Claims
- 1. A dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member formed of a porous material mounted within the ink-supply tank;
- a printing mechanism for applying ink from said ink absorbing member to effect dot matrix printing; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member comprising an elongated member, said elongated member extending from said first wall into the interior of said tank at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at the distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member to permit ink to flow from said opening toward said printing mechanism, at least a portion of said elongated member defining at least said opening and a portion of said passage being defined by a non-porous material, said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening.
- 2. The dot matrix printer of claim 1, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 3. The dot matrix printer of claim 2, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 4. The dot matrix printer of claim 1, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 5. The dot matrix printer of claim 4, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 6. The dot matrix printer of claim 4, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 7. The dot matrix printer of claim 1, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 8. The dot matrix printer of claim 7, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 9. The dot matrix printer of claim 7, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 10. The dot matrix printer of claim 9, wherein said second wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 11. The dot matrix printer of claim 7, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 12. The dot matrix printer of claim 1, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said elongated member.
- 13. The dot matrix printer of claim 12, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 14. The dot matrix printer of claim 12, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface.
- 15. The dot matrix printer of claim 14, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 16. The dot matrix printer of claim 14, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 17. The dot matrix printer of claim 12, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 18. An ink-supply tank for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member mounted within the ink-supply tank; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member comprising an elongated member, said elongated member extending from said first wall into the interior of said tank at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at the distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member to permit ink to flow away from said opening, at least a portion of said elongated member defining at least said opening and a portion of said passage being defined by a non-porous material, said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening.
- 19. The ink-supply tank of claim 18, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 20. The ink-supply tank of claim 19, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 21. The ink-supply tank of claim 18, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 22. The ink-supply tank of claim 21, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 23. The ink-supply tank of claim 21, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 24. The ink-supply tank of claim 18, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 25. The ink-supply tank of claim 24, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 26. The ink-supply tank of claim 24, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink supply tank was designed to hold.
- 27. The ink-supply tank of claim 26, wherein said second wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 28. The ink-supply tank of claim 24, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 29. The ink-supply tank of claim 18, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said elongated member.
- 30. The ink-supply tank of claim 29, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 31. The ink-supply tank of claim 29, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said wall surface.
- 32. The ink-supply tank of claim 31, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 33. The ink-supply tank of claim 29, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 34. The ink-supply tank of claim 31, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and the inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 35. A method for supplying ink for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- providing an ink absorbing member mounted within an ink-supply tank;
- providing an elongated member extending into said ink-supply tank so that the distal end of the elongated member engages the ink absorbing member;
- forming the elongated member with an opening at the distal end thereof, and with a passage which extends longitudinally therealong said elongated member from said opening to permit ink to flow to the exterior of said ink-supply tank for delivery to a dot matrix printer, at least a portion of said elongated member defining at least said opening and a portion of said passage being defined by a non-porous material;
- providing a first wall in said ink-supply tank from which said elongated member extends into the interior of said tank and a second wall in said ink-supply tank extending substantially in the same direction as said elongated member, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- providing said elongated member so that it projects from said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall; and
- withdrawing said ink from said ink-supply tank through said opening in and passage along said elongated member for delivery to the dot matrix printer.
- 36. The method of claim 35, wherein said elongated member is provided so that said extending elongated member occupies substantially less than the entire area of the wall of the ink-supply tank from which it extends.
- 37. The method of claim 35, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided as a unitary piece of porous material.
- 38. The method of claim 37, wherein said unitary piece of porous material is provided so as to substantially fill the ink-supply tank.
- 39. The method of claim 38, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 40. The method of claim 35, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided in the form of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 42. The method of claim 40, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 43. The method of claim 40, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 44. The method of claim 35, including the further step of applying ink to said ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 45. The method of claim 35, including the further step of locally compressing said ink absorbing member at least in the region thereof facing said opening by the engagement of said ink absorbing member by at least said distal end of said elongated member.
