Claims
- 1. In a system having a liquid storage container having a liquid level probe adapted to measure a liquid level in the storage container and to generate an output signal representative of the liquid level along with sensors adapted to sense conditions of the storage container independent of said probe and to produce output signals representative of said sensed conditions, the method of acquiring information at a remote location of the liquid level in the container and the conditions independent of the probe comprising the steps of:
- measuring a liquid level in said liquid storage container with said liquid level probe;
- generating a measured liquid level output signal;
- sensing a condition independent of said probe with said sensors, the sensors generating a sensed condition signal, the sensing step further including the step of:
- sensing a plurality of conditions independent of said probe to generate a plurality of sensed condition signals each representative of a particular sensed condition independent of the probe;
- combining said measured liquid level output signal and the sensed condition signal to produce a combined signal, the step of combining said signals to produce a combined signal further including the steps of:
- producing a series of pulses uniquely spaced according to the states of the plurality of sensed condition signals; and
- inputting the measured liquid level signal between adjacent pulses of the series of uniquely spaced pulses; and
- transmitting the combined signal over a two wire transmission line to the remote location.
- 2. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- the step of combining said signals to produce a combined signal further comprises the steps of:
- producing a series of pulses uniquely spaced according to the states of the sensed condition signals;
- initiating the step of measuring the liquid level in the container upon production of one pulse of the series of pulses and generating the measured liquid level output signal before the occurrence of a next pulse of the series of pulses; and wherein
- the step of transmitting the combined signal over the two wire transmission line comprises transmitting the spaced pulses and the liquid level signal as they occur.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the step producing the series of pulses comprises the step of:
- producing successive pulses spaced at a time period dependent on the state of all of the sensed condition signals.
- 4. The method as defined in claim 3 further comprising the step of establishing a unique time period between successive pulses for each unique combination of the states of all of the sensed condition signals.
- 5. In a system having a liquid storage container having a liquid level probe adapted to measure a liquid level in the storage container and to generate an output signal representative of the liquid level along with sensors adapted to sense conditions of the storage container independent of said probe and to produce output signals representative of said sensed conditions, the method of acquiring information at a remote location of the liquid level in the container and the conditions independent of the probe comprising the steps of:
- measuring a liquid level in said liquid storage container with said liquid level probe;
- generating a measured liquid level output signal;
- sensing at least one set of like conditions independent of said probe with said sensors, the sensors generating a plurality of like conditions signals each representative of a particular sensed condition independent of said probe;
- combining said measured liquid level output signal and the sensed set of condition signals to produce a combined signal, the step of combining said signals to produce a combined signal further including the steps of:
- generating the combined signal with a plurality of discrete frames, one of the frames assigned to the plurality of like condition signals;
- inserting pulses into the one frame corresponding to the state of each of the sensed like conditions signals;
- inserting pulses into another one of the frames, the pulses corresponding to the measured liquid level output signal; and
- transmitting the combined signal over a two wire transmission line to the remote location.
- 6. The method as defined in claim 1 further comprising the steps of:
- connecting a utilization device at the remote location to the two wire transmission line for receiving the combined signal; and
- decoding the combined signal in the utilization device to recover the binary state of the ambient conditions.
- 7. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- the liquid storage container is formed with double walls, with an interstitial space between the double walls, the method further comprising the steps of:
- disposing the sensors in the interstitial space;
- forming at least two of the sensors to be separately responsive to the presence of diverse fluids in the interstitial space.
- 8. The method as defined in claim 5 wherein the step of generating the combined signal with a plurality of discrete frames further comprises the steps of:
- generating the combined signal in a plurality of discrete, time sequential frames
- dividing the one frame into a plurality of discrete, time sequential periods; and
- inserting a pulse into any one of the periods defining one state of a sensor output assigned to the one period.
