Claims
- 1. A printer comprising:
- a printing apparatus;
- an ink supply system mounted in said printing apparatus; and
- an ink supply tank mounted in said printing apparatus, said ink supply tank operatively engaging with said printing apparatus through said ink supply system, said ink supply tank dimensioned to accommodate ink therein to be delivered to said ink supply system, said ink supply tank comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, the total height of said ink absorbing member before insertion in said tank housing being substantially larger than the height of said interior space of said tank housing, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 2. A printer comprising:
- a printing apparatus;
- an ink supply system mounted in said printing apparatus; and
- an ink supply tank mounted in said printing apparatus, said ink supply tank operatively engaging with said printing apparatus through said ink supply system, said ink supply tank dimensioned to accommodate ink therein to be delivered to said ink supply system, said ink supply tank comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, said ink absorbing member being dimensioned to have a volume before insertion in said tank housing which is substantially greater than the volume of said interior space of said tank housing.
- 3. The printer of claim 2, wherein the total height of said ink absorbing member is substantially larger than the height of said interior space of said tank housing, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 4. The printer of claim 2, wherein said ink absorbing member comprises a first porous member having a larger pore size and a second porous member having a smaller pore size, said first porous member being stacked on said second porous member, said second porous member being positioned adjacent said ink supply delivery port.
- 5. The printer of claim 4, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said first porous member having the larger pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 6. The printer of claim 5, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 7. The printer of claim 4, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said second porous member having the smaller pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is housed in said tank housing.
- 8. The printer of claim 4, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said tank housing having a bottom wall in which said ink delivery port opening is formed, said projection projecting from said bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 9. The printer of claim 4, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 10. The printer of claim 2, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing facing said ink delivery port opening to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 11. The printer of claim 10, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 12. The printer of claim 2, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said projection projecting from a bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 13. The printer of claim 2, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 14. The printer of claim 2, wherein said tank housing is formed with an air communication passage therethrough, and with a projection in an inner wall surface thereof defining a space between said inner wall surface and said ink absorbing member in fluid communication with ambient air through said air communication passage.
- 15. The printer of claim 14, wherein said tank housing includes a top wall facing said opening, said projection extending from said top wall.
- 16. The printer of claim 15, wherein said projection engages said ink absorbing member when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing.
- 17. The printer of claim 16, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 18. The printer of claim 15, wherein said projection compresses said ink absorbing member toward said ink supply delivery port opening.
- 19. The printer of claim 2, wherein said tank housing includes a bottom wall in which said opening is formed, and further comprising a plurality of slots formed on the interior surface of said bottom wall of said tank housing, said slots communicating with said ink supply delivery port for guiding ink contained in said tank housing to said ink supply delivery port.
- 20. The printer of claim 2, wherein black ink is contained in said tank housing.
- 21. The printer of claim 2, wherein ink of a color other than black is contained in said tank housing.
- 22. The printer of claim 2, wherein said tank housing is formed with a plurality of ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, each of said ink supply sections carrying ink of a different color.
- 23. The printer of claim 2, wherein said tank housing is formed with three separate ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, one of said three separate ink supply sections carrying ink of each of yellow, cyan or magenta, respectively.
- 24. An ink supply tank for a printer, comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, the total height of said ink absorbing member before insertion in said tank housing being substantially larger than the height of said interior space of said tank housing, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 25. An ink supply tank for a printer, comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, said ink absorbing member being dimensioned to have a volume before insertion in said tank housing which is substantially greater than the volume of said interior space of said tank housing.
- 26. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein the total height of said ink absorbing member is substantially higher than that of said tank housing, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 27. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said ink absorbing member comprises a first porous member having a larger pore size and a second porous member having a smaller pore size, said first porous member being stacked on said second porous member, said second porous member being positioned adjacent said ink supply delivery port.
- 28. The ink supply tank of claim 27, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said first porous member having the larger pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 29. The ink supply tank of claim 28, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 30. The ink supply tank of claim 27, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said tank housing having a bottom wall in which said ink delivery port opening is formed, said projection projecting from said bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 31. The ink supply tank of claim 30, wherein said second porous member having the smaller pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing.