- 46. An ink supply system for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member formed of a porous material mounted within the ink-supply tank;
- a printing mechanism for applying ink from said ink absorbing member to effect dot matrix printing; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member comprising an elongated member, said elongated member extending from said first wall into the interior of said tank at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at the distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member to permit ink to flow from said opening toward said printing mechanism, at least a portion of said elongated member defining at least said opening and a portion of said passage being defined by a non-porous material, said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening.
- 47. The ink supply system of claim 46, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 48. The ink supply system of claim 47, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 49. The ink supply system of claim 46, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 50. The ink supply system of claim 49, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 51. The ink supply system of claim 49, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 52. The ink supply system of claim 46, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 53. The ink supply system of claim 52, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 54. The ink supply system of claim 52, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 55. The ink supply system of claim 54, wherein said second wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 56. The ink supply system of claim 52, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 57. The ink supply system of claim 46, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said elongated member.
- 58. The ink supply system of claim 57, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 59. The ink supply system of claim 57, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface.
- 60. The ink supply system of claim 59, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 61. The ink supply system of claim 59, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 62. The ink supply system of claim 57, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 63. A dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member formed of a porous material mounted within said ink-supply tank;
- a printing mechanism for applying ink from said ink absorbing member to effect dot matrix printing; and
- said ink-supply tank being formed with an ink supply port positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink through said first wall for delivery to said printing mechanism, said ink supply port being positioned on said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall said ink supply port being free of porous material at least in the region thereof facing said ink absorbing member.
- 64. The dot matrix printer of claim 63, said ink supply port occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 65. The dot matrix printer of claim 63, wherein at least the portion of said ink supply port adjacent said ink absorbing member is essentially free of said porous material.
- 66. The dot matrix printer of claim 64, said ink supply port occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 67. The dot matrix printer of claim 63, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 68. The dot matrix printer of claim 67, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 69. The dot matrix printer of claim 67, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 70. The dot matrix printer of claim 63, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 71. The dot matrix printer of claim 70, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 72. The dot matrix printer of claim 70, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 73. The dot matrix printer of claim 72, wherein said first wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 74. The dot matrix printer of claim 70, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material closest to said ink supply port being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 75. The dot matrix printer of claim 63, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing said ink supply port, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said ink supply port.
- 76. The dot matrix printer of claim 75, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 77. The dot matrix printer of claim 75, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface.
- 78. The dot matrix printer of claim 77, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 79. The dot matrix printer of claim 77, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 80. The dot matrix printer of claim 75, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 81. An ink-supply tank for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member mounted within said ink-supply tank; and
- said ink-supply tank being formed with an ink supply port positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink from said ink-supply tank through said first wall for delivery to a dot matrix printer, said ink supply port being positioned at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall said ink supply port being free of porous material at least in the region thereof facing said ink absorbing member.
- 82. The ink-supply tank of claim 81, wherein said at least the portion of said ink supply port adjacent said ink absorbing material is free of ink absorbing material.
- 83. The ink-supply tank of claim 82, said ink supply port occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 84. The ink-supply tank of claim 83, said ink supply port occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 85. The ink-supply tank of claim 82, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 86. The ink-supply tank of claim 85, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 87. The ink-supply tank of claim 85, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 88. The ink-supply tank of claim 82, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 89. The ink-supply tank of claim 88, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 90. The ink-supply tank of claim 88, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink supply tank was designed to hold.
- 91. The ink-supply tank of claim 90, wherein said second wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 92. The ink-supply tank of claim 88, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 93. The ink-supply tank of claim 82, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said elongated member.
- 94. The ink-supply tank of claim 93, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 95. The ink-supply tank of claim 93, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said wall surface.
