Claims
- 1. Inorganic papers, fibers, films, and boards containing crystals consisting essentially of a lithium and/or sodium water-swelling mica selected from the group of fluorhectorite, hydroxyl hectorite, boron fluorphlogopite, hydroxyl boron phlogopite, and solid solutions among those and between those and other structurally-compatible species selected from the group of talc, fluortalc, polylithionite, fluorpolylithionite, phlogopite, and fluorphlogopite, at least a substantial proportion of said crystals exhibiting a morphology of a continuum of flakes, rectangular-like strips, and interwoven ribbons in parallel or sub-parallel zones or sheaths with said strips and ribbons being about 0.5-10 microns long, about 500 A-5000 A wide, and less than about 100 A thick, and said flakes being irregularly shaped with diameters between about 0.5-10 microns and cross sections of less than about 100 A.
- 2. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 1 wherein said strips and/or ribbon-like crystals are grouped together to form composite or patchwork structures.
- 3. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 1 wherein said water-swelling mica has a composition consisting essentially, expressed in weight percent on the oxide basis, of 0-12% Li.sub.2 O, 0-10% Na.sub.2 O, 0.5-14% Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O, 10-38% MgO, 0-30% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 35-70% SiO.sub.2, 0-15% F, 0-15% OH, and 4-15% F+OH.
- 4. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 1 wherein said crystals constitute at least 25% by volume thereof and at least 10% of said crystals exhibit a morphology of a continuum of flakes, rectangular-like strips, and interwoven ribbons in parallel or sub-parallel zones or sheaths.
- 5. Inorganic papers, films, and boards according to claim 1 also containing inert fillers up to an amount of about 75% by volume.
- 6. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 5 wherein said fillers are selected from the group of clays, talc, glass fibers, alkali barium silicate particles, barium silicate particles, synthetic silica platelets, gypsum, and natural fibers.
- 7. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 4 containing crystals consisting essentially of basically a lithium and/or sodium water-swelling trisilicic mica selected from the group of boron fluorphlogopite, hydroxyl boron phlogopite, and solid solutions between those and between those and other structurally-compatible species selected from the group of fluorhectorite, hydroxyl hectorite, talc, fluortalc, phlogopite, and fluorphlogopite, consisting essentially, expressed in weight percent on the oxide basis, of 0-6% Li.sub.2 O, 0-9% Na.sub.2 O, 0.5-10% Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O, 20-38% MgO, 2-10% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 4-12% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 +B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 35-56% SiO.sub.2, 0-12% F, 0-12% OH, and 4-12% F+OH.
- 8. Inorganic papers, fibers, films and boards containing crystals consisting essentially of an exchanged lithium and/or sodium water-swelling mica selected from the group of fluorhectorite, hydroxyl hectorite, boron fluorphlogopite, hydroxyl boron phlogopite, and solid solutions among those and between those and other structurally-compatible species selected from the group of talc, fluortalc, polylithionite, fluorpolylithionite, phlogopite, and fluorphlogopite, at least a substantial proportion of said crystals exhibiting a morphology of a continuum of flakes, rectangular-like strips, and interwoven ribbons in parallel or sub-parallel zones or sheaths with said strips and ribbons being about 0.5-10 microns long, about 500 A-5000 A wide, and less than about 100 A thick, and said flakes being irregularly shaped with diameters between about 0.5-10 microns and cross sections of less than about 100 A.
- 9. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 8 wherein said strip and/or ribbon-like crystals are grouped together to form composite or patchwork structures.
- 10. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 8 wherein said exchanged lithium and/or sodium water-swelling mica is a potassium mica which has a composition consisting essentially, expressed in weight percent on the oxide basis of about 3-17% K.sub.2 O, 0-8% Li.sub.2 O, 0-5% Na.sub.2 O, 0.5-10% Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O, 10-38% MgO, 0-30% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 35-70% SiO.sub.2, 0-15% F, 0-15% OH, and 4-15% F+OH.
- 11. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 8 wherein said crystals constitute at least 25% by volume thereof and at least 10% of said crystals exhibit a morphology of a continuum of flakes, rectangular-like strips, and interwoven ribbons in parallel or sub-parallel zones or sheaths.
- 12. Inorganic papers, films, and boards according to claim 8 also containing inert fillers up to an amount of about 75% by volume.
- 13. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 12 wherein said fillers are selected from the group of clays, talc, glass fibers, alkali barium silicate particles, barium silicate particles, synthetic silica platelets, gypsum, and natural fibers.
- 14. Inorganic papers, films, fibers, and boards according to claim 12 containing crystals consisting essentially of an exchanged lithium and/or sodium water-swelling trisilicic mica selected from the group of boron fluorphlogopite, hydroxyl boron phlogopite, and solid solutions between those and between those and other structurally-compatible species selected from the group of fluorhectorite, hydroxyl hectorite, talc, fluortalc, phlogopite, and fluorphlogopite wherein said exchanged lithium and/or sodium water-swelling trisilicic mica is a potassium mica which has a composition consisting essentially, expressed in weight percent on the oxide basis, of about 3-16% K.sub.2 O, 0-4% Li.sub.2 O, 0-5% Na.sub.2 O, 0.5-8% Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O, 20-38% MgO, 2-10% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 4-12% B.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 35-56% SiO.sub.2, 0-12% F, 0-12% OH, and 4-12% F+OH.
- 15. Inorganic coatings containing crystals consisting essentially of a hydroxyl hectorite and/or a solid solution of a hydroxyl hectorite and a fluorhectorite exhibiting a morphology of predominantly either rectangular-like strips and interwoven ribbons or of flakes and platelets, said strips and ribbons being about 0.5-10 microns long about 500 A-5000 A wide, and less than about 100 A thick, and said flakes and platelets being irregularly shaped with diameters between about 0.5-10 microns and cross sections of less than about 100 A.
