said chamber when said first and said second casing portions are coupled, said emitter portion defining at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; a substantially longitudinal prong coupled to the first casing portion for puncturing a receptacle containing the powder, the prong having a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong, running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong, and terminating at the puncturing surface; a substantially planar face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 66. A device for emitting powder, comprising:
a casing, said casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, disposed in said casing, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a substantially longitudinal prong coupled to the casing for puncturing a receptacle containing the powder, the prong having a distal end, a proximal end, and a periphery; a puncturing surface disposed on the distal end of the prong; a primary cutting edge disposed on the periphery of the prong, running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong, and terminating at the puncturing surface; and a substantially planar face disposed on the periphery of the prong opposite of the primary cutting edge and running from the proximal end of the prong to the distal end of the prong.
- 67. An indicating device comprising:
a casing; a body disposed within the casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position; an indicator reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; and a means for coupling the body and the indicator; wherein upon a first movement of the body from the first position to the second position the means for coupling couples the body and the indicator, and upon a second movement of the body from the second position to the first position the indicator moves from the rest position to the indicating position.
- 68. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein upon a subsequent movement of the body from the first position to the second position the body and the indicator remain coupled and the indicator moves from the indicating position to the rest position, and upon a subsequent movement of the body from the second position to the first position the body and the indicator remain coupled and the indicator moves from the rest position to the indicating position.
- 69. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein the indicator makes an audible click when the means for coupling couples the body and the indicator.
- 70. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein the indicator is disposed in the casing.
- 71. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein a portion of the indicator is outside of the casing when the indicator is in the indicating position.
- 72. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein the indicator comprises a ring disposed between the casing and the body.
- 73. The indicating device of claim 67, wherein the means for coupling comprises a lip coupled to the indicator and a flange coupled to the body for engaging the lip.
- 74. The indicating device of claim 73, wherein the flange comprises a ratchet surface so that the lip remains locked with the flange once the flange engages the lip.
- 75. The indicating device of claim 73, wherein the means for coupling further comprises a stop coupled to the body for coupling the lip between the stop and the flange.
- 76. The indicating device of claim 67, further comprising a means for decoupling the body and the indicator.
- 77. The indicating device of claim 76, wherein the means for decoupling is configured so that applying an axial force to the indicator disengages the flange from the lip.
- 78. The indicating device of claim 76, wherein the means for decoupling comprises a knob coupled to the indicator.
- 79. A device for emitting powder comprising an indicating device of claim 67.
- 80. The device for emitting powder of claim 79, wherein the indicating device indicates the device is ready for use when the indicator is in the indicating position.
- 81. An indicating device comprising:
a casing; a body disposed within the casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position; an indicator reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; a lip coupled to the indicator; and a flange coupled to the body for engaging the lip; wherein the flange engages the lip upon a first movement of the body from the first position to the second position, and wherein the engagement of the flange to the lip causes the indicator to move from the rest position to the indicating position upon a second movement of the body from the second position to the first position.
- 82. A device for emitting powder, comprising:
a casing, said casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, disposed in said casing, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a body disposed within the casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position; an indicator reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; and a means for coupling the body and the indicator; wherein upon a first movement of the body from the first position to the second position the means for coupling couples the body and the indicator, and upon a second movement of the body from the second position to the first position the indicator moves from the rest position to the indicating position.
- 83. The device for administering powder of claim 82, wherein the casing further comprises a hemispheric region defining said at least one aperture.
- 84. The device for administering powder of claim 82, further comprising a second casing, the body being disposed in the second casing.
- 85. The indicating device of claim 82, wherein upon a subsequent movement of the body from the first position to the second position the body and the indicator remain coupled and the indicator moves from the indicating position to the rest position, and upon a subsequent movement of the body from the second position to the first position the body and the indicator remain coupled and the indicator moves from the rest position to the indicating position.
- 86. The indicating device of claim 82, wherein the indicator makes an audible click when the means for coupling couples the body and the indicator.
- 87. The indicating device of claim 82, wherein a portion of the indicator is outside of the casing when the indicator is in the indicating position.
- 88. The indicating device of claim 82, wherein the indicator comprises a ring disposed between the casing and the body.
- 89. The indicating device of claim 82, wherein the means for coupling comprises a lip coupled to the indicator and a flange coupled to the body for engaging the lip.
- 90. The indicating device of claim 89, wherein the flange comprises a ratchet surface so that the lip remains locked with the flange once the flange engages the lip.
- 91. The indicating device of claim 89, wherein the means for coupling further comprises a stop coupled to the body for coupling the lip between the stop and the flange
- 92. The indicating device of claim 82, further comprising a means for decoupling the body and the indicator.
- 93. The indicating device of claim 92, wherein the means for decoupling is configured so that applying an axial force to the indicator disengages the flange from the lip.
- 94. The indicating device of claim 92, wherein the means for decoupling comprises a knob coupled to the indicator.
- 95. A device for emitting powder, comprising:
a casing, said casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, disposed in said casing, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a body disposed within the casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position; an indicator reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; a lip coupled to the indicator; and a flange coupled to the body for engaging the lip; wherein the flange engages the lip upon a first movement of the body from the first position to the second position while the indicator remains in the rest position, and wherein the engagement of the flange to the lip causes the indicator to move from the rest position to the indicating position upon a second movement of the body from the second position to the first position.
- 96. The device for administering powder of claim 95, wherein the casing further comprises a hemispheric region defining said at least one aperture.
- 97. The device for administering powder of claim 95, further comprising a second casing, the body being disposed in the second casing.