- 96. The ink-supply tank of claim 95, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in party apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 97. The ink-supply tank of claim 93, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 98. The ink-supply tank of claim 95, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and the inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 99. A method for supplying ink for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- providing an ink supply tank formed with a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- providing an ink absorbing member mounted within said ink-supply tank;
- providing an ink supply port in said first wall of said ink-supply tank positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member for delivery to said dot matrix printer and further positioned between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall said ink supply port being free of porous material at least in the region thereof facing said ink absorbing member; and
- withdrawing said ink from said ink-supply tank through said opening in and passage along said elongated member for delivery to the dot matrix printer.
- 100. The method of claim 99, wherein said ink supply port occupies substantially less than the entire area of the first wall of the ink supply tank.
- 101. The method of claim 99, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided as a unitary piece of porous material.
- 102. The method of claim 101, wherein said unitary piece of porous material is provided so as to substantially fill the ink-supply tank.
- 103. The method of claim 102, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 104. The method of claim 99, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided in the form of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 105. The method of claim 104, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 106. The method of claim 104, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 107. The method of claim 104, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material closest to said ink supply port being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 108. The method of claim 99, including the further step of applying ink to said ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 109. An ink supply system for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall and a second wall extending substantially in a perpendicular direction to said first wall, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall;
- an ink absorbing member formed of a porous material mounted within said ink-supply tank;
- a printing mechanism for applying ink from said ink absorbing member to effect dot matrix printing; and
- said ink-supply tank being formed with an ink supply port positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink through said first wall for delivery to said printing mechanism, said ink supply port being positioned on said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall said ink supply port being free of porous material at least in the region thereof facing said ink absorbing member.
- 110. The ink supply system of claim 109, said ink supply port occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 111. The ink supply system of claim 109, wherein at least the portion of said ink supply port adjacent said ink absorbing member is essentially free of said porous material.
- 112. The ink supply system of claim 110, said ink supply port occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 113. The ink supply system of claim 109, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 114. The ink supply system of claim 113, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 115. The ink supply system of claim 113, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 116. The ink supply system of claim 109, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 117. The ink supply system of claim 116, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 118. The ink supply system of claim 116, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 119. The ink supply system of claim 118, wherein said second wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 120. The ink supply system of claim 116, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material closest to said ink supply port being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 121. The ink supply system of claim 109, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing said ink supply port, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said ink supply port.
- 122. The ink supply system of claim 121, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 123. The ink supply system of claim 121, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface.
- 124. The ink supply system of claim 123, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 125. The ink supply system of claim 123, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 126. The ink supply system of claim 121, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 127. The dot matrix printer of claim 1, wherein said distal end of said elongated member engages said ink absorbing member.
- 128. The ink tank of claim 18, wherein said distal end of said elongated member engages said ink absorbing member.
- 129. The method of claim 35, wherein said distal end of said elongated member engages said ink absorbing member.
- 130. The ink supply system of claim 1, wherein said distal end of said elongated member engages said ink absorbing member.
- 131. A dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank;
- an ink absorbing member mounted within the ink-supply tank;
- a printing mechanism for applying ink from said ink absorbing member to effect dot matrix printing; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink through said first wall for delivery to said printing mechanism, said ink receiving and transmitting member including an elongated member, said elongated member extending into said ink-supply tank from said first side of said first wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at least a distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening, at least a region of said elongated member and of said passage extending therealong adjacent said ink absorbing member being essentially free of porous material.
- 132. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 133. The dot matrix printer of claim 132, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 134. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 135. The dot matrix printer of claim 134, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 136. The dot matrix printer of claim 134, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 137. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 138. The dot matrix printer of claim 137, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 139. The dot matrix printer of claim 137, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 140. The dot matrix printer of claim 137, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 141. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a second wall extending substantially in the same direction as said elongated member extends into said ink-supply tank, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall, said elongated member extending from said first side of said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall.
- 142. The dot matrix printer of claim 141, wherein said first wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 143. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said elongated member.
- 144. The dot matrix printer of claim 143, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 145. The dot matrix printer of claim 143, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said wall surface.
