- a driver member having means for drivingly engaging said threaded fastener;
- a rotatable shaft supporting said driver member for rotation therewith;
- means engaging said shaft for causing axial rotation thereof;
- means engaging said shaft for measuring the torque on said shaft;
- means engaging said shaft for measuring the thrust on said shaft; and
- means supporting said shaft and engagable with a surface of said member for measuring the angle between the axis of rotation of said shaft and said surface of said member.
- 2. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 1 wherein said shaft rotating means also provides manual means for adjusting the relative axial alignment between said shaft and said threaded fastener.
- 3. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 1, including:
- housing means supporting said shaft for axial rotation;
- said means for measuring the torque on said shaft having a first sensor means engaging said shaft for sensing torque applied thereto by said shaft rotating means; and
- said means for measuring the thrust on said shaft having second sensor means engaging said shaft for sensing thrust being applied axially of said shaft by said shaft rotating means.
- 4. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 3 wherein said first and second sensor means include strain gage load cells.
- 5. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 3, including:
- means connected to said first and second sensor means for providing continuous visual read-out of the thrust and torque applied to said shaft.
- 6. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 3, wherein said angle measuring means includes:
- a base plate having a central opening defined therein through which said drive member extends for engaging a threaded fastener, said base plate being engagable with the surface of said member in which said threaded fastener is being inserted; and
- a plurality of potentiometer means equally angularly spaced in a concentric pattern about said shaft and associated with said shaft and said base plate for sensing the relative angular displacement therebetween.
- 7. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 6, including:
- means connected to said potentiometers for providing continuous visual read-out of signals therefrom for determining the angle between said shaft and the axis of rotation of said threaded fastener.
- 8. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 6, wherein said potentiometer means includes:
- four potentiometers, two each operably disposed in perpendicular planes intersecting along the axis of said shaft and spaced equidistant from the axis of said shaft;
- support means for supporting said potentiometers in said housing means; and
- means operably associated with each said potentiometer and engaging said base plate for causing the output of said potentiometers to vary with a change in angle between the axis of said shaft and said surface.
- 9. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 8 wherein:
- said potentiometers are cylindrical and said operable means includes four rods the upper end portions of each of which extend through respective potentiometers and are resiliently supported in said housing means and the lower end portions of each are pivotally engaged with said base plate to permit angular movement therebetween in any direction.
- 10. An instrumented tool for inserting a threaded fastener or the like into a correspondingly threaded hole defined in a member, comprising:
- a drive member having means for drivingly engaging said threaded fastener;
- a rotatable shaft supporting said driver member for rotation therewith;
- a plurality of potentiometer means equally angularly spaced in a concentric pattern around said shaft; and
- means engageable with a surface of said member in which said hole is defined and operably associated with said potentiometer means, for causing a signal output from said potentiometer means in response to a change in angular relationship between the axis of rotation of said shaft and said surface.
- 11. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 10, wherein said surface engagable means includes:
- a base plate having a central opening defined therein through which said driver member extends for engaging a threaded fastener, said base plate being engagable with said surface of said member in which said threaded fastener is being inserted, adjacent said hole therein.
- 12. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 11, wherein said potentiometer means includes:
- four potentiometers two each operably disposed in perpendicular planes intersecting along the axis of said shaft and spaced equidistant from the axis of said shaft.
- 13. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 12 wherein:
- said potentiometers are cylindrical; and
- said surface engagable means includes four rods the upper end portions of each of which extends through respective potentiometers and the lower end portions of each are pivotally engaged with said base plate to permit angular movement therebetween in any direction.
- 14. An instrumented tool as defined in claim 12, including:
- means connected to said potentiometers for providing continuous visual read out of signals therefrom for determining the angle between said shaft and the axis of rotation of said threaded fastener.
