Claims
- 1. A system for receiving light signals from a plurality of sources on a transmission optical fiber of a WDM optical fiber network, said system connected between said transmission optical fiber and a plurality of receivers, said system comprising
- a plurality of couplers;
- each coupler comprises
- first, second and third optical fibers;
- a first collimating lens having first and second end faces, and a longitudinal axis through said first and second end faces, ends of said first and second optical fibers in close proximity with each other and with said first end face;
- a filter in close proximity with said second end face of said first collimating lens;
- a second collimating lens and an end of said third optical fiber in close proximity with a first end face of said second collimating lens; and
- said first, second, third optical fibers, and said filter are arranged such that light signals from said first optical fiber at wavelengths below a predetermined wavelength travel into said second fiber and light signals from said first optical fiber at wavelengths above said predetermined wavelength travel into said third fiber;
- said plurality of couplers including a first coupler having its first optical fiber connected to said transmission optical fiber, each coupler of remaining couplers having its first optical fiber connected to a second or third optical fiber of another coupler and its second optical fiber connected to a first optical fiber of said another coupler or one of said receivers, and said predetermined wavelength of each filter of said couplers selected so that each receiver receives light signals at a particular wavelength from a second or third optical fiber from one of said couplers.
- 2. The receiving system of claim 1 wherein said predetermined wavelength monotonically increases in each coupler in said cascade.
- 3. The receiving system of claim 1 wherein each of said plurality of couplers has a filter selected to divide half of incoming light signals into a second and third optical fiber.
- 4. The receiving system of claim 3 wherein at least said first coupler has its second and third optical fibers connected to a first and a second remaining coupler respectively.
- 5. The receiving system of claim 1 wherein said filter comprises a long-pass filter.
- 6. The receiving system of claim 5 wherein said long-pass filter in each of said couplers comprises a dichroic mirror filter.
- 7. The receiving system of claim 6 wherein said first collimating lens and second collimating lens in each coupler comprise approximately quarter-pitch GRIN lenses.
- 8. The receiving system of claim 6 wherein said first collimating lens and second collimating lens in each coupler comprise non-GRIN collimating lenses.
- 9. The receiving system of claim 1 wherein said plurality of couplers are connected such that at least said first coupler has its second and third optical fibers connected to a first and a second remaining coupler respectively.
