Claims
- 1. An ink jet recording apparatus with a recording head having at least one discharge opening from which ink is discharged, recovery execution means for performing a clearing operation to clear a predetermined amount of waste ink from said discharge opening to prevent a discharge failure of said recording head, and waste ink receiving means for receiving the waste ink cleared from said discharge opening, said waste ink receiving means having a predetermined capacity, and a recovery control section comprising:
- counting means for counting a cumulative number of ink clearing operations performed by said recovery execution means;
- memory means for storing the cumulative number counted by said counting means;
- comparing means for comparing, before execution of an ink clearing operation, the cumulative number stored in said memory means with a predetermined upper limit value indicative of a maximum number of ink clearing operations that can be performed, the upper limit value being determined with respect to the capacity of said waste ink receiving means; and
- control means for producing, when said comparing means indicates that the cumulative number exceeds the upper limit value, a changing signal indicating that said waste ink receiving means should be changed.
- 2. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are provided on opposite sides within said apparatus.
- 3. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a paper feeding section disposed substantially in a center area of said apparatus and said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are provided on opposite sides of said paper feeding section.
- 4. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are of approximately a same capacity and which are provided on opposite sides within said apparatus, said apparatus having a pair of handles disposed so that a line interconnecting said pair of handles is substantially parallel to a line interconnecting said pair of waste ink containers.
- 5. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said apparatus is a multi-color recording apparatus having a plurality of said recording heads for discharging a plurality of inks each of a different color, and wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises first and second waste ink containers which are provided so that waste ink removed from at least two of said recording heads is received in said first waste ink container while waste ink from remaining said recording heads is collected in said second waste ink container.
- 6. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of said waste ink receiving means are provided and used selectively.
- 7. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said recording head discharges a droplet of the ink by application of a thermal energy.
- 8. An ink jet recording apparatus having a recording head provided with at least one discharge opening from which ink is discharged, recovery execution means for performing a clearing operation to clear a predetermined amount of waste ink from said discharge opening to prevent a discharge failure of said recording head, and waste ink receiving means for receiving the waste ink cleared from said discharge opening, said waste ink receiving means having a predetermined capacity, and a recovery control section comprising:
- counting means for counting a cumulative number of ink clearing operations performed by said recovery execution means;
- memory means for storing the cumulative number counted by said counting means;
- comparing means for comparing, before execution of an ink clearing operation, the cumulative number stored in said memory means with a predetermined upper limit value indicative of a maximum number of ink clearing operations that can be performed, the upper limit value being determined with respect to the capacity of said waste ink receiving means, said comparing means being adapted to compare, when the cumulative number is smaller than the upper limit value, the cumulative number with a second value representing a predetermined number of ink clearing operations lower than the maximum number that can be performed; and
- control means for producing, when said comparing means indicates that the cumulative number exceeds the upper limit value, a changing signal indicating that said waste ink receiving means should be changed, said control means also being adapted to generate a changing preparation signal indicating a need to prepare to change said waste ink receiving means when the cumulative number is below the upper limit value but above the second value.
- 9. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are provided on opposite sides within said apparatus.
- 10. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, further comprising a paper feeding section disposed substantially in a center area of said apparatus and said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are provided on opposite sides of said paper feeding section.
- 11. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises a pair of waste ink containers which are of approximately the a same capacity and which are provided on opposite sides within said apparatus, said apparatus having a pair of handles disposed so that a line interconnecting pair of handles is substantially parallel to a line interconnecting said pair of waste ink containers.
- 12. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said apparatus is a multi-color recording apparatus having a plurality of said recording heads for discharging a plurality of inks each of a different color, and wherein said waste ink receiving means further comprises first and second waste ink containers which are provided so that waste ink removed from at least two of said recording heads is received in said first waste ink container while waste ink from remaining said recording heads is collected in said second waste ink container.
- 13. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, wherein a plurality of said waste ink receiving means are provided and used selectively.
- 14. An ink jet recording apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said recording head discharges a droplet of the ink by application of a thermal energy.
