Claims
- 1. A combination plant, comprising hydrogenative coal liquefaction plant means including
- in an upstream region thereof, hydrogenative reactor means for converting feed coal in the presence of hydrogen and recycle dissolved coal and mineral residue to liquefaction plant products including hydrocarbon gases, dissolved liquid and normally solid dissolved coal together with mineral residue;
- in a downstream region thereof, product vapor-liquid separator means for separating hydrocarbon gases in said liquefaction plant products from a product slurry including dissolved liquid and normally solid dissolved coal together with mineral residue; and
- recycle conduit means extending from said downstream to said upstream region of said liquefaction plant means for recycling to said liquefaction plant means a portion of said product slurry;
- vacuum distillation means for vacuum distilling a non-recycled portion of said product slurry to substantially completely separate dissolved liquid coal from said product slurry to form a hydrocarbonaceous vacuum slurry comprising mineral residue and substantially the entire yield of normally solid dissolved coal from said liquefaction plant means;
- distillation conduit means extending from said downstream region of said liquefaction plant means to said vacuum distillation means for transporting said non-recycled portion of said product slurry to said vacuum distillation means;
- oxidative slagging gasification plant means for oxidatively gasifying the hydrocarbonaceous material solely in said vacuum slurry from said vacuum distillation means to produce synthesis gas therefrom while forming molten slag;
- vacuum slurry conduit means extending between said vacuum distillation means and said oxidative gasification plant means for transporting substantially only the entire hydrocarbonaceous vacuum slurry from said vacuum distillation means to said oxidative gasification plant means as substantially the entire hydrocarbonaceous feed to said gasification plant means, said vacuum slurry conduit means having its only inlet connected to said vacuum distillation means;
- slag removal means at the bottom of said gasification plant means for the removal of slag therefrom;
- shift reactor means for converting a first portion of said synthesis gas to a hydrogen-rich stream;
- gasification plant conduit means extending between said gasification plant means and said shift reactor means for transporting said first portion of synthesis gas to said shift reactor means;
- shift reactor conduit means extending from said shift reactor means to the hydrogenative reactor means in said liquefaction plant means for transporting said hydrogen-rich stream from said shift reactor means to said coal liquefaction plant means, said shift reactor conduit means completing a first plant circuit wherein said vacuum slurry is converted to and used for hydrogen in said hydrogenative reactor means;
- at least one synthesis gas combustion zone means including synthesis gas burner means in said combination plant; and synthesis gas conduit means extending from said oxidative gasification plant means to said combustion zone means for passage of a second portion of said synthesis gas to said synthesis gas combustion zone means for burning said second portion of synthesis gas as fuel to supply energy for said combination plant, said synthesis gas conduit means completing a second plant circuit wherein said vacuum slurry is oxidatively converted to and used for fuel for said combination plant to increase the thermal efficiency of said combination plant.
- 2. The combination plant of claim 1 including atmospheric distillation means connected into said distillation conduit means downstream from said vapor-liquid separator means and in advance of said vacuum distillation means for separating a portion of the dissolved liquid coal from the non-recycled portion of said product slurry.
- 3. The combination plant of claim 1 wherein said hydrogenative reactor means in said coal liquefaction plant means comprises preheating means for preheating feed coal, hydrogen and recycle dissolved coal and mineral residue; followed by dissolver means for reacting said feed coal with hydrogen and recycle dissolved coal.
- 4. The combination plant of claim 1 including acid gas removal means downstream from said shift reactor means for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from said hydrogen-rich stream.
- 5. The combination plant of claim 1 including acid gas removal means connected to said synthesis gas conduit means for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from said second portion of synthesis gas.
- 6. The combination plant of claim 1 including methanation conduit means and plant means downstream from said gasification plant means for removing and methanating a third portion of synthesis gas from said gasification plant means.
- 7. The combination plant of claim 1 including CO--H.sub.2 separation plant means downstream from said gasification plant means for separating the CO and H.sub.2 in a third portion of said synthesis gas to form a second hydrogen-rich stream and a carbon monoxide-rich stream; and carbon monoxide conduit means for transporting said carbon monoxide-rich stream to at least one combustion zone in said combination plant.
