Claims
- 1. An injection molding system for forming a multi-layered molded article from at least two plastic molding materials, which comprises:
- a first mold half and a second mold half adapted to cooperate to form at least one mold cavity for forming the molded article, said mold cavity having a peripheral edge region;
- a first injection means positioned in said first mold half in communication with said at least one cavity for injecting a first plastic molding material into said at least one cavity through a first orifice;
- a second injection means positioned in said second mold half in communication with said at least one cavity for injecting a second plastic molding into said at least one cavity while the first plastic molding material is still in the fluid state in said at least one cavity, said second plastic molding material being injected through a second orifice unconnected with said first orifice, wherein said second plastic molding material is different from said first plastic molding material;
- at least one hot runner manifold communicating with at least one of the injection means;
- wherein the first and second injection means are operative to sequentially inject first and second plastic molding materials into said cavity so that the first injected plastic is forced to the edge region of said cavity to form substantially the entire edge region of the multi-layered article, and the second injected plastic forms the interior of the multi-layered article with the first injected plastic substantially completely surrounding the second injected plastic.
- 2. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first and second injection means are positioned substantially directly opposite each other.
- 3. The system according to claim 2, wherein said first injection means is a single material injection nozzle and said second injection means is a coinjection nozzle.
- 4. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first injection means comprises a first injection nozzle positioned in an opening within said first mold half such that said first material is distributed in said at least one cavity upon the actuation of said first injection nozzle and said second injection means comprises a second injection nozzle positioned in an opening within said second mold half such that said second material is distributed in said at least one cavity upon the actuation of said second injection nozzle.
- 5. The system according to claim 4, wherein said first injection nozzle is adapted to inject a first material having a first viscosity and said second injection nozzle is adapted to inject a second material having a second viscosity, said second viscosity being larger than said first viscosity.
- 6. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first injection means includes a first injection unit and a first injection nozzle, with said first injection unit and first injection nozzle being substantially in line.
- 7. The system according to claim 6, wherein said second injection means includes a second injection unit and a second injection nozzle, with said second injection unit positioned substantially perpendicular to said second injection nozzle.
- 8. The system according to claim 7, wherein said first injection means includes a first injection unit and a first injection nozzle positioned on the same horizontal plane, and wherein said second injection means includes a second injection unit and a second injection nozzle, with the second injection unit being spaced vertically from said second injection nozzle.
- 9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the second injection means includes a manifold for heating the second plastic molding material prior to injection of said second plastic molding material into said cavity.
- 10. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first and second mold halves form a plurality of cavities positioned adjacent each other, said system further comprising a set of said first and said second injection means positioned directly opposite each other for each cavity of said plurality of cavities.
- 11. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first and second injection means are substantially offset from each other.
- 12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said cavity has a substantially nonuniform cross section comprising a first portion and a second portion, said first portion being larger than said second portion, said first injection means being positioned adjacent said second portion and said second injection means being positioned adjacent said first portion.
- 13. The system according to claim 12, further comprising a retractable partition positioned in said cavity between said injection means.
- 14. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a sheet means for separating said article into two portions, said sheet means positioned in said cavity between said first and second mold halves.
- 15. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first mold half includes at least one female mold and said second mold half includes at least one mold core.
- 16. The system according to claim 15, wherein said at least one of said mold core and female mold is movable relative to said mold cavity for altering the shape of said cavity.
- 17. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first mold half and said second mold half are each female mold halves.
- 18. The system according to claim 1, wherein said first injection means is connected to a first material supply source and said second injection means is connected to a second material supply source wherein said first and second sources are unconnected to each other.
- 19. The system according to claim 1 including a first hot runner manifold communicating with the first injection means and a second hot runner manifold communicating with the second injection means.
