Claims
- 1. A composition for inhibiting beta-lactamase expression in bacteria, comprising a fatty acid selected from the group consisting of caprylic acid, capric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid and a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol selected from the group consisting of 1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,2,4-butanetriol, in an amount effective to inhibit beta-lactamase expression by said bacteria, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein said carrier further comprises an antibiotic selected from the group consisting of amoxicillin, ampicillin, methicillin, penicillin and cephalosporin, and wherein the final effective concentration of said composition is 3-30 .mu.g/ml and the dose of said antibiotic is 500-4000 mg.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said inhibition of beta-lactamase expression is via inhibition of signal transduction for transcription of said beta-lactamase.
- 3. A composition for inhibiting beta-lactamase expression in bacteria, comprising:
- a. a first fatty acid selected from the group consisting of caprylic acid, capric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid and a first polyhydric aliphatic alcohol selected from the group consisting of 1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,2,4-butanetriol;
- b. a second fatty acid selected from the group consisting of caprylic acid, capric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid and a second polyhydric aliphatic alcohol selected from the group consisting of 1,2-ethanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,2,4-butanetriol, and
- c. a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier containing an antibiotic selected from the group consisting of amoxicillin, ampicillin, methicillin, penicillin and cephalosporin.
