Claims
- 1. Blood oxygenating apparatus for oxygenating venous blood removed from a patient,
- said apparatus comprising
- a membrane oxygen-to-blood transfer portion and
- a venous blood reservoir portion, said reservoir portion
- being of such rigidity that change of contents volume causes no corresponding change of reservoir portion volume,
- being so oriented that with change in contents volume a generally horizontal surface of contents rises or falls in said blood reservoir portion, and
- being disposed above said transfer portion, and
- means for delivering to and maintaining in said reservoir portion a substantial but varying volume of venous blood.
- 2. The blood oxygenating apparatus of claim 1 which includes also within said reservoir portion a blood defoamer.
- 3. The blood oxygenating apparatus of claim 1 in which a wall defining said blood reservoir portion therearound is rigid throughout.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a blood heater,
- said transfer portion, said wall, and said heater being constructed as an integral unit to avoid placing the reservoir portion lower than the transfer portion.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said wall is made of clear material, and further comprising a light colored member fixedly mounted within said blood reservoir portion and having an upper surface within said reservoir portion so that when blood contained in the reservoir portion drops below the upper surface, the light colored member is exposed, indicating low blood level.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said heater is provided in a lower portion under said reservoir portion.