- 32. The ink supply tank of claim 27, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 33. The ink supply tank of claim 25, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing facing said ink delivery port opening to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 34. The ink supply tank of claim 33, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 35. The ink supply tank of claim 25, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said projection projecting from a bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 36. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 37. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said tank housing is formed with an air communication passage therethrough, and with a projection in an inner wall surface thereof defining a space between said inner wall surface and said ink absorbing member in fluid communication with ambient air through said air communication passage.
- 38. The ink supply tank of claim 37, wherein said tank housing includes a top wall facing said opening, said projection extending from said top wall.
- 39. The ink supply tank of claim 37, wherein said projection engages said ink absorbing member when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing.
- 40. The ink supply tank of claim 39, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 41. The ink supply tank of claim 38, wherein said projection compresses said ink absorbing member toward said ink supply delivery port opening.
- 42. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said tank housing includes a bottom wall in which said opening is formed, and further comprising a plurality of slots formed on the interior surface of said bottom wall of said tank housing, said slots communicating with said ink supply delivery port for guiding ink contained in said tank housing to said ink supply delivery port.
- 43. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein black ink is contained in said tank housing.
- 44. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein ink of a color other than black is contained in said tank housing.
- 45. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said tank housing is formed with a plurality of ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, and each of said ink supply sections carrying ink of a different color.
- 46. The ink supply tank of claim 25, wherein said tank housing is formed with three separate ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, one of said three separate ink supply sections carrying ink of each of yellow, cyan or magenta, respectively.
- 47. An ink supply system for a printer, comprising:
- an ink supply tank; and
- an ink delivery system positioned to receive ink from said ink supply tank and to deliver said ink to said primer;
- said ink supply tank comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, the total height of said ink absorbing member before insertion in said tank housing being substantially larger than the height of said interior space of said tank housing, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 48. An ink supply system for a printer, comprising:
- an ink supply tank; and
- an ink delivery system positioned to receive ink from said ink supply tank and to deliver said ink to said printer;
- said ink supply tank comprising:
- a tank housing having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- an ink supply delivery port formed in an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said ink supply delivery port having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space to the exterior of said tank housing; and
- an ink absorbing member comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, one of said porous portions having a region facing said opening of said ink supply delivery port, said ink absorbing member being dimensioned to have a volume before insertion in said tank housing which is substantially greater than the volume of said interior space of said tank housing.
- 49. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein the total height of said ink absorbing member is substantially larger than that of said interior space of said ink supply tank, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed.
- 50. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein said ink absorbing member comprises a first porous member having a larger pore size and a second porous member having a smaller pore size, said first porous member being stacked on said second porous member, said second porous member being positioned adjacent said ink supply delivery port.
- 51. The ink supply system of claim 50, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said first porous member having the larger pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said tank housing to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 52. The ink supply system of claim 51, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 53. The ink supply system of claim 50, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said tank housing having a bottom wall in which said ink delivery port opening is formed, said projection projecting from said bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 54. The ink supply system of claim 53, wherein said second porous member having the smaller pore size being engaged by said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said ink supply tank.
- 55. The ink supply system of claim 50, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 56. The ink supply system of claim 48, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing facing said ink delivery port opening to at least in part force said ink absorbing member toward said ink delivery port opening.
- 57. The ink supply system of claim 56, wherein said tank housing has a top wall facing said ink delivery port opening, said projection projecting from said top wall of said tank housing.
- 58. The ink supply system of claim 48, and including a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said tank housing, said projection projecting from a bottom wall of said tank housing.
- 59. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 60. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein said tank housing is formed with an air communication passage therethrough, and with a projection in an inner wall surface thereof defining a space between said inner wall surface and said ink absorbing member in fluid communication with ambient air through said air communication passage.
- 61. The ink supply system of claim 56, wherein said tank housing includes a top wall facing said opening, said projection extending from said top wall.
- 62. The ink supply system of claim 60, wherein said projection engages said ink absorbing member when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said ink supply tank.
- 63. The ink supply system of claim 62, wherein said ink supply delivery port comprises a portion projecting from the inner wall surface of said tank housing and including a passage for ink extending along its length and communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller pore size.
- 64. The ink supply system of claim 63, wherein said projection compresses said ink absorbing member toward said ink supply delivery port opening.
- 65. The ink supply system of claim 64, wherein said tank housing includes a bottom wall in which said opening is formed, and further comprising a plurality of slots formed on the interior surface of said bottom wall of said tank housing, said slots communicating with said ink supply delivery port for guiding ink contained in said tank housing to said ink supply delivery port.