- 8. A combination plant, comprising hydrogenative coal liquefaction plant means including
- in an upstream region thereof, hydrogenative reactor means for converting feed coal in the presence of hydrogen and recycle dissolved coal and mineral residue to liquefaction plant products including hydrocarbon gases, dissolved liquid and normally solid dissolved coal together with mineral residue;
- in a downstream region thereof, product vapor-liquid separator means for separating hydrocarbon gases in said liquefaction plant products from a product slurry including dissolved liquid and normally solid dissolved coal together with mineral residue; and
- recycle conduit means extending from said downstream to said upstream region of said liquefaction plant means for recycling to said liquefaction plant means a portion of said product slurry;
- vacuum distillation means for vacuum distilling a non-recycled portion of said product slurry to substantially completely separate dissolved liquid coal from said product slurry to form a hydrocarbonaceous vacuum slurry comprising mineral residue and substantially the entire yield of normally solid dissolved coal from said liquefaction plant means;
- distillation conduit means extending from said downstream region of said liquefaction plant means to said vacuum distillation means for transporting said non-recycled portion of said product slurry to said vacuum distillation means;
- oxidative slagging gasification plant means for oxidatively gasifying the hydrocarbonaceous material solely in said vacuum slurry from said vacuum distillation means to produce synthesis gas therefrom while forming molten slag;
- vacuum slurry conduit means extending between said vacuum distillation means and said oxidative gasification plant means for transporting substantially only the entire hydrocarbonaceous vacuum slurry from said vacuum distillation means to said oxidative gasification plant means as substantially the entire hydrocarbonaceous feed to said gasification plant means, said vacuum slurry conduit means having its only inlet connected to said vacuum distillation means;
- slag removal means at the bottom of said gasification plant means for the removal of slag therefrom;
- CO--H.sub.2 separation means for separating the CO and H.sub.2 in a portion of said synthesis gas to produce a hydrogen-rich stream and a carbon monoxide-rich stream;
- synthesis gas conduit means extending from said oxidative gasification plant means to said CO--H.sub.2 separation means for transporting at least said portion of said synthesis gas to said CO--H.sub.2 separation means;
- hydrogen conduit means extending from said CO--H.sub.2 separation means to the hydrogenative reactor means in said liquefaction plant means for transporting said hydrogen-rich stream to said coal liquefaction plant means, said hydrogen conduit means completing a first plant circuit wherein said vacuum slurry is converted to and used for hydrogen in said hydrogenative reactor means;
- at least one carbon monoxide combustion zone means including carbon monoxide burner means in said combination plant; and
- carbon monoxide conduit means extending from said CO--H.sub.2 separation means to said combustion zone means for transporting said carbon monoxide-rich stream to said carbon monoxide combustion means for burning said carbon monoxide as fuel to supply energy for said combination plant, said carbon monoxide conduit means completing a second plant circuit wherein said vacuum slurry is converted to and used for fuel for said combination plant to increase the thermal efficiency of said combination plant.
- 9. The combination plant of claim 8 wherein said CO--H.sub.2 separation means is a cryogenic means.
- 10. The combination plant of claim 8 wherein said CO--H.sub.2 separation means is an adsorption means.
- 11. The combination plant of claim 8 including shift reactor means for conversion of an other portion of said synthesis gas to an other hydrogen-rich stream; gasification plant conduit means extending between said gasification plant means and said shift reactor means for transporting said other portion of synthesis gas to said shift reactor means; and an other hydrogen conduit means extending between said shift reactor means and said hydrogenative reactor means for transporting said other hydrogen-rich stream to said coal liquefaction plant means.
- 12. The combination plant of claim 8 including an other synthesis gas conduit means extending from said gasification plant means for passage of an other portion of said synthesis gas as fuel to at least one combustion zone in said combination plant.
- 13. The combination plant of claim 8 including atmospheric distillation means connected to said distillation conduit means downstream from said vapor-liquid separator means and in advance of said vacuum distillation means for separating a portion of the dissolved liquid coal from the non-recycled portion of said product slurry.
