Claims
- 1. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means operably engagable with the at least one overhead rail for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; and means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration, wherein the exchanging means includes at least one workstation having at least one handling means for disengaging the supporting means from the moving means, and a plurality of storage compartments for storing the disengaged supporting means.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:means for locating the supporting means with respect to the moving means.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the locating means further comprises a plurality of supporting plates extending from each of the plurality of supporting means, such that the supporting plates extend along opposite sides of the moving means when the supporting means is operably engaged with the moving means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the exchanging means further comprises:the at least one workstation having the at least one handling means for engaging a replacement antler nest for the moving means; and a plurality of storage compartments for storing the replacement antler nests.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the exchanging means is operable to exchange the supporting means while maintaining a maximum rate of production of the assembly line.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the supporting means further comprises a plurality of antler nests, each antler nest individually engagable with the moving means, at least one antler nest corresponding to each different component configuration to be transported along the assembly line.
- 7. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means operably engagable with the, at least one overhead rail for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration; and means for locating the supporting means with respect to the moving means, wherein the locating means includes at least one locating pin mounted on the moving means for releasible locking engagement with an interchangeable component nest of the supporting means to hold the interchangeable component nest in position with respect to the moving means.
- 8. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; and means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration, wherein the exchanging means includes at least one workstation having at least one handling means for disengaging the supporting means from the moving means, a plurality of storage compartments for storing the disengaged supporting means, wherein the at least one handling means engages at least one slot in the supporting means and is operable to move the supporting means along a vertical axis and two horizontal axes normal to one another.
- 9. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; and means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration, wherein the exchanging means includes at least one vertically extending member moveable horizontally along a path adjacent a portion of the assembly line, at least one horizontally extending member moveable vertically along the at least one vertically extending member between first and second vertical end limits of travel and at least one extendible member supported from the horizontally extending member for movement between a retracted position and a first position extended into operable engagement with the supporting means carried by the moving means along the assembly, the at least one extendible member for lifting the supporting means out of engagement with respect to the moving means when in the first extended position.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the exchanging means further comprises:the at least one extendible member moveable to a second extended position opposite from the first extended position with respect to the retracted position, the at least one extendible member for manipulating the supporting means into and out of engagement with a storage compartment spaced from the portion of the assembly line accessible along the path of the at least one vertically extending member.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the exchanging means further comprises:means for moving the vertically extending member, the horizontally extending member, and the at least one extendible member with respect to one another to remove an installed supporting means from the moving means, store the removed supporting means in an empty storage bay, retrieve a replacement supporting means from a storage bay, and install the replacement supporting means on the moving means.
- 12. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means operably engagable with the at least one overhead rail for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration; locking means for releasibly locking the supporting means with respect to the moving means, the locking means moveable between a released position and a locked position; and means for biasing the locking means toward the locked position.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the exchanging means further comprises drive means for moving the locking means between the released position and the locked position.
- 14. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means operably engagable with the at least one overhead rail for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration; and means for controlling the exchanging means to replace a first supporting means of a first component configuration with a second supporting means of a second component configuration based on a signal corresponding to a next component configuration to be transported along the assembly line.
- 15. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means operably engagable with the at least one overhead rail for moving the supporting means along the assembly line; means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration; and means for locating the supporting means with respect to the moving means, wherein the locating means includes at least one pin disposed on the moving means and each of the plurality of supporting means having a corresponding complementary aperture for receiving of the at least one pin engaged within the aperture of the supporting means.
- 16. A method for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising the steps of:supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line with supporting means; moving the supporting means along the assembly line with moving means; and exchanging the supporting means of one particular component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration with exchanging means, wherein the exchanging step includes the step of engaging at least one slot in the supporting means with at least one handling means to move the supporting means along a vertical axis and two horizontal axes normal to one another.
- 17. An apparatus for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising:means for supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line; means for moving the supporting means along the assembly line, wherein the moving means includes an overhead transport system including a plurality of trolleys for movement along a predetermined path defined by at least one overhead rail extending between a plurality of workstations in a closed loop configuration, at least one carriage for each trolley connected to the overhead rail, the trolley for moving the at least one carriage along the path of travel defined by the rail, at least one downwardly extending pillar from each trolley, a horizontal support member connected to the support pillar for movement between a raised position and a lowered position, and means for locking the horizontal support member to the support pillar when in the raised position; and means for exchanging the supporting means of one component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration.
