Claims
- 1. An improved bar code reader system of the type having:
- (a) a hand-held bar code reader unit including a reader head portion with a frontally directed window means providing optical coupling of said reader unit with a bar code having a complete line of bar code information, said reader head portion having a top side which is upwardly directed during reading of a bar code with vertically disposed bars, and a handle portion extending from said reader head portion providing for hand-held support of said reader unit;
- (b) manually actuatable trigger means for initiating a bar code reading operation;
- said hand-held bar code reader unit being of configuration such that during said bar code reading operation an operator manually grasping said handle portion moves said reader unit by means of said handle portion to place said reader unit in reading relationship with said bar code and to direct said window means towards said bar code information such that said bar code is located in front of said reader unit;
- (d) said reader head portion having a battery powered automatic bar code reader system therein including a light source energizable for producing light energy to be directed outwardly through said window means, and being operable to effectively illuminate said bar code elements simultaneously over a substantial range of distances;
- (e) said battery powered automatic bar code reader system being operable in an automatic bar code reading operation while said reader unit is stationary as a whole, to receive reflected light energy through said window means from said bar code elements simultaneously after said light energy has been directed outwardly through said window means to generator from said reflected light energy a useful bar code signal corresponding to a complete line of bar code information;
- (f) control means responsive to manual actuation of said trigger means to effect a plurality of successive bar code reading cycles during the course of said bar code reading operation until said bar code reading operation is terminated, and being operable to automatically terminate said bar code reading operation upon determining that one of said bar code reading of cycles has resulted in a valid bar code reading; and
- (g) an output cable emanating from said handle portion;
- wherein the improvement comprises:
- said light source being located substantially within said head portion and said control means includes a battery powered programmed decoder located substantially within said handle portion and in proximity to said output cable, said battery powered programmed decoder being programmed to decode said bar code signals indicating complete lines of bar code information generated by said battery powered automatic bar code reader system.
- 2. An improved bar code reader system for reading bar code information as defined in claim 1 and wherein the improvement further includes:
- a driver circuit coupled to said programmed decoder and located substantially in said handle and producing a coded output signal for transmission via said output cable.
- 3. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 1 wherein said handle portion further comprises storage means operatively associated with said programmed decoder as a portion of said control means.
- 4. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 3 further including a microprocessor circuit which comprises said decoder and storage means.
- 5. An improved bar code reader system of the type having:
- (a) a hand-held bar code reader unit including a reader head portion with a frontally directed window means providing optical coupling of said reader unit with a bar code having a complete line of bar code information, said reader head portion having a top side which is upwardly directed during reading of a bar code with vertically disposed bars, and a handle portion extending from said reader head portion providing for hand-held support of said reader unit;
- (b) a manually actuatable trigger means for initiating a bar code reading operation;
- (c) said hand-held bar coder reader unit being of configuration such that during said bar code reading operation an operator manually grasping said handle portion moves said reader unit by means of said handle portion to place said reader unit in reading relationship with said bar code and to direct said window means towards said bar code information such that said bar code is located in front of said reader unit;
- (d) said reader head portion having a battery powered automatic bar code reader system therein including a light source energizable for producing light energy to be directed outwardly through said window means, and being operable to effectively illuminate said bar code elements simultaneously;
- (e) said battery powered automatic bar code reader system being operable in an automatic bar code reading operation while said reader unit is stationary as a whole, to receive reflected light energy through said window means from said bar code elements simultaneously after said light energy has been directed outwardly through said window means to generate from said reflected light energy a useful bar code signal corresponding to a complete line of bar code information;
- (f) control means responsive to manual actuation of said trigger means to effect a plurality of successive bar code reading cycles during the course of said bar code reading operation until said bar code reading operation is terminated, and being operable to automatically terminate said bar code reading operation upon determining that one of said bar code reading cycles has resulted in a valid bar code reading; and
- (g) an output cable emanating from said handle portion;
- wherein the improvement comprises:
- said light source being located substantially within said head portion and said handle portion housing
- i) said manually actuatable trigger means;
- ii) a battery powered decoder as a part of said control means, said battery powered decoder being programmed to decode said bar code signals indicating complete lines of bar code information generated by said battery powered automatic bar code reader system; and
- iii) a driver circuit coupled to said programmed decoder and providing a data signal to said output cable.