- 146. The dot matrix printer of claim 145, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 147. The dot matrix printer of claim 145, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and the inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 148. The dot matrix printer of claim 143, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 149. An ink-supply system for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- an ink-supply tank having a first wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank;
- an ink absorbing member mounted within the ink-supply tank; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink from said ink-supply tank through said wall for delivery to a dot matrix printer, said ink receiving and transmitting member including an elongated member, said elongated member extending into said ink-supply tank from said first side of said first wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at at least a distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening, at least a region of said elongated member and of said passage extending therealong adjacent said ink absorbing member being essentially free of porous material.
- 150. The ink-supply system of claim 149, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 151. The ink-supply system of claim 150, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 152. The ink-supply system of claim 149, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.
- 153. The ink-supply system of claim 152, wherein said unitary piece of porous material substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 154. The ink-supply system of claim 152, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 155. The ink-supply system of claim 149, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 156. The ink-supply system of claim 155, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 157. The ink-supply system of claim 155, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink supply tank was designed to hold.
- 158. The ink-supply system of claim 157, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a second wall extending substantially in the same direction as said elongated member extends into said ink-supply tank, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall, said elongated member extending from said first side of said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall.
- 159. The ink-supply system of claim 158, wherein said first wall of said ink-supply tank essentially defines one side of said ink-supply tank.
- 160. The ink-supply system of claim 155, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 161. The ink-supply system of claim 149, wherein said ink-supply tank includes a further wall facing the end of said elongated member, said ink absorbing member being compressingly contained in the space intermediate said further wall and said ink elongated member.
- 162. The ink-supply system of claim 161, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover means bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member.
- 163. The ink-supply system of claim 161, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink in said ink-supply tank when said ink-supply tank is filled to the designed capacity of the ink-supply tank, said ink-supply tank including an inner wall surface having projections to provide a space between said ink absorbing member and said wall surface.
- 164. The ink-supply system of claim 163, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in party apply a compressive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 165. The ink-supply system of claim 161, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 166. The ink-supply system of claim 163, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and the inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 167. A method for supplying ink for a dot matrix printer comprising:
- providing an ink absorbing member mounted within an ink-supply tank;
- providing an elongated member extending into said ink-supply tank so that the distal end of the elongated member engages the ink absorbing member;
- forming the elongated member with an opening at at least a distal end thereof, with a passage which extends longitudinally along said elongated member from said opening for delivery to a dot matrix printer and with a region of said elongated member and of said passage extending therealong adjacent the ink absorbing member essentially free of porous material; and
- withdrawing said ink from said ink-supply tank through said opening in and passage along said elongated member for delivery to the dot matrix printer.
- 168. The method of claim 167, wherein said elongated member is provided so that said extending elongated member occupies substantially less than the entire area of the wall of the ink absorbing member from which it extends.
- 169. The method of claim 167, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided as a unitary piece of porous material.
- 170. The method of claim 169, wherein said unitary piece of porous material is provided so as to substantially fill the ink-supply tank.
- 171. The method of claim 169, wherein said unitary piece of porous material carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 172. The method of claim 167, wherein said ink absorbing member is provided in the form of at least two pieces of porous material, each of said pieces of porous material abutting another of said pieces of porous material along respective surfaces thereof for the transfer of ink therebetween.
- 173. The method of claim 172, wherein said ink absorbing member substantially fills the ink-supply tank.
- 174. The method of claim 172, wherein said ink absorbing member carries substantially all of the ink that said ink-supply tank was designed to hold.
- 175. The method of claim 172, wherein at least two of said pieces of porous material are of different average pore size, the average pore size of the piece of porous material engaged by said elongated member being of the smallest of the average pore sizes of the pieces of porous material.
- 176. The method of claim 167, and including the step of providing a first wall in said ink-supply tank from which said elongated member extends and a second wall in said ink-supply tank extending substantially in the same direction as said elongated member projects into said ink-supply tank, said first wall having a length as viewed in a direction therealong extending from said second wall, said elongated member projecting from said first wall at a position between the midpoint of said length of said first wall and said second wall.
