- 4. In a communication network having transmission medium with at least one multistation access unit MAU operatively connected to the transmission medium and said MAU having a plurality of access ports through which devices are coupled to the transmission medium, a method for allowing access ports to which devices are connected to insert into the network comprising the steps of:
- (a) determining when one of the access ports connected to one of the devices wants entry into the network;
- (b) with the one of the access ports outputting signals received from the attached device on a signal transmission output path, generating no signal condition at a signal transmission input path to the one of the access ports;
- (c) detecting, at the signal transmission output path from the one of the access ports, electrical signals output from the one of the access ports coupled to the device in response to the no signal condition generated at the signal transmission input path;
- (d) using the electrical signals in step (c) to detect the data transmission rate of the device; and
- (e) inserting the one of the access ports and coupled device into the network only if the data transmission rate of the device matches the transmission rate of the communication network.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the electrical signals include IDLES.
- 6. In a multiport access unit having network ports for connections to the transmission media of a communications network and access ports for connecting to devices, an apparatus for use in the multiport access unit to block devices operating at data rates different from the rate at which data is being transmitted on the communications network comprising;
- at least one relay/switching assembly, operatively positioned within the multistation access unit and in a signal transmission input path and a signal transmission output path of at least one of the plurality of access ports, for causing a device attached to the at least one of said access ports to output on the signal transmission output path known electrical signals, including IDLES, at a single fixed frequency;
- a speed detect circuit arrangement operatively coupled to the at least one relay/switching assembly, said speed detect circuit arrangement using the known signals at the single fixed frequency to generate an indication signal representative of a data rate of the device; and
- a controller for correlating the indication signal and the data rate on the communications network and allowing the device to enter the network only if the data rate of the device and the data rate on the communications network are compatible.
- 7. A data communications network comprising:
- a main ring transmission media, communicating at a selected data rate;
- at least one concentrator connected to the main ring, said at least one concentrator having a plurality of attached devices, and further wherein said at least one concentrator contains a speed detect circuit which determines the data transmission speed of an attached device;
- a switching circuit for causing the attached device to output IDLE signals and directing the IDLE signals to the speed detect circuit which uses said IDLE signals to generate speed indication signals; and
- a processor responsive to the speed indication signals and for controlling the switching circuit to permit the attached device access to the node if the data transmission speed of the device matches the data transmission rate of the network.
