- 4. A cellular neural network comprising:
a plurality of cells arranged in an array, each cell maintaining a present state xij; and self normalizing circuits within each cell causing the present state of the cell to evolve over time based on the formula 10Cx.ij(t)=-xij(t)R+∑kl∈Nr(ij)Akl F(αkl(t))+ ∑kl∈Nr(ij)Bkl F(ukl(t)-xij(t))=+Iijwhere xij(t) is a rate of state change, R and C are constants, Akl and Bkl are template weights to be applied to a neighborhood Nr around the cell, α(t) is a function of at least one state variable of a cell in Nr, Ukl(t) is a cell input, Iij is a cell bias current, and F(ξ) describes a circuit operating on ξ.
- 5. The cellular neural network as in claim 4 wherein

- 7. The cellular neural network as in claim 4 wherein F(ξ) describes a transconductance circuit.
- 8. The cellular neural network as in claim 4 wherein F(ξ) is substantially a hyperbolic tangent function.
- 9. The cellular neural network as in claim 4 wherein each of the plurality of cells further includes at least one of a plurality of sensors, at least one input ukl(t) in each cell is from a sensor included in that cell.
- 10. The cellular neural network as in claim 4 wherein each cell further comprises memory holding the template weights.
- 11. The cellular neural network as in claim 10 wherein the memory is not programmable.
- 12. The cellular neural network as in claim 10 wherein at least a subset of the plurality of sensors comprises an array of photosensors.
- 13. A system comprising:
a convolution array; a cellular logic array; and a bus interconnecting the convolution array and the cellular logic array, the bus delivering output from at least one cell in the convolution array as the input to at least one cell of the cellular logic array.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein each cell in the convolution array includes at least one sensor.
- 15. The system of claim 13 further comprising control logic in communication with the cellular logic array, the control logic operative to command at least a subset of cells in the cellular logic array to perform a sequence of operations of output delivered over the bus.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein the size of the array of cells in the convolution array equals the size of the array of cells in the cellular logic array.
- 17. A system comprising:
a programmable sensing array having a plurality of cells, each programmable sensing array cell including:
a sensor, memory holding a sensing weight factor, and a variable gain transconductance amplifier with an input connected to the sensor, the amplifier variable gain based on the sensing weight factor; a programmable cellular logic array having a plurality of cells, each programmable cellular logic array cell including:
memory holding an output weight factor, and logic generating an output signal based on a received signal and on the output weight factor; and a bus interconnecting the programmable sensing array and the programmable cellular array, the bus delivering output from at least one transconductance amplifier in the programmable sensing array as the received signal for logic in at least one cell of the programmable cellular logic array.
- 18. The system of claim 17 wherein at least one sensor in the programmable sensing array is a photosensor.
- 19. The system of claim 17 further comprising control logic in communication with the programmable cellular logic array, the control logic operative to command at least a subset of the programmable cellular logic array cells to perform a sequence of operations on transconductance amplifier output received over the bus.
- 20. The system of claim 17 wherein the size of the array of cells in the programmable sensing array equals the size of the array of cells in the programmable cellular logic array.
