Claims
- 1. A composition comprising, as a continuous carrier phase, a solid or liquid material selected from the group consisting of non-silicon-containing organic material and silicon-containing organic material,
- and as a discontinuous phase uniformly dispersed therein, as an additive, at least one compound selected from those which conform substantially to the crystalline structure having the empirical formula
- (Li.sup.+ A.sup.-v.sub.1/v).sub.y.2Al(OH).sub.3.nH.sub.2 O
- wherein A represents a multivalent radical of a polycarboxylic compound, said A conforming to the formula
- R(COO.sup.-).sub.x
- where x is a numerical value of at least 4, and where R is an organic moiety to which the carboxylic groups are attached,
- where v is a valence of at least 4,
- where 1/v is a quantity of A ions or radicals sufficient to substantially satisfy the valence requirements of Li,
- where y is a numerical value at least sufficient to maintain the crystalline structure, and
- where n represents zero or the number of waters of hydration.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is a non-silicon-containing organic material.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is a silicon-containing organic material.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is at least one organic material characterized as aliphatic, paraffinic, bicyclic, alicyclic, aromatic, alkane, alkene, arylene, isoalkylene, isoalkane, or isoalkene, including those which are substituted or unsubstituted, and including those which contain heteroatoms of the groups consisting of N, S, O, Si, P, F, Cl, Br, and I.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is an organic polymer or resin.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is a silicone polymer.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is at least one thermoplastic of the group consisting of hydrocarbon wax, paraffin, olefin polymer, olefin copolymer, vinyl polymer, vinyl copolymer, polycarbonate, polyalkyleneimine, polyether, epoxy polyurethane, polysulfone, polysiloxane, polyterpene, polyfluorocarbon, polyimide, silicone resin, polyamide, polyalkyleneoxide, and polyacrylate.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is an organic which is liquid at ambient temperatures and pressures.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is an organic thermosetting material of the group consisting of epoxy, epoxy-novolac, vinylester, polyester, polyurethane, polyether, GLYPTAL resin, phenolic resin, ureaformaldehyde resin, and urea condensation resin.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is an organic material which is solid at ambient temperatures and pressures but which is dissolved in a solvent.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein the continuous carrier phase is an organic material which contains at least a trace of halogen values.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the A in the formula represents the multivalent radical of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein the A in the formula represents the multivalent radical of pyromellitic acid.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 wherein the A in the formula represents the multivalent radical of polyacrylic acid.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 wherein the A in the formula represents the multivalent radical of polymethacrylic acid.