- 6. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 5 and wherein the handle portion further includes:
- printed circuit board means supporting said decoder and said driver circuit in spaced electrical relationship to each other.
- 7. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 5 wherein said handle portion extends angularly from said head portion so that the grippable axis is non-linear with respect to the light path emanating from the head portion.
- 8. An improved bar code reader system of the type having:
- (a) a hand-held bar code reader unit including a reader head portion with a frontally directed window means providing optical coupling of said reader unit with a bar code having a complete line of bar code information, said reader head portion having a top side which is upwardly directed during reading of a bar code with vertically disposed bars, and a handle portion extending from said reader head portion providing for hand-held support of said reader unit;
- (b) manually actuatable trigger means for initiating a bar code reading operation;
- (c) said hand-held bar code reader unit being of configuration such that during said bar code reading operation an operator manually grasping said handle portion moves said reader unit by means of said handle portion to place said reader unit in reading relationship with said bar code and to direct said window means towards said bar code information such that said bar code is located in front of said reader unit;
- (d) said reader head portion having a battery powered automatic bar code reader system therein including a light source energizable for producing light energy to be directed outwardly through said window means, and being operable to effectively illuminate said bar code elements simultaneously over a substantial range of distances;
- (e) said battery powered automatic bar code reader system being operable in an automatic bar code reading operation while said reader unit is stationary as a whole, to receive reflected light energy through said window means from said bar code elements simultaneously after said light energy has been directed outwardly through said window means to generate from said reflected light energy a useful bar code signal corresponding to a complete line of bar code information; and
- (f) control means responsive to manual actuation of said trigger means to effect a plurality of successive bar code reading cycles during the course of said bar code reading operation until said bar code reading operation is terminated, and being operable to automatically terminate said bar code reading operation upon determining that one said bar code reading cycles has resulted in a valid bar code reading;
- wherein the improvement comprises:
- said head portion substantially housing the light source and said handle portion substantially housing a microprocessor circuit comprising a battery powered programmed decoder for decoding said bar code signals indicating complete lines of bar code information and program storage means for controlling said decoder within said microprocessor.
- 9. A bar code reader system comprising:
- (a) a hand-held bar code reader unit including a reader head portion with a frontally directed window means providing optical coupling of said reader unit with a bar code having a complete line of bar code element information read simultaneously, said reader head portion having a top side which is upwardly directed during reading of a bar code with vertically disposed bars, and a handle portion extending from said reader head portion providing for hand-held support of said reader unit;
- (b) manually actuatable trigger means for initiating a bar code reading operation;
- (c) said hand-held bar code reader unit being of configuration such that during said bar code reading operation an operator manually grasping said handle portion moves said reader unit by means of said handle portion to place said reader unit in reading relationship with said bar code and to direct said window means towards said bar code information such that said bar code is located in front of said reader unit;
- (d) said reader head portion having a battery powered automatic bar code reader system therein including a light source energizable for producing light energy to be directed outwardly through said window means;
- (e) first circuit means within said head portion for converting the received simultaneous bar code element optical signal into a square pulse train indicative of said received bar code information;
- (f) second circuit means substantially within said handle portion for receiving said squared pulse train, said circuit means comprising:
- i) a decoder circuit for decoding said bar code information,
- ii) storage means, and
- iii) a driver circuit coupled to said decoder circuit for providing a reader system output signal.
- 10. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 9 wherein said handle portion further comprises printed circuit board means for supporting said decoder circuit, said storage means and said driver circuit.
- 11. An improved bar code reader system according to claim 9 wherein said second circuit means comprises a microprocessor circuit encompassing said decoder circuit and storage means.
- 12. An improved bar code reader according to claim 9 wherein said storage means comprises an electrical memory for controlling said decoder circuit.
- 13. An improved bar code reader according to claim 9 wherein said storage means comprises a masked program read only memory.