- 66. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein black ink is contained in said ink supply tank is black.
- 67. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein ink of a color other than black is contained in said ink supply tank.
- 68. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein said tank housing is formed with a plurality of ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections-having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, each of said ink supply sections carrying ink of a different color.
- 69. The ink supply system of claim 48, wherein said tank housing is formed with three separate ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member, one of said three separate ink supply sections carrying ink of each of yellow, cyan or magenta, respectively.
- 70. A method for supplying ink to a printer, comprising:
- providing an ink supply tank having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- forming a projection on an inner wall surface of said ink supply tank;
- forming an ink supply delivery port in said ink supply tank having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space of ink supply tank to the exterior thereof;
- providing an ink absorbing member of a porous material mounted in the interior space of said ink supply tank comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, with one of said porous portions having a region facing said ink supply delivery port, the total height of said ink absorbing member before insertion in said tank housing being substantially larger than the height of said interior space of said ink supply tank, as viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface in which said opening is formed; and
- withdrawing ink from said interior space of said ink supply tank through said opening in said ink supply delivery port of said ink supply tank.
- 71. A method for supplying ink to a printer, comprising:
- providing an ink supply tank having an interior space defined at least in part from inner wall surfaces;
- forming a projection on an inner wall surface of said ink supply tank;
- forming an ink supply delivery port in said ink supply tank having an opening for the passage of ink from said interior space of ink supply tank to the exterior of said tank housing;
- providing an ink absorbing member of a porous material mounted in the interior space of said ink supply tank comprising at least two contiguous porous portions of different pore size, with one of said porous portions having a region facing said ink supply delivery port, said ink absorbing member being dimensioned to have a volume before mounting into said ink supply tank which is substantially greater than the volume of said interior space of said ink supply tank; and
- withdrawing ink from said interior space of said ink supply tank through said opening in said ink supply delivery port of said ink supply tank.
- 72. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of stacking a first porous member having a larger pore size on a second porous member having a smaller pore size to form said ink absorbing member.
- 73. The method of claim 72, further comprising the step of forming a projection extending from an inner wall surface of said ink supply tank which engages said first porous member when said ink absorbing member is mounted into said ink supply tank.
- 74. The method of claim 72, wherein said ink delivery port is formed on a bottom wall of said ink supply tank, further comprising the step of forming a projection extending from the bottom wall of said ink supply tank engaging said second porous member when said ink absorbing member is mounted into said ink supply tank.
- 75. The method of claim 73, further comprising the step of compressing both said first and second porous members together with said projection when said ink absorbing member is mounted in said ink supply tank.
- 76. The method of claim 73, further comprising the step of forming said projection on a top wall of said ink supply tank, said projection facing down into said ink supply tank.
- 77. The method of claim 76, further comprising the step of providing said ink supply tank with an air communication hole formed therein and a projection on an inner wall surface thereof defining a space between said ink absorbing member and said inner wall surface in fluid communication with ambient air through said air communication hole.
- 78. The method of claim 72, further comprising the step of forming a projection on a bottom wall of the ink supply tank with said projection facing up into said ink supply tank.
- 79. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of forming said ink supply port with a projecting portion extending from the inner wall surface of said ink supply tank and including a passage extending along its length communicating with said opening, said projecting portion engaging and compressing said porous member having the smaller size.
- 80. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of providing black ink in said interior space of said ink supply tank.
- 81. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of providing ink other than black in said interior space of said ink supply tank.
- 82. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of forming said ink supply tank is with a plurality of ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member.
- 83. The method of claim 82, further comprising the step of providing each of said interior spaces of said ink supply sections with ink of a different color.
- 84. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of forming said ink supply tank with three separate ink supply sections, each of said ink supply sections having a respective interior space, ink supply delivery port and ink absorbing member.
- 85. The method of claim 84, further comprising the step of providing each of said three separate interior spaces of said ink supply sections with ink of one of yellow, cyan and magenta, respectively.
- 86. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of guiding the ink to said ink supply delivery port by a plurality of slots formed on a bottom wall of said ink supply tank which are in communication with said ink supply delivery port.
- 87. The method of claim 71, further comprising the step of providing said ink absorbing member with a height that is substantially higher than that of said tank housing, when viewed in the direction faced by the interior wall surface on which said opening is formed.
