Claims
- 1. An integrated position and direction system comprising:a) a satellite positioning system including a receiver adapted to receive satellite position determining signals and a microprocessor for determining position and for determining heading; b) a digital compass for determining direction; c) a radio communication module coupled to said satellite positioning system, said radio communication module adapted to receive data relating to nearby features; and d) a display device coupled to said satellite positioning system and coupled to said digital compass for generating a display that indicates the position and orientation of said nearby features relative to said integrated position and direction system, said display oriented using one of said direction and said heading.
- 2. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 1 wherein said radio communication module includes a cellular radio modem.
- 3. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 1 wherein said display is oriented using said heading when said integrated position and direction system is moving and is oriented using said direction when said integrated position and direction system is not moving.
- 4. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 3 further comprising:a housing, said display, said satellite positioning system, said radio communication module and said digital compass disposed in said housing.
- 5. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 4 wherein said housing is palm-sized.
- 6. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 1 further comprising:a first housing, said display, said satellite positioning system, and said digital compass disposed in said first housing; and wherein said radio communication module is disposed in a second housing that is coupled to said first housing.
- 7. An integrated position and direction system comprising:a) a display device; b) a satellite positioning system including a receiver adapted to receive position determining signals from satellites, said satellite positioning system adapted to determine position and heading; c) a digital compass coupled to said satellite positioning system, said digital compass adapted to determine direction; d) a radio communication module coupled to said satellite positioning system, said radio communication module adapted to receive data relating to nearby features; and e) a controller for controlling the operations of said integrated satellite positioning system and digital compass, said controller coupled to said satellite positioning system and coupled to said digital compass and coupled to said radio communication module, said controller coupled to said display device and operable to generate a display on said display device that indicates the position and orientation of said nearby features relative to said integrated position and direction system, said display oriented using one of said direction and said heading.
- 8. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 7 wherein said radio communication module includes a cellular radio modem.
- 9. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 7 wherein said display is oriented using said heading when said integrated position and direction system is moving and is oriented using said direction when said integrated position and direction system is not moving.
- 10. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 9 further comprising:a housing, said display, said satellite positioning system, said radio communication module and said digital compass disposed in said housing.
- 11. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 10 wherein said housing is palm-sized.
- 12. An integrated position and direction system as recited in claim 7 further comprising:a first housing, said display, said satellite positioning system, and said digital compass disposed in said first housing; and wherein said radio communication module is disposed in a second housing that is coupled to said first housing.
- 13. A method for updating data using an integrated position and direction system that includes a satellite positioning system, a digital compass, and a radio communication module, said method comprising the steps of:a) determining position using said satellite positioning system; b) communicating with a remote computing device using said radio communication module; c) sending said determined position to said remote computing device; d) receiving a response from said remote computing device, said response including data relating to features located near said determined position; and e) generating a display on said integrated position and direction system, said display oriented using one of said satellite positioning system and said digital compass, wherein said display is oriented using said heading when said integrated position and direction system is moving and is oriented using said direction when said integrated position and direction system is not moving, said display indicating the position and orientation of said features relative to said integrated position and direction system.
- 14. A method as recited in claim 13 wherein said remote computing device receives said determined position and wherein said remote computing device generates a response that includes data relating to features located near said determined position, said remote computing device sending said response to said integrated position and direction system.
- 15. A method as recited in claim 13 further comprising the step of:f) receiving user input; g) determining position using said satellite positioning system, said determined position corresponding to the position at which said user input was received; and h) sending said user input and said position determined in step g) to said remote site.
- 16. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein step f) further comprises the steps of:f1) displaying icons on a display of said integrated position and direction system, said icons representing features located near said integrated position and direction system; f2) selecting one of said icons; and f3) inputting a status relating to the feature represented by said icon.
- 17. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein, upon inputting a status as recited in step f3), said integrated position and direction system automatically initiates communication with said remote computing device and automatically transmits an indication of said selected status to said remote computing device.
- 18. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein, upon selection of one of said icons as recited in step f2), a pop-up menu is displayed that includes a plurality of status options.
- 19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein, upon selecting one of said plurality of status options, said integrated position and direction system determines the priority associated with the selected status option, and wherein said integrated position and direction system automatically initiates communication and automatically transmits an indication of said selected status option to said remote computing device when said priority is a high priority.
