Claims
- 1. An induction module including an integrated intake manifold and air cleaner system for an internal combustion engine, said induction module comprising:
- a molded plastic intake manifold having upright walls;
- a plurality of said walls integrally molded with an upper portion of said intake manifold and upwardly extending about the perimeter of said intake manifold;
- a molded plastic cover piece detachably fit to upper edges of said upright walls to define an enclosed space within said walls wherein said cover piece includes a baffle portion extending downward from the inside of said cover piece and fit to an upper side of said intake manifold to subdivide said enclosed space into two compartments;
- said intake manifold including a plenum and a series of runners;
- a throttle body mounted to said plenum and disposed within said enclosed space;
- an air cleaner element mounted to said throttle body and also disposed within said enclosed space, said air cleaner element in one of said compartments.
- 2. The induction module according to claim 1 further including a fuel rail and fuel injector mounted within said enclosed space.
- 3. The induction module according to claim 1 further including an intake tube mounted to said cover piece and entering into the other of said compartments, an opening in said partition allowing fluid communication between said two compartments, said inlet tube having one end juxtaposed with said opening with a gap therebetween, whereby said other compartment acts as an expansion chamber.
- 4. The induction module according to claim 1 wherein said air cleaner element is tubular in shape and extends vertically in said enclosed space, a lower end having an opening received on and sealed to said throttle body.
- 5. The induction module according to claim 4 wherein said air cleaner element has an upper end held within a locating ring molded into the inside of the top of said cover piece.
- 6. The induction module according to claim 1 wherein said intake manifold is formed by two separate molded pieces, an upper manifold piece and a lower manifold piece welded together along a generally horizontal parting line, said upright walls integral with said upper manifold piece.
- 7. The induction module according to claim 6 wherein a pair of open-topped side wells are formed on either side of said manifold plenum and runner portions of said lower manifold piece.
- 8. The induction module according to claim 7 wherein said upper manifold piece is formed with openings on either side of said plenum and runner portions thereof, each opening aligned with a respective side well to place said side wells in fluid communication with said enclosed space.
- 9. The induction module according to claim 8 further including an intake tube mounted to said cover piece and entering into the other of said compartments, an opening in said partition allowing fluid communication between said two compartments, said inlet tube having one end juxtaposed with said opening with a gap therebetween, whereby said other compartment acts as an expansion chamber, said side wells and said one compartment defining an expansion chamber.
- 10. The induction module according to claim 1 wherein said walls are arranged to form a rectangular shape, and said cover piece has a corresponding rectangular shape, together forming a box-like enclosure.
- 11. The induction module according to claim 10 wherein said walls include a pair of angled side walls extending from a short front wall to a higher rear wall, said cover piece having side walls angled in opposite fashion to be fit to said angled walls of said molded intake manifold.
