Claims
- 1. A device for use in an intake path of an internal combustion engine, the device comprising a body portion having an upper surface and a lower surface, the body portion further including at least one passage surface defining at least one passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, wherein the passage surface further defines a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage, each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, and further wherein at least a portion of each channel is at an angle relative to the axis of the passage.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a single channel surface extending from the upper surface to the lower surface, the single surface having a curved portion with a predetermined radius of curvature.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface, the first and second channel surfaces extending from the upper surface of the body portion to the lower surface of the body portion.
- 4. The device of claim 3, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a substantially planar surface.
- 5. The device of claim 3, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and second channel surface is a curved surface.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a plurality of channel surfaces, each of the plurality of channel surfaces extending from the upper surface of the body portion to the lower surface of the body portion.
- 7. The device of claim 6, wherein the plurality of channel surfaces form one of a substantially V-type channel or a substantially rectangular-type channel.
- 8. The device of claim 1, wherein the passage surface defining the passage is a continuous surface from the upper surface of the body portion to the lower surface of the body portion, and further wherein the continuous surface extends from a first opening of the passage at the upper surface of the body portion inward towards the axis of the passage and then further extends away from the axis of the passage towards a second opening of the passage at the lower surface of the body portion.
- 9. The device of claim 8, wherein the continuous surface is closest to the axis of the passage at a position substantially equidistant between the lower surface and upper surface of the body portion.
- 10. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion is an insert body portion sized to be positioned within an opening of another device body.
- 11. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, each passage surface further defining a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage with each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, and further wherein at least a portion of each channel of one passage surface is at an angle that is opposite an angle of at least a portion of each channel of another passage surface.
- 12. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, each passage surface further defining a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage with each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, wherein an axis of at least one passage is parallel to an axis of at least one other passage.
- 13. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, each passage surface further defining a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage with each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, wherein an axis of at least one passage is at an angle relative to a plane orthogonal to one of the upper and lower surfaces.
- 14. The device of claim 13, wherein an angle of at least one axis of a passage is opposite an angle of at least one other axis of a passage.
- 15. The device of claim 1, wherein the body portion defines a first opening of the passage at the upper surface of the body portion and a second opening of the passage at the lower surface of the body portion, and further wherein the first and second openings are of a different size.
- 16. A device for use in an intake path of an internal combustion engine, the device comprising a body portion having an upper surface and a lower surface, the body portion further including at least one passage surface defining at least one passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, wherein the passage surface defining the passage is a continuous surface from the upper surface of the body portion to the lower surface of the body portion, and further wherein the continuous surface extends from a first opening of the passage at the upper surface of the body portion inward towards the axis of the passage and then further extends away from the axis of the passage towards a second opening of the passage at the lower surface of the body portion.
- 17. The device of claim 16, wherein the continuous surface is closest to the axis of the passage at a position substantially equidistant between the lower surface and upper surface of the body portion.
- 18. The device of claim 16, wherein the passage surface defines a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage, each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, and further wherein at least a portion of each channel is at an angle relative to the axis of the passage.
- 19. The device of claim 18, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, wherein each passage surface further defining a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage with each channel extending from a channel opening in the upper surface to a channel opening in the lower surface, and further wherein the channels defined by one passage surface are at an angle different than an angle of channels defined by other passage surface.
- 20. The device of claim 16, wherein the body portion is an insert body portion sized to be positioned within an opening of another device body.
- 21. The device of claim 16, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, and further wherein an axis of at least one passage is parallel to an axis of at least one other passage.
- 22. The device of claim 16, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis from the upper surface to the lower surface, and further wherein an axis of at least one passage is at an angle relative to an axis of at least one other passage.
- 23. A device for use in an intake path of an internal combustion engine, the device comprising a device body portion including at least one passage surface, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis, wherein each passage surface further defines a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage, each channel extending from a first open end of the passage to a second open end of the passage, at least a portion of each channel is at an angle relative to the axis of the passage, and further wherein each passage surface is a continuous surface from the upper surface of the body portion to the lower surface of the body portion, the continuous surface extending from the first open end inward towards the axis of the passage and then further extends away from the axis of the passage towards the second open end of the passage.
- 24. The device of claim 23, wherein the continuous surface is closest to the axis of the passage at a position substantially equidistant between the first and second open ends of the passage.
- 25. The device of claim 23, wherein the body portion includes at least two passage surfaces, each passage surface defining a passage about an axis, each passage surface defines a plurality of channels about the axis of the passage with each channel extending from a first open end to a second open end of the passage, the channels defined by at least one passage including clockwise channels and the channels defined by at least one other passage including counterclockwise channels.
- 26. A device for use with an internal combustion engine, the device comprising:
a body portion; and at least one passage surface defining at least one passage about an axis through the body portion, wherein the passage has an inner circumference, wherein the passage surface defines a plurality of channels continuously about the inner circumference of the passage, and further wherein at least a portion of each channel is at an angle relative to the axis of the passage.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a single channel surface, and further wherein the single channel surface has a curved portion with a predetermined radius of curvature.
- 28. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface.
- 29. The device of claim 28, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a substantially planar surface.
- 30. The device of claim 28, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and second channel surface is a curved surface.
- 31. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a plurality of channel surfaces.
- 32. The device of claim 31, wherein the plurality of channel surfaces form one of a substantially V-type channel or a substantially rectangular-type channel.
- 33. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a curved surface having a radius of curvature, and further wherein the center of the radius of curvature is outside of the passage.
- 34. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a curved surface having a radius of curvature, and further wherein the center of the radius of curvature is on the same side relative to the curved surface as the axis of the passage.
- 35. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface sharing an edge thereof with the first channel surface.
- 36. The device of claim 26, wherein each channel extends along a length of the passage, and further wherein each channel along the entire channel length is at a predetermined angle relative to the axis of the passage.
- 37. The device of claim 26, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is at a predetermined angle different than one or more other channels.
- 38. A device for use with an internal combustion engine, the device comprising:
a body portion; and at least one passage surface defining at least one passage about an axis through the body portion, wherein the passage surface defines one or more channels, wherein each channel extends along a length of the passage, and further wherein each channel along the entire channel length is at a predetermined angle relative to the axis of the passage.
- 39. The device of claim 38, wherein the passage has an inner circumference, and further wherein the one or more channels are defined continuously about an inner circumference of the passage.
- 40. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the channels is defined by a single channel surface, and further wherein the single surface has a curved portion with a predetermined radius of curvature.
- 41. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface.
- 42. The device of claim 41, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a substantially planar surface.
- 43. The device of claim 41, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and second channel surface is a curved surface.
- 44. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the channels is defined by a plurality of channel surfaces.
- 45. The device of claim 44, wherein the plurality of channel surfaces form one of a substantially V-type channel or a substantially rectangular-type channel.
- 46. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a curved surface having a radius of curvature, and further wherein the center of the radius of curvature is outside of the passage.
- 47. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the plurality of channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface, wherein at least one of the first channel surface and the second channel surface is a curved surface having a radius of curvature, and further wherein the center of the radius of curvature is on the same side relative to the curved surface as the axis of the passage.
- 48. The device of claim 38, wherein one or more of the channels is defined by a first channel surface and a second channel surface sharing an edge thereof with the first channel surface.
- 49. The device of claim 38, wherein at least one of the one or more channels is at a predetermined angle different than another channel.
