Claims
- 1. A method a producing a paper product, the method comprising the steps of:culturing a plant material in a confined bed, the plant material capable of absorbing or sequestering a pollutant from water; running water to be treated over the bed; permitting the plant material to sequester a pollutant from the water, thereby cleansing the water; harvesting the plant material, thereby removing the pollutant from the bed, to produce a wet biomass; mixing the wet biomass with a shredded fibrous material to produce a pulp; and producing a paper product from the pulp.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1, further comprising the step, following the harvesting step, of partially dewatering the biomass to thicken the algal biomass.
- 3. The method recited in claim 2, wherein the shredded fibrous material comprises shredded recycled newsprint.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the plant material is chosen from the group consisting of water hyacinth, dollar weed, water lettuce, and duckweed.
- 5. A bioremediation, packaging, and soil improvement method comprising the steps of:culturing algae in an attached periphyton bed; running water to be treated over the periphyton bed; permitting the algae to sequester a pollutant from the water, thereby cleansing the water; harvesting the algea, thereby removing the pollutant from the periphyton bed, to produce a wet algal biomass; mixing the wet algal biomass with a shredded fibrous material to produce a pulp; producing a package from the pulp; using the package to transport an item to a delivery site; and adding the package to soil adjacent the delivery site for enriching the soil.
- 6. The method recited in claim 5, further comprising the step, following the harvesting step, of partially dewatering the algal biomass to thicken the algal biomass.
- 7. The method recited in claim 6, wherein the shredded fibrous material comprises shredded recycled newsprint.
- 8. The method recited in claim 5, wherein the package producing step comprises molding the pulp into a desired shape.
- 9. The method recited in claim 8, further comprising the step, following the harvesting step, of partially dewatering the biomass to thicken the algal biomass.
- 10. The method recited in claim 8, wherein the shredded fibrous material comprises shredded recycled newsprint.
- 11. The method recited in claim 8, wherein the package producing step comprises molding the pulp into a desired shape.
- 12. A bioremediation, packaging, and soil improvement method comprising the steps of:culturing a plant material chosen from a group consisting of water hyacinth, dollar weed, water lettuce, and duckweed in a confined bed, the plant material capable of absorbing or sequestering a pollutant from water; running water to be treated over the bed; permitting the plant material to sequester a pollutant from the water, thereby cleansing the water; harvesting the plant material, thereby removing pollutant from the bed, to produce a wet biomass; mixing the wet biomass with a shredded fibrous material to produce a pulp; producing a package from the pulp; using the package to transport an item to a delivery site; and adding the package to soil adjacent the delivery site for enriching the soil.