- 177. The method of claim 167, including the further step of applying ink to said ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 178. The method of claim 167, including the further step of locally compressing said ink absorbing member at least in the region thereof facing said opening by the engagement of said ink absorbing member by at least said distal end of said elongated member.
- 179. The dot matrix printer of claim 131, said ink supply tank further comprising a second wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank, at least one positioning member being formed on said second side of said second wall.
- 180. The dot matrix printer of claim 179, wherein said positioning member positions said ink supply tank with respect to said dot matrix printer when said ink supply tank is mounted on said dot matrix printer.
- 181. The dot matrix printer of claim 180, wherein said positioning member comprises at least one protrusion.
- 182. The dot matrix printer of claim 179, wherein said positioning member comprises at least one protrusion.
- 183. The ink-supply system of claim 149, said ink supply tank further comprising a second wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank, at least one positioning member being formed on said second side of said second wall.
- 184. The ink-supply system of claim 183, wherein said positioning member positions said ink supply tank with respect to said dot matrix printer when said ink supply tank is mounted on said dot matrix printer.
- 185. The ink-supply system of claim 184, wherein said positioning member comprises at least one protrusion.
- 186. The ink-supply system of claim 183, wherein said positioning member comprises at least one protrusion.
- 187. The method of claim 167, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a second wall in said ink supply tank having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank; and
- forming at least one positioning member on said second side of said second wall.
- 188. The method of claim 187, further comprising the step of positioning said ink supply tank with respect to said dot matrix printer when said ink supply tank is mounted on said dot matrix printer through the use of said positioning member.
- 189. The method of claim 188, further comprising the step of forming said positioning member of at least one protrusion.
- 190. The method of claim 187, further comprising the step of forming said positioning member of at least one protrusion.
- 191. An ink-supply tank comprising:
- a first wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank;
- an ink absorbing member mounted within the ink supply tank; and
- an ink receiving and transmitting member positioned to receive ink from said ink absorbing member and constructed to transmit ink through said first wall, said ink receiving and transmitting member including an elongated member, said elongated member extending into said ink-supply tank from said first side of said first wall, said elongated member being formed with an opening at least the distal end thereof and with a passage extending longitudinally therealong from said opening along the length of said elongated member engaging a portion of said ink absorbing member at least in the region of said ink absorbing member facing said opening, at least a region of said elongated member and of said passage extending therealong adjacent said ink absorbing member being essentially free of porous material.
- 192. The ink-supply tank of claim 191, said elongated member occupying substantially less than the entire area of said first wall.
- 193. The ink-supply tank of claim 192, said elongated member occupying only a minor portion of the entire area of said first wall.
- 194. The ink-supply tank of claim 191, wherein said ink absorbing member is formed of a unitary piece of porous material.

The ink-supply tank of claim 205, wherein said further wall of said ink-supply tank facing said elongated member is a cover bearing on said ink absorbing member when assembled to said ink-supply tank to at least in part apply a comprehensive force to effect compression of said ink absorbing member, at least a portion of said projections extending from the inner wall surface of said cover.
- 207. The ink-supply tank of claim 205, and including means for providing ambient air to the space between said ink absorbing member and the inner wall surface of said ink-supply tank.
- 208. The ink-supply tank of claim 203, and including ink impregnated in the ink absorbing member under a pressure sufficiently low to substantially eliminate air bubbles in the ink absorbing member.
- 209. The ink-supply tank of claim 191, said ink supply tank further comprising a second wall having a first side facing the interior of said tank and a second side facing the exterior of said tank, at least one positioning member being formed on said second side of said second wall.
- 210. The ink-supply tank of claim 209, wherein said positioning member positions said ink supply tank with respect to said dot matrix printer when said ink supply tank is mounted on said dot matrix printer.
