Claims
- 1. An apparatus for storing a plurality of fluids, the apparatus comprising:
a first tank having a first pressurized membrane substantially surrounding a first fluid; a second tank having a second pressurized membrane substantially surrounding a second fluid; a bulkhead sealably engaging the first and second pressurized membranes; and a rigid extension tube sealably engaging the bulkhead to convey fluid from the first tank through the second pressurized membrane, the rigid extension tube further being decoupled within the second tank to permit different rates of strain of the second tank and the extension tube.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bulkhead is substantially rigid, and the rigid extension tube is translatably and sealably engaged by the second pressurized membrane by a seal mechanism chosen from the group consisting of an unbroken liner, an O-ring type seal, and a rod packing type seal.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bulkhead is substantially flexible, and wherein the liner further comprises:
a concave radius; a convex radius; and a substantially flat portion disposed between the concave radius and the convex radius, the substantially flat portion being sized to permit alteration of a volume of the first tank.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bulkhead is substantially flexible, and wherein the bulkhead comprises a substantially elliptical shape.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bulkhead is substantially integrated with a liner of the first tank.
- 6. A method for forming structures for use in a vehicle, the method comprising:
fabricating an internal structural feature; fabricating a liner for a fluid storage tank; and nesting the liner and the internal structural feature to form an assembly.
- 7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:
combining the assembly with a mandrel to form a mandrel assembly; and applying a composite laminate to the mandrel assembly.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein applying a composite laminate to the mandrel assembly comprises utilizing a method chosen from the group consisting of filament winding, fiber placement, and hand-lay-up.
- 9. The method of claim 6, further comprising mechanically installing the assembly into a vehicle body.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising mechanically installing a dome, a second liner, a second internal structural feature, and an engine into the body of the vehicle.
- 11. The method of claim 6, further comprising forming a dual assembly by aligning the assembly with a second assembly for a second vehicle, the second assembly comprising a second internal structural feature and a second liner.
- 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:
combining the dual assembly with a mandrel to form a dual mandrel assembly; applying a composite laminate to the dual mandrel assembly; and parting the assembly from the second assembly.
- 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising installing the assembly in a vehicle and installing the second assembly in a second vehicle.
- 14. The method of claim 6, further comprising combining the internal structural feature with a second internal structural feature for a second vehicle and a mandrel to form a mandrel assembly.
- 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:
laminating the internal structural feature and the second internal structural feature; parting the internal structural feature from the second internal structural feature; installing the internal structural feature on a tool; positioning the liner proximate the internal structural feature; and laminating the liner.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising installing the internal structural feature and the liner, together with a second liner and an engine, into a vehicle.
