Claims
- 1. A highly compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber composition consisting essentially of compressed ceramic fiber impregnated with colloidal rigidizer, said fibers being compressed in an amount within the range of from about 60 percent to about 80 percent, basis dry fiber, to a fiber density within the range of from about 20 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot.
- 2. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said fiber is a ceramic fiber of silica with one or more of alumina, zirconia, chromia, or titania.
- 3. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said compressed fiber has a smooth, and compressed, outer weight bearing fiber surface.
- 4. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said fibers comprise one or more of bulk, chopped or milled fibers.
- 5. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said fiber is compressed dry fiber compressed in an amount within the range of from about 65 percent to about 75 percent and has a fiber density within the range of from about 22 to about 40 pounds per cubic foot.
- 6. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said ceramic fiber has surface hardness within the range of from about 10 to about 40 as measured by Schmidt hammer.
- 7. A roll cover comprising the highly compressed ceramic fiber of claim 1.
- 8. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said compressed fiber comprises fiber plus a colloidal rigidizer of one or more of colloidal silica, colloidal alumina or colloidal zirconia together with a colloidal rigidizer additive of one or more of organosilane coupling agent or polymeric agent.
- 9. A highly compressed at least substantially ceramic fiber composition consisting essentially of compressed ceramic fiber impregnated with colloidal rigidizer, said fibers being compressed in an amount within the range of from above about 55 percent to about 85 percent, basis dry fiber, to a fiber density within the range of from about 20 to about 50 pounds per cubic foot.
- 10. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said colloidal rigidizer totally impregnates said highly compressed ceramic fiber.
- 11. The compressed fiber of claim 1, wherein said compressed ceramic fiber impregnated with colloidal rigidizer is free from organic substituents.
