Claims
- 1. A method of making an integrally shielded magnetic resonance magnet comprising the steps of:
- (a) determining the magnet shield configuration based on the cryostat outer vessel vacuum and cryogenic requirements;
- (b) fabricating the outer vacuum vessel cylindrical shell and circular end faces of ferromagnetic material;
- (c) selecting the number of main coils, their axial and radial position and number of ampere-turns of an initial approximation of a magnet design;
- (d) determining the axial magnetic flux density at predetermined points in a working volume in the bore of the magnet due to the magnet design in the presence of the shield;
- (e) determining the magnetization of the iron shield;
- (f) checking the flux density in the working volume to see if it has reached a minimum inhomogeneity level;
- (g) determining the contribution of just the shield to the axial magnetic flux density at the predetermined points in the working volume of the magnet;
- (h) subtracting the shield contribution to the axial magnetic flux density from the desired flux density at the predetermined points in the working volume of the magnet;
- (i) synthesizing a coil design based on the axial magnetic flux density obtained in step h;
- (j) repeating steps d-i until a minimum level has been reached in step f;
- (k) fabricating the magnet coils based on the design that minimizes the inhomogeneities; and
- (l) positioning the magnet coils in the vacuum vessel.
- 2. An integrally shielded magnetic resonance magnet comprising:
- a cylindrical ferromagnetic shell;
- two ferromagnetic circular end plates each defining a central aperture extending axially therethrough, said end plates welded vacuum leak tight at their peripheries to either end of said shell;
- a nonmagnetic cylindrical tube welded vacuum leak tight between said central apertures of said end plates forming an axially extending bore through said cylindrical shell, said end plates, shell and nonmagnetic tube forming a vacuum vessel and shield; and
- magnet windings situated in the vacuum vessel synthesized for operating in the presence of the ferromagnetic vacuum vessel.
- 3. The magnet of claim 2 wherein said ferromagnetic shell and end plates are treated with rust inhibiting coatings.
