Claims
- 1. An internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber, an intake passage communicating at a valve seat with said combustion chamber, a control valve positioned within said intake passage and moveable between an opened position wherein the flow into said combustion chamber is substantially unrestricted and in a first direction and a closed position wherein the flow into said combustion chamber is restricted to increase the flow velocity and to redirect the flow from said first direction, means for positioning said control valve in a position dependent upon instantaneous operator demand, and override means for positioning and retaining said control valve in one of said positions regardless of instantaneous operator demand upon a sudden change in operator demand.
- 2. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 1 further including means for sensing an engine condition in addition to operator demand and controlling the control valve also in response to that engine condition.
- 3. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 2 wherein the control valve is held in one of its positions when the sensed engine condition is below a predetermined first value and regardless of the operator demand.
- 4. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 3 wherein the control valve is held in the other of its positions when the one condition is above a second predetermined condition and regardless of the operator demand.
- 5. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 2 wherein the sensed engine condition is speed.
- 6. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 5 wherein the control valve is held in a closed position when the engine is below a first predetermined engine speed.
- 7. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 6 wherein the control valve is held in its open position when the speed of the engine is greater than a second predetermined engine speed.
