Claims
- 1. A method of operating an injection molding machine having a ram which is displaced by an unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly to inject settable material into a mold cavity comprising the steps of:
- controlling the flow of a pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly regeneratively during one portion of the ram displacement in an injection stroke;
- controlling the flow of the pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly nonregeneratively during another portion of the ram displacement in the injection stroke; and
- controlling the flow of the pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly nonregeneratively during at least one portion of the ram displacement in a direction opposite to the injection stroke.
- 2. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 1 wherein the ram moves through a first portion of the ram displacement in an injection stroke while filling the mold cavity with settable material and a second portion of the ram displacement in the injection stroke while packing the settable material in the cavity; and the step of controlling regeneratively in the injection stroke is carried out during the first portion of the displacement and the step of controlling nonregeneratively in the injection stroke is carried out during the second portion.
- 3. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 1 wherein the steps of controlling regeneratively and nonregeneratively in the injection stroke are consecutive and uninterrupted in time.
- 4. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 1 wherein the step of controlling regeneratively in the injection stroke is followed by the step of controlling nonregeneratively in the injection stroke.
- 5. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 12 wherein the step of controlling regeneratively is a timed step.
- 6. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 1 wherein said one portion of the ram displacement in the injection stroke is contiguous with said other portion of the ram displacement in the injection stroke.
- 7. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 1 wherein said one portion of the ram displacement in the injection stroke is associated with filling the mold cavity with settable material; and said other portion of the displacement in the injection stroke is associated with packing the settable material in the cavity.
- 8. A method of operating an injection molding machine having a ram which injects a settable material into a mold cavity and an unbalanced area piston and cylinder assembly for displacing the ram during the injection stroke of the ram comprising:
- displacing the ram during one interval of the injection stroke at one speed by supplying pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly in a regenerative mode of operation;
- displacing the ram during a different interval of the injection stroke and at a different and slower speed by supplying pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly in a nonregenerative mode of operation; and
- displacing the ram during an interval of a return stroke by reversing the supplying of pressurized fluid to the unbalanced piston and cylinder assembly in the nonregenerative mode of operation.
- 9. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 8 wherein the steps of displacing in the regenerative and nonregenerative modes in the injection stroke are performed consecutively without an intervening interval of time.
- 10. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 8 wherein the step of displacing in a regenerative mode is performed during one injection stroke of the ram and the step of displacing in a nonregenerative mode is performed during another injection stroke of the ram.
- 11. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 8 wherein:
- the step of displacing by supplying fluid in a regenerative mode of operation is performed during one part of the injection stroke; and
- the step of displacing by supplying fluid in a nonregenerative mode of operation is performed during another part of the injection stroke.
- 12. A method of operating an injection molding machine as defined in claim 11 wherein the displacing of the ram in the regenerative mode of operation is performed before the displacing of the ram in the nonregenerative mode of operation in the injection stroke.
