Claims
- 1. An ink ribbon cartridge and an installation device for a printer having a print head and a locator pin, the ink ribbon cartridge having an ink ribbon, the ink ribbon having an ink ribbon portion passing outside the cartridge and adapted to extend along a non-linear printer path to the print head, wherein the installation device facilitates the mounting of the cartridge in the printer, wherein the installation device includes an arm, means for movably mounting the arm to the cartridge and a guide on the arm, the arm being pivotal to an extended position in which the guide is spaced outwardly from the cartridge and the ink ribbon portion passes about the guide along a non-linear path generally aligned with the printer path as the cartridge is loaded onto the printer, wherein the mounting means enables the arm and its guide to be moved to an effective position for loading of the ink ribbon cartridge into the printer, wherein the cartridge includes a tubular guide for guiding the ink ribbon, wherein the tubular guide is adapted to receive the locator pin, and wherein the mounting means includes a pivot received in the tubular guide prior to loading the cartridge onto the printer.
- 2. An ink ribbon cartridge for a printer having a print head and a cooperable platen, the print head and the platen being movable relatively together into printing cooperation, a pair of locator pins and means for providing a path for travel of an ink ribbon from an ink ribbon supply roll, to between the print head and platen and to a position for winding the spent ink ribbon; the cartridge including means for facilitating insertion of the ink ribbon into the gap along the path, wherein the facilitating means includes a pair of guides for receiving the locator pins, wherein the guides guide the ink ribbon as the ink ribbon travels along the path when the print head and platen are in cooperation, and the facilitating means further includes another guide to align the ink ribbon with the gap during insertion of the cartridge into the printer.
- 3. Method of loading an ink ribbon onto a printer having a print head, a platen cooperable with the print head, the print head and the platen being movable apart relative to each other to define a gap, and a pair of locator pins, the method comprising the steps of: providing an ink ribbon cartridge including an ink ribbon wound onto a supply spool, a take-up spool for winding spent ink ribbon, an installation device pivotably movable between retracted and extended positions, the installation device including an ink ribbon guide for aligning the ink ribbon with the gap when the installation device is in the extended position, moving the print head and the platen apart relative to each other, moving the installation device to its extended position to swing the ribbon guide outwardly from the cartridge, and thereafter shifting the cartridge along the locator pins to position the ink ribbon in the gap, and thereafter moving the print head and the platen relatively toward each other into printing cooperation.
- 4. Method of installing an ink ribbon cartridge onto a printer having a locator pin, comprising the steps of: providing an ink ribbon cartridge having a cartridge housing defining interior space for housing an ink ribbon, wherein the ink ribbon has an ink ribbon portion which passes outside the housing, wherein the housing mounts a tubular guide for guiding the ink ribbon, wherein the locator pin is adapted to be received by the guide, providing an arm with a pivot received in the tubular guide and another guide, temporarily maintaining the other guide spaced from the housing to cause the ink ribbon portion to follow a non-linear path corresponding generally to a printer path along which the ink ribbon portion would pass while in an operating position in a printer, and locating the cartridge into the printer by inserting the tubular guide onto the locator pin.
- 5. Method of installing an ink ribbon cartridge onto a printer, comprising the steps of: providing an ink ribbon cartridge having a cartridge housing defining interior space for housing an ink ribbon, wherein an ink ribbon portion of the ink ribbon passes outside the housing, wherein the housing mounts a tubular guide roller for guiding the ink ribbon, wherein a printer mounting pin is adapted to be received by the guide roller, providing an arm with a pivot received in the guide roller and a guide, temporarily maintaining the guide spaced from the housing to cause the ink ribbon portion to follow a non-linear path corresponding generally to a printer path along which the ink ribbon portion would pass while in an operating position in a printer, and locating the cartridge into the printer which causes both the insertion of the mounting pin into the tubular guide roller and stripping of the pivot from the tubular guide roller to effect removal of the arm from the cartridge.
