Claims
- 1. A process which comprises incorporating into an ink jet printer an ink composition comprising an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and a polymeric additive of the formula ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl groups with from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and alkoxy groups with from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups with from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and x and y are each independently a number of from about 100 to about 400, present in an amount of at least about 1 part per million, and causing droplets of the ink composition to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein x and y are each independently a number of from about 100 to about 200.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric additive is present in an amount of from about 0.0001 percent by weight to about 1 percent by weight.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric additive is present in an amount of from about 0.0001 percent by weight to about 0.5 percent by weight.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric additives of the formula ##STR10## wherein x and y are each independently a number of from about 100 to about 400.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein the aqueous liquid vehicle comprises water and a humectant.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein the humectant is cyclohexyl pyrrolidone.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the colorant is a dye.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein the colorant is a pigment.
- 10. A process according to claim 1 wherein the liquid vehicle is present in an amount of from about 75 to about 99 percent by weight and the colorant is present in an amount of from about 1 to about 15 percent by weight.
- 11. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymeric additive has a molecular weight of from about 14,000 to about 22,000.
- 12. A process according to claim 1 wherein the viscosity of the ink is from about 1 to about 5 centipoise.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein the ink jet printer is a thermal ink jet printer and the droplets are caused to be ejected by heating the ink and causing bubbles to from therein.
- 14. A process according to claim 13 wherein x and y are each independently a number of from about 100 to about 200.
- 15. A process according to claim 13 wherein the polymeric additives is present in an amount of from about 0.0001 percent by weight to about 1 percent by weight.
- 16. A process according to claim 13 wherein the polymeric additive is present in an amount of from about 0.0001 percent by weight to about 0.5 percent by weight.