- 98. A device for emitting powder, comprising:
a casing, said casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; a cylindrical chamber, defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section, disposed in said casing, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber; a means for indicating readiness of the device for emitting powder.
- 99. A method for indicating the readiness of a device for dispensing a medicament, comprising:
providing a device for dispensing a medicament, the device comprising
a casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough, a body coupled to said casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position, and an indicator coupled to said casing and reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; applying an axial force to said body to move said body from said first position to said second position, which readies the powder for dispensing and couples said body to said indicator; and releasing said axial force from said body to allow said body to move from said second position to said first position, which moves said indicator to said indicating position.
- 100. The method of claim 99, further comprising
decoupling said indicator from said body; and moving said indicator to said rest position.
- 101. A method of indicating that a device for dispensing a medicament has been used, comprising:
providing a device for dispensing a medicament, the device comprising
a casing comprising at least one aperture configured to emit a medicament therethrough, a body coupled to said casing and reversibly moveable between a first position and a second position, and an indicator coupled to said casing and reversibly moveable between a rest position and an indicating position; applying an axial force to said body to move said body from said first position to said second position, which couples said body to said indicator; dispensing the medicament from the device; releasing said axial force from said body to allow said body to move from said second position to said first position, which moves said indicator to said indicating position to indicate that the device has been used.
- 102. The method of claim 101, further comprising
decoupling said indicator from said body; and moving said indicator to said rest position.
- 103. An inhalation device for administering a dose of powder contained in a receptacle, comprising:
a chamber configured to hold the receptacle, said chamber defined by a wall and having a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner surface, said wall defining a plurality of vents; and an inhalation portion coupled to said proximal end of said chamber, said inhalation portion defining at least one aperture configured to emit powder therethrough; wherein the inhalation device is configured to have a resistance of at most 0.28 (cm H2O)1/2/L/min and to provide an emitted dose of at least 85% when the dose of powder is up to 20 mg and when the device is operated at a peak inspiratory flow rate of 25 L/min or less and at an inhalation volume of 0.75 L or less.
- 104. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein a standard deviation of the emitted dose is 10% or less.
- 105. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein said at least one aperture has an area of 0.018 in2 to 0.022 in2.
- 106. The inhalation device of claim 103, further comprising a ring coupled to an inner surface of the chamber, wherein the ring has an inner diameter of 0.380 inches to 0.400 inches.
- 107. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein said chamber is cylindrical and has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches to 0.440 inches.
- 108. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein the number of said plurality of vents is three to five.
- 109. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches to 0.025 inches.
- 110. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.195 inches to 0.236 inches.
- 111. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein the plurality of vents have an area of 0.014 inches to 0.024 inches.
- 112. The inhalation device of claim 103, further comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of the chamber, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.020 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, said chamber is cylindrical and has an inner diameter of 0.440 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is three, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.236 inches.
- 113. The inhalation device of claim 103, further comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.022 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, said chamber is cylindrical and has an inner diameter of 0.440 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is four, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.236 inches.
- 114. The inhalation device of claim 103, further comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of the chamber, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.022 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.380 inches, said cylindrical chamber has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is five, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.025 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.195 inches.
- 115. The inhalation device of claim 103, wherein the inhalation device is configured to cause the powder to be highly dispersed.
- 116. The inhalation device of claim 115, wherein the volume mean geometric diameter of the powder is 11.8 μm or less.
- 117. An inhalation device for administering powder contained in a receptacle, comprising:
a first casing portion; a cylindrical chamber for holding the receptacle, said chamber defined by a straight wall of circular cross-section coupled to said first casing portion, said chamber having a proximal end and a distal end, said chamber comprising a ring circumferentially coupled to an inner surface of said chamber, said wall defining a plurality of vents; a second casing portion removably coupled to said first casing portion, said second casing portion comprising an inhalation portion disposed at the proximal end of said chamber when said first and said second casing portions are coupled, said inhalation portion comprising a hemispheric region defining a plurality of apertures configured to emit powder therethrough, wherein the inhalation device is configured to have a resistance of at most 0.28 (cm H2O)1/2/L/min and to provide an emitted dose of at least 85% when the dose of powder is up to 20 mg and when the device is operated at a peak inspiratory flow rate of 25 L/min or less and at an inhalation volume of 0.75 L or less.
- 118. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein a standard deviation of the emitted dose is 10% or less.
- 119. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said plurality of apertures has an area of 0.018 in2 to 0.022 in2.
- 120. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said ring has an inner diameter of 0.380 inches to 0.400 inches.
- 121. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said cylindrical chamber has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches to 0.440 inches.
- 122. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is three to five.
- 123. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches to 0.025 inches.
- 124. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.195 inches to 0.236 inches.
- 125. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein the plurality of vents have an area of 0.014 inches to 0.024 inches
- 126. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.020 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, said cylindrical chamber has an inner diameter of 0.440 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is three, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.236 inches.
- 127. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.022 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, said cylindrical chamber has an inner diameter of 0.440 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is four, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.020 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.236 inches.
- 128. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein said at least one aperture has an aggregate area of 0.022 in2, said ring has an inner diameter of 0.380 inches, said cylindrical chamber has an inner diameter of 0.400 inches, wherein a number of said plurality of vents is five, each of said plurality of vents has a width of 0.025 inches, and each of said plurality of vents has a length of 0.195 inches.
- 129. The inhalation device of claim 117, wherein the inhalation device is configured to cause the powder to be highly dispersed.
- 130. The inhalation device of claim 129, wherein the volume mean geometric diameter of the powder is 11.8 μm or less.
