- means for continuously and smoothly scrolling said scroll picture image on said display screen as scrolling grid, said processor being responsive to a single forward control signal from said remote control to initiate continuous and smooth scrolling of said grid in a forward direction in pixel line increments, being responsive to a single reverse control signal from said remote control that is different than said single forward control signal to initiate continuous and smooth scrolling of said grid in a reverse direction in pixel line increments, and being responsive to a single stop control signal from said remote control to stop said continuously and smoothly scrolling grid from scrolling.
- 2. A system interactively controlled by a remote control for displaying scroll program guide data on a display screen comprising:
- means for receiving said scroll program guide data;
- means for displaying said scroll program guide data on said display screen as a continuously, smoothly, and automatically scrolling grid, said means for displaying being responsive to a single forward control signal from said remote control to continuously and smoothly scroll said grid in a forward direction in pixel line increments, being responsive to a single reverse control signal from said remote control that is different than said single forward control signal to continuously and smoothly scroll said grid in a reverse direction in pixel line increments, and being responsive to a single stop control signal from said remote control to stop said continuously and smoothly scrolling grid from scrolling in pixel line increments; and
- means for adjusting the speed at which said continuously and smoothly scrolling grid is automatically scrolled.
- 3. The system of claim 2 further comprising means for redrawing said grid on said display screen indexed to display all of the scroll program guide data for the current top channel when the scrolling arid is stopped.
- 4. The system of claim 2 wherein said grid comprises a plurality of time slots, said system further comprising means for advancing said grid by at least one of said time slots.
- 5. The system of claim 4 further comprising means for redrawing said grid to display an earlier one of said time slots.
- 6. The system of claim 2 further comprising means for entering a highlight mode in which a portion of said grid corresponding to a selected television program is highlighted.
- 7. The system of claim 6 further comprising means for displaying a program description relevant to said selected television program.
- 8. The system of claim 6 further comprising means for moving the highlighted portion of said grid.
- 9. The system of claim 6 further comprising means for exiting said highlight mode.
- 10. The system of claim 6 further comprising means for displaying said grid on the lower half of said display screen and a television channel on the upper half of said display screen.
- 11. The system of claim 10 wherein said television channel is a programming data channel.
- 12. The system of claim 2 wherein said grid comprises a predetermined number of lines of pixels, the system further comprising means for moving said lines of pixels by a predetermined number of lines at predetermined time intervals to scroll the grid at a predetermined scrolling speed.
- 13. The system of claim 12 further comprising means for adjusting the number of lines that are moved at each of said predetermined time intervals to adjust the speed of said scrolling grid.
- 14. A method of displaying television program guide data on a display using a program guide system, comprising the steps of:
- receiving scroll program guide data;
- displaying said scroll program guide data on said display in the form of a continuously, smoothly, and automatically scrolling grid;
- directing the grid to continuously and smoothly scroll in a forward direction in pixel line increments by transmitting a single forward control signal from a remote control to said program guide system;
- directing the grid to continuously and smoothly scroll in a reverse direction in pixel line increments by transmitting a single reverse control signal from said remote control that is different than said single forward control signal to said program guide system;
- stopping the grid from continuously and smoothly scrolling in pixel line increments by transmitting a single stop control signal from said remote control to said program guide system; and
- adjusting the speed at which said continuously and smoothly scrolling grid is automatically scrolled.
- 15. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of redrawing said grid on said display screen indexed to display all of the scroll program guide data for the current top channel when the scrolling arid is stopped.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said grid comprises a plurality of time slots, said method further comprising the step of advancing said grid by at least one of said time slots.
- 17. The method of claim 16 further comprising the step of redrawing said grid to display an earlier one of said time slots.
- 18. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of entering a highlight mode in which a portion of said grid corresponding to a selected television program is highlighted.
- 19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of displaying a program description relevant to said selected television program.
- 20. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of moving the highlighted portion of said grid.
- 21. The method of claim 19 further comprising the step of exiting said highlight mode.
- 22. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of displaying said grid on the lower half of said display and a television channel on the upper half of said display screen.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein said television channel is a programming data channel.
- 24. The method of claim 14 wherein said grid comprises a predetermined number of lines of pixels, said method further comprising the step of moving said lines of pixels by a predetermined number of lines at predetermined time intervals to scroll the grid at a predetermined scrolling speed.
- 25. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of adjusting the the number of lines that are moved at each of said predetermined time intervals to adjust the speed of said scrolling grid.
- 26. A method of displaying television program guide data on a display using a program guide system, comprising the steps of:
- receiving scroll program guide data;
- displaying said scroll program guide data on said display as a continuously, smoothly, and automatically scrolling grid;
- directing the grid to continuously and smoothly scroll in a forward direction in pixel line increments by transmitting a single forward control signal from a remote control to said program guide system;
- directing the grid to continuously and smoothly scroll in a reverse direction in pixel line increments by transmitting a single reverse control signal from said remote control to said program guide system; and
- stopping the grid from continuously and smoothly scrolling by transmitting a single stop control signal from said remote control to said program guide system.
