Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR6## and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, wherein: A is CH.sub.2 ;
- each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is independently hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, allyloxy, propargyloxy, benzyloxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)thio, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)sulfinyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)sulfonyl, hydroxy, halo, cyano, nitro, mono- or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino, trifluoromethyl, or Z-Q-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, wherein Q is oxygen, sulfur, sulfinyl, sulfonyl, or a bond, and Z is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted with halo, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, hydroxy, nitro, amino, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)thio, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)sulfinyl, or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)sulfonyl;
- and R.sub.3 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, or halo;
- with the proviso that R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 may not all be hydrogen at the same time.
- 2. The compounds of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is methoxy.
- 3. The compounds of claim 2 wherein R.sub.1 is at the 2'-position.
- 4. The compounds of claim 3 wherein R.sub.2 is methylsulfinyl.
- 5. The compounds of claim 3 wherein R.sub.2 is methoxy.
- 6. The compounds of claim 3 wherein R.sub.2 is methylmercapto.
- 7. The compounds of claim 3 wherein R.sub.2 is methylsulfonyl.
- 8. The compound of claim 5 which is 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
- 9. A method of producing a positive inotropic effect in a mammal, which comprises administering to such mammal an effective amount of a compound of claim 1.
- 10. A method according to claim 9 wherein R.sub.1 is methoxy at the 2'-position and R.sub.2 is methoxy, methylsulfinyl, or methylsulfonyl at the 4'-position.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the compound is 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
- 12. A pharmaceutical formulation useful for producing a positive inotropic effect in a mammal comprising an effective amount of a compound of claim 1 in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
- 13. The formulation of claim 12 wherein the compound is 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
