Claims
- 1. An electrolyte for an electrochemical cell comprising: an anhydrous gel-polymer composed of a three-dimensional inorganic metal oxide network encapsulating a liquid electrolyte solution containing a salt and an organic solvent.
- 2. An electrolyte according to claim 1, wherein the inorganic network is composed of an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, silicon, titanium vanadium, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten.
- 3. An electrolyte according to claim 1, wherein the inorganic network is composed of silica.
- 4. An electrolyte according to claim 1, wherein the salt is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt which is stable in the presence of water.
- 5. An electrolyte according to claim 4, wherein the salt is an organic lithium salt selected from the group consisting of lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide, lithium bis[5-fluoro-2-olato-1-benzenesulfonato(2-)-O,O]borate(1-), lithium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, lithium tris-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-methide, and lithium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)methane.
- 6. An electrolyte according to claim 4, wherein the salt is lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide.
- 7. An electrolyte according to claim 1, wherein the organic carbonate is selected from the group consisting of ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, diethylcarbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, methyl propylcarbonate and dimethylether and mixtures thereof.
- 8. An electrochemical cell comprising an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte disposed therebetween, said electrolyte comprising an anhydrous gel-polymer composed of a three-dimensional inorganic metal oxide network encapsulating a liquid electrolyte solution.
- 9. An electrochemical cell according to claim 8, wherein the anode is composed of carbon.
- 10. An electrochemical cell according to claim 8, wherein the cathode is composed of a lithiated transition metal oxide.
- 11. An electrochemical cell according to claim 10, wherein the cathode is composed of LiCoO2.
- 12. An electrochemical cell according to claim 8, wherein the inorganic network is composed of silica.
- 13. An electrochemical cell according to claim 8, wherein the salt is an organic lithium salt selected from the group consisting of lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide, lithium bis[5-fluoro-2-olato-1-benzenesulfonato(2-)-O,O]borate(1-), lithium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, lithium tris-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-methide, and lithium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)methane.
- 14. An electrochemical cell according to claim 8, wherein the salt is lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide
- 15. A method of fabricating an electrolytic cell including an anode and a cathode comprising:
preparing an active metal ion conducting liquid electrolyte containing a salt which is stable in the presence of water and a solvent; mixing said liquid electrolyte in an anhydrous solution containing a metal halide and an alcohol to form a liquid percursor; adding said liquid precursor to said cell between said anode and said cathode; and allowing said liquid percursor to solidify in situ forming a gel-polymer electrolyte between said anode and said cathode.
- 16. A method of fabricating an electrochemical cell according to claim 15, wherein the metal halide is silicon tetrachloride.
- 17. A method of fabricating an electrochemical cell according to claim 16, wherein the alcohol is tert-butyl alcohol.
- 18. A method of fabricating an electrochemical cell according to claim 17, wherein the anode is selected from the group consisting of carbon, lithium titanium oxide, tin oxide, tin and germanium oxide and the cathode is selected from the group consisting of LiCoO2, LiNiO2, LiNi0.82Co0.18O2 and LiMn2O4.
- 19. A method of fabricating an electrochemical cell according to claim 17, wherein the salt is an organic lithium salt selected from the group consisting of:
lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide, lithium bis[5-fluoro-2-olato-1-benzenesulfonato(2-)-O,O]borate(1-), lithium bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, lithium tris-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-methide, and lithium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)methane.
- 20. A method of fabricating an electrochemical cell according to claim 19, wherein the solvent is selected from the group consisting of ethylene carbonate, dimethylcarbonate and mixtures thereof.