- 18. A method for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising the steps of:supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line with supporting means suspended from at least one overhead rail defining a path of travel; moving the supporting means along the assembly line with moving means operably engagable with the at least one overhead rail; and exchanging the supporting means of one particular component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration with exchanging means.
- 19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of:locating the supporting means with respect to the moving means.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the locating step further comprises the step of:engaging at least one locating pin mounted on the moving means for releasible locking engagement with an interchangeable component nest of the supporting means to hold the interchangeable component nest in position with respect to the moving means.
- 21. The method of claim 19 wherein the locating step further comprises the step of:inserting at least one pin disposed on the moving means through a corresponding complementary aperture on each of the plurality of supporting means.
- 22. The method of claim 18 wherein the exchanging step further comprises the steps of:disengaging the supporting means from the moving means with at least one handling means; and storing the disengaged supporting means in one of a plurality of storage compartments with the at least one handling means.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein the exchanging step further comprises the steps of:retrieving a first supporting means for a first component configuration from one of the plurality of storage compartments with the at least one handling means; and installing the first supporting means for the first component configuration on the moving means with the at least one handling means.
- 24. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of:controlling the exchanging step with electronic control means in response to a signal corresponding to a component configuration to be transported along the assembly line next.
- 25. The method of claim 18 wherein the exchanging step is performed while the assembly line is operating.
- 26. The method of claim 18 wherein the supporting step further comprises the step of supporting an individual component with one of a plurality of antler nests, each antler nest individually engagable with the moving means, at least one antler nest corresponding to each different component configuration to be transported along the assembly line.
- 27. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of:locking the supporting means with respect to the moving means.
- 28. An apparatus for transporting a selectable one of a plurality of different components along a single assembly line comprising:a plurality of antler nests corresponding to a plurality of groups of antler nests, each group of antler nests for supporting different component configurations for movement along the single assembly line; at least one carriage suspended from at least one overhead rail for supporting each antler nest for movement along the assembly line, the carriage having at least one locating member engagable with each antler nest to accurately locate and lock each antler nest on the corresponding carriage; and means for exchanging one antler nest with another antler nest connectible with respect to the corresponding carriage at an exchange workstation located on the assembly line.
- 29. A method for selectively transporting one of a plurality of different component configurations along an assembly line comprising the steps of:supporting at least one particular component configuration individually during transport along the assembly line with supporting means; moving the supporting means along the assembly line with moving means; and exchanging the supporting means of one particular component configuration with the supporting means for another component configuration with exchanging means, wherein the exchanging step includes the steps of moving at least one vertically extending member horizontally along a path adjacent a portion of the assembly line, moving at least one horizontally extending member vertically along the at least one vertically extending member between first and second vertical end limits of travel, and moving at least one extendible member supported from the horizontally extending member between a retracted position and a first extended into operable engagement with the supporting means carried by the moving means along the assembly, the at least one extendible member for lifting the supporting means out of engagement with respect to the moving means when in the first extended position.
- 30. The method of claim 29 wherein the exchanging step further comprises the step of:moving the at least one extendible member to a second extended position opposite from the first extended position with respect to the retracted position, the at least one extendible member for manipulating the supporting means into and out of engagement with a storage compartment spaced from the portion of the assembly line accessible along the path of the at least one vertically extending member.
- 31. The method of claim 29 wherein the exchanging step further comprises the step of:moving the vertically extending member, the horizontally extending member, and the at least one extendible member with respect to one another to remove an installed supporting means from the moving means, store the removed supporting means in an empty storage bay, retrieve a replacement supporting means from a storage bay, and install the replacement supporting means on the moving means.
- 32. In an overhead transfer system extending through a workstation having at least one overhead rail for conveying a moveable trolley along a fixed path of travel, and a carriage suspended from the trolley for vertical movement when located at the workstation, the improvement comprising:a workpiece-supporting nest connectible to the carriage for supporting a component to be processed for movement along the fixed path of travel; and means for releasibly connecting the nest to the carriage, wherein the connecting means includes locking means for releasibly locking the nest with respect to the carriage, the locking means moveable between a released position and a locked position, and means for biasing the locking means toward the locked position.
- 33. The improvement of claim 32 further comprising:a lift and carry exchanger for operably engaging a first nest associated with a carriage located at the workstation, and for disconnecting the first nest from the carriage.
- 34. The improvement of claim 33 further comprising:the lift and carry exchanger movable horizontally and vertically for storing the first nest in a storage location.
- 35. The improvement of claim 33 further comprising:the lift and carry exchanger movable horizontally and vertically for retrieving a second nest from a storage location, and for connecting the second nest with respect to the carriage located at the workstation.
